Edward Said Memorial Lecture - A History
Edward Wadie Said was a Palestinian-American literary theorist and one of the most articulate and visible advocates of the Palestinian cause. He taught English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. Before his death in 2003, Professor Said was seen as one of the leading literary critics of the 20th century, and described by many as an 'Intellectual Superstar' in the United States.

@triplecheck4 If he is conjuring these things out of thin air he is the most convincing spontaneous literary genius i have ever seen. He puts dickens, shakespeare and proust to utter shame. whats more what is being said at the heart of this video really cannot be contested. The U.S. aswell to diffrent extents the countries which it is in bed with including israel treat the populations of countries they are adverse to as non people, the muslim world most prominently.

He is also saying if the untied states(and now europe) simply stopped acquiescing to this peace would come to the area much easier than people might think.

It never ceases to fascinate me that people such as Rachel Neuwirth actually think they possess the ability to credibly take on someone with the brilliance and breadth of knowledge that Chomsky has. Such people would last about twelve seconds in a debate with him before running away with their metaphorical tails between their legs, if such persons had the courage, intellect or knowledge to take him on in the first place.

@triplecheck4 Um Israel wasn't proclaimed an independant state...from palestine oddly enough..until 1948. The land that was annexed for them...has not only historical ties to judaism but christianty and Islam as well. Dr. Chomsky in this talk is not calling this act into to question. Though it could be. What he is saying is that the reason there is no peace in the area now is not because palestine wants to encroach on land that currently belongs to israel but .....

@KingMinosxxvi Israel indeed predated the 1922 Palestine Mandate doc. First as I said, it had two common wealth previously, then the concept to reestablish Israel began in the late 19th Century but it was always the prayers of Jews around the world since the Roman dispersed most of them from the land of Israel in 70 C.E. The League of Nation voted in 1922 to reestablish the Jewish homeland in Palestine because they recognized the historical connection of the Jews to this land.

@triplecheck4 Maybe ive missed something but as far as i can tell Dr. Chomsky has not said anything about how the average arab is treated within israel. If you can refute what is said at 52"11 about borgouning settlements being illegal...you might have a point..but chomsky is talking about the way the pollictical situation is handled by the west and the fact that no palestinian state is being alowed to exist. Those who support or defend that state are "non-people"

@triplecheck4 Chomskys work is from declassified papers of governments, memoirs of politicians, public statements by politicians, scientific studies, human rights reports, document leaks, ad nauseum, and all his books are fully referenced. I have checked many facts myself. What are your views based on? Media propaganda? Your pay cheque?

@triplecheck4 It's "Jewish Land". I wasn't aware that Jewish refered to a nationality. I guess i was wrong.tellingly so. Lets say Chomsky had a bizzare stroke in i dont know 1982 and all the pollitical and media based investagation he has done are the product of a brilliant mind gone of the rails. which of course is not the case. he is still one of the 2 or 3 most important linguists who has ever lived.(I.E. not a quisling) P.S. last time i check Israel NOT a country in 1922

@triplecheck4 On the fact that isreal didnt exist 1922 I was refering to your comment to check "the 1922 Palestine Mandate" since it seems that mandate well predates even the conception Israel. Alas the united states did exist 100 years before world war 1. even a quisling like me knows the declaration of In..was signed in 1776. Chomsky seems pretty confident, infact i have never seen him fumble for a date or an answer.

I feel that this issue would be made more seductive if it expressed through humorous anecdotes and sarcasm. Especially if the Israeli government is the one who is sarcastically dealt with. The Cartoonist can have fine way to make us governments to people laugh in splits at their decisions.

@KingMinosxxvi Chomsky, the Orwellian par excellence, may be a linguists but he is not an historian. And for him as a Jew and as an American to vilify Israel and America in the way he does is clearly a quisling! Many countries were not in existence after W.W.I including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, Lebanon, Pakistan etc. But Israel today has her third commonwealth in this land because it was recognized so. And America didn't even exist just 100 years before WWI.

Advise: Study History, so far you got an F! Google, Israel Historical connection to the land of Israel/Palestine. As the League of Nations recognized so in the 1922 Palestine Mandate document in 1922 and first did so in the 1920 San Remo Peace Conference after the fall of the Ottoman Empire in WWI, who ruled the area of Palestine, today Jordan and Israel, for 400 years.
