This was very informative, as usual with Chomsky. I didn't have any idea that Stalin suggested a Re-Unification of Germany under reasonable conditions. I knew about Cuba & Turkey during The Missile-Crisis. These are just two examples of the Soviets being reasonable. There were other Soviet Leaders with similar relaxation proposals. Each time the United States' Foreign-Policy-Makers claimed the Soviets were "bluffing". They never even bothered to "call" the bluff because it was never about National Security, as Chomsky pointed out. It was about Empire and crushing or weakening a powerful International Competitor :: an Economic / Military / Political Competitor. If the United States had agreed they would have faced International embarrassment if _they_ had double-crossed the Soviets and consequently, The World !

In one of Noam Chomskys more recent webinars he talks about the extinction of mankind. At the moment, we live on a planet that is part of a galaxy called the milky way. Scientists, through observing Andromedas movements over a period of time, have predicted through many calculations that our two galaxies will collide in some 2.5 billion years. If mankind cannot find a way of escaping our galaxy before the predicted collision, then yes, all life on our planet is certainly doomed to extinction. The logistics of travelling across our own galaxy presents its own set of problems without even thinking about travelling to a galaxy beyond Andromeda. So, if it turns out that space travel is not possible and we really are going to be stuck here, we may as well settle down and make the most of what we have in whatever time we have left.
@JustinLHopkins
@JustinLHopkins 2 жыл бұрын
It’s highly unlikely that mankind will be here for the andromeda collision. Even so, most scientists estimate that since stars are so vastly spread apart and space is mostly empty that nothing will actually collide.

Chomsky talks about real history and leaves a lot of details out. Such as the MESSAGES that Khrushchev sent to Kennedy, not message. McNamara talks about this in the Fog of War. The hard message said "On that critical Saturday, October 27th, we had two Khrushchev messages in front of us. One had come in Friday night, and it had been dictated by a man who was either drunk or under tremendous stress. Basically, he said, "If you'll guarantee you won't invade Cuba, we'll take the missiles out." Then before we could respond, we had a second message that had been dictated by a bunch of hard-liners. And it said, in effect, "If you attack, we're prepared to confront you with masses of military power."

It's obvious that the Anglo-American Euroatlanticist contingent have always interpreted any sign of "enemy" cooperation and conciliation as signs of weakness and impotence. Further, they've examined all offers and proposals by the latter 'diagnostically': whatever the 'enemies' propose to control, reduce, eliminate is precisely that which ought not be, nay which must be expanded and enlarged. There's cynical realist logic to their stance, sadly.
