@@NoahKellman yeah I do. I often get people discouraging me from thinking modes when improvising instead telling me about arppegios and pentatonic scales and really emphasising the target notes, do you think that's a good way of approaching soloing, particularly in a Neo Soul / Jazz context?

Your presentation is informative but humble. I like "I'm here to show you all I KNOW" - a subtle but huge difference from the "everything you need to know" promised by some of these other hyped-up know-it-alls. Acknowledging that the music we love is too much for any single mind to fully grasp and that we are all students. Good job Noah!

Thanks I appreciate the kind words. To be honest, I've probably said everything you need to know before (and I would imagine that most of those who do mean well) but I agree that it's important to be humble and respectful of this music. Like everyone, I have certain strengths and weaknesses and without a doubt, gaps in my knowledge, so I'm always open to learning more and excited for learning from others as well. I certainly do my best to let you all know when there's something I'm unsure of as well. Thanks for your comment and for watching my videos, I appreciate it.

Complete beginner here. I figured that, if I was going to have a hard time learning the piano, I might as well doing it while listening to something good. I like your sound (and the simple explanations). Watched a thousand neo soul videos before I landed on this one. And also, thanks for the added color keyboard on top. It makes it easier for newbies to follow.

I don't think I can post a link here, but I found a great interview of Robert Glasper that people might like. Search for "Robert Glasper Interview by Greg Thomas - 2/20/2016 - Clinton, NY". Toward the end around 40 minutes into it he talks about the history of neo-soul in Brooklyn in the late 90s. He was hanging around with Erikah Badu, Common and his good friend Bilal then. I love that guy, and his music, so much.

I have a question: I'm aware that you've done a how to play like Oscar Peterson which by the way was REALLY in-depth and amazing to watch! But I was wondering if you could do a video explaining Oscar Peterson's c jam blues night train solo. I have managed to figure out that there is a sequence of 12 bar blues then 4 bar break then 12 bar blues and so on but I would really appreciate a breakdown of his techniques! Thanks

Hello Noah. I’ve been following you for a long time, and I’ve bought several music packages from you. Always providing great and fresh ideas on music, jazz and neosoul. Thanks for sharing. One question/doubt from my humble point of view. On progression 5, of course I have steal it for my repertoire, the chord Ab F B E sounds spectacular, but youre naming it Abdim. For me its a kind of Fdim /Ab. What I’m doing at playing is adding after your chord the Ab F B D, with one finger movement, the real Abdim. Thanks for your feedbak. Carlos
@NoahKellman
@NoahKellman 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Carlos, thanks for the comment and the support! Good question. If you think about F and Ab diminished 7 chords, they actually share the same exact notes (F, Ab, B and D). I could see the argument for tons of specificity to actually call it Fdim(maj7) / Ab, for example, which would include the E in there! But for me, I feel the overall sound/tonality of the chord is Ab diminished because it shares so much with F anyway. So, maybe that's not a perfect theoretical answer, but that's how I think of it anyway! Perhaps a theoretician can weigh in here too if they see this conversation. For me though, calling it Abº7 makes sense, even though I'm playing an E instead of D. Does that all make sense?
@voytecgrobor7576
@voytecgrobor7576 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Carlos, when I was young, I was cofused with this kind of voicing (and the naming). But the I figured out simple rule. Dim chord = whole tone/ half tone scale. So E is an extension of the diminished chord. Play Ab dim7 in left hand, then add G dim7 in the right. Hope it helps. Brazilian guitar players use a lot of this (like Ab F B E, from the bottom). They call it Adim7 b13

I’m wondering if you or someone here can tell me the key signature of each example. The first two seemed to work well in C min, but not sure if that’s correct or what key the others are. Thanks so much for publishing this, I absolutely love this style of music with the rich chords. I’m a drummer by the way so please excuse the beginner questions.

Hi again Noah. I’m still working/enjoying your progressions. I have a doubt, probably because of my musical unknoledge, that arise to me when I’m playing arpeggios, just like in those barron voicings family in your third prog. Without using the pedal, I always have the doubt in my left hand of releasing the keys after playing, or holding them . I like both sounds. I would like to know your opinion. Thanks again and sorry for this 3rd degree.
