The important thing is make it fun, not a chore and explain everything and why it's happening, every step of the way. For example show the big chair and let the child climb into it themself (help if they're struggling, but let them try) and explain what the cape is for, something like "this is to keep all the hair off, otherwise your clothes would get very messy and itchy, we don't want that!" And the actual process of the haircut, first show the scissors and the machine and the process of cutting the hair, for the first few times until they get used to it. It quells any fear that it will hurt or anything. A way to relate everything to what they know is to, for example, with the water spray say 'look it's just like the rain'. You could also make both of your appointments at the same time and go first, so they can see what it is like

We found the secret is to not push him, and make it sound like an adventure. Noah doesn't mind haircuts but for a few months just didn't want to go. This was the first stop on an "Adventure Day" with Daddy.
