There are costs and there are priorities, and Ukraine has decided, along with the West, to deny Russia their plunder. I believe the right thing is being done, in fact if NATO wants to join the fight it would be over sooner. The only winners in any war are those who remain alive and in reasonable health at the end. The losers are the thousands or millions whose lives are lost or otherwise destroyed due injury, displacement, destruction of homes, means of earning a living and just the sheer trauma of war and it's effects on people. My parents both went through the second world war. Both were very deaf in old age; my mother perhaps from the bombing of her hometown...my father perhaps from being transported around the world in noisy ships/perhaps sometimes being close to artillery too( he was in Royal Signals, so didn't actually participate in the fighting, but was at times fairly close to front lines.). My father informed me that disease (through living in unsanitary conditions, unfamiliar tropical diseases..much dysentery) killed as many as those lost on the battlefield. This is the human cost of gaining a temporary economic advantage of resources/territory. Meantime, humans are ultimately destrying their own ecological niche and heading for self-extinction.

Noam doesn't even consider the fact that Ukrainians themselves don't want Russia's leader to rule them politically. Ukrainians support the war against the invasion, and ask for help from Western countries to fight the invasion to retain the sovereignty of their borders. Ukrainians are brave. I'm not so sure the same is the case for people that push for peace at any cost. The big contradiction of peace at any cost, which Noam seems to advocate, is that making peace at any cost doesn't produce peace at all. It was tried by Chamberlain before WWII, but Germany just kept advancing and taking more. If Russia takes over any other sovereign nation by force the inhabitants won't find peace but oppression. Thousands are volunteering for the military, even poor people are donating money for drones and cars for the army. There are countries that chose to vilify NATO as the aggressor and a tool of American hegemony. This view is in total disregard for the many years that Russia has threatened Eastern Europe. That is, it was well-known that hundreds of thousands died. But it's Putin who brought the issue forward so many times, twice a week for all of 2022, and every 2-3 weeks in 2023, who have caused the discussion on the possibility of a nuclear war, by threatening to use nukes against us and against Ukraine! It is absolutely incredible and the summom of hypocrisy of Chomsky, to dare give the blame to USA on that matter, and criticise Americans for even bringing the issue to a debate, AND to not even mention the fact that this same week, Russia has moved its nuclear launchers and nuclear missiles to Belarus borders with Ukraine, a few miles from Poland! But oh no, not a word about it, heaven forbid, we dont criticize Russia nor even bring the matter a quart under the table. Oh no, it remain hidden under the proverbial hypocrisy carpet! One could think that Chomsky was not living in the United States, but in cheylabinsk, or Moscow, in the 70'es, and was talking a coded language, dear to russians who have since long learned the crying game to never tell the truth, but hide it all into the invisible corners, where everything can subsequently be defensively denied. But that will still be doing him a service to believe that. Why he don't mention that it is Russia who caused the conflict and China who caused the conflict by using military force in Ukraine and threatening Taiwan?? Is he blind to whats going on? Or did he have a blind window on all Chinese and russian expansionist agression? They are the cause of the problem to which we are responding. He never mention the rights and freedom of choice of the Ukrainian and Taiwanese, nor the fact that those countries are dictatorships nor that China is colonising more and more countries. Russia ressources are now in the hands of China. He don't mention either the military forces of those countries nor see that its very bad for all people that totalitarian regime dominate. The reason why USA needs a strong army, is because most of the countries in the world are not democratic, meaning most people are not free. He doesn't mention too that mexico is a narco mafia state like most latin American countries, where corruption and gang crimes are so high that the country cant function and the population cannot live there and migrate massively to the united states and Canada. If we close our doors to migrants from middle East, Africa and Latin America, those countries will implodes in civil wars. Without our help, african populations will rapidly decline as those governments are unable to function normally and dont produce sufficient food nor medical care to their citizens. And neither Russia nor China are willing to help them. The difference between them and us, is that we use our wealth to help others, while they keep it all for themselves to luxury and to their army. Who gave all the know how to Russia and China so that they could develop? We did, for the past 150 years. He spoke of the African countries suffering because of is??? What about the slavery by arabs and colonisation of africa and india by arabs? And the colonisation and use of slaves by the ottomans and Mongols?? For 1200 years. And african using other africans as slaves. Much worse crimes have been committed in africa by africans since the end of colonisation in the 50'es and 1960, for 63 to 70 years ago. The countries were left with a functioning system, agriculture and schools and hospitals, and all was destroyed and not replaced. And now its chaos and misery and dictatorships and colonisation by China who use africans as slaves to go in the mines and take care of their children and cook and clean for them. He is blind to the new reality and live in a romantisation of a past vision of the world who was already biased by Chinese and Sovjet propaganda and try to hang on it until the end. Despite everything shouting at him that he is wrong. China was never communist Chomsky, nor was Russia nor Sovjet ever communist countries, but were always totalitarian repressive regime with imperialistic ambitions, that Russia proved early on by invading all those European countries, abusing of the situation they had been put into by the collaboration of Russia with Hitler, giving nazi Germany all the ressources it needed to build canons and tanks and bombs and prepare its stocks to start a world war. Russia first switched against Hitler, after Germany begun to invade Russia. China and Russia are not communist but fachist countries with a very fascist controlling regime, dreaming to expand and take all the world, of more power and more profit. What always strikes me as so hypocritical about Noam’s analysis is when he talks about economic development. Noam is ostensibly an anarcho-syndicalist, a communist, but he is talking in positive terms of the Chinese, Saudi, and other countries developing their capitalist economic systems. It just strikes me as an anti-America take more than anything grounded in real economic analysis. If the US was doing what China was doing by building a global economic capitalist network - a U.S. Silk Road - Noam would talk about the US’s use of it for neo-colonialism, economic exploitation, a tool of leverage over the home country, depriving the country’s people of their natural resource wealth, etc. But because China is doing it, Noam talks of the Silk Road like you might hear a free-marketer. I think the internet term for this is concern trolling.
