as devastating as this whole thing is, it brings a smile to my face to hear when people have ideas like buying up the entire haitian rice crop at above-market value, then giving the food to the haitian people. what an efficient way of helping people.

That's a question many people have, 408Magenta. Chomsky is one of a kind, but he's influenced the work of many scholars who are carrying the torch - Robert McChesney on media, Phyllis Bennis on foreign policy, Amy Goodman's peace and justice work, countless activists and organizations, and more. Damiaan makes a good point. Plus, through his legacy of books, and the technology of KZbin, Noam's work will be something to draw from for decades to come.

Whenever someone talks about human rights and real historic facts, opposing to the colonial powers and new world order, paranoid people of US start accusing him to be a communist. Have you ever read some history books at all or just assuming that all you had heard on a main stream media is enough to get the picture? i am so sorry for you.

Haiti gets it's reparations everyday in the form of billions of dollars of aid. If that is not reparations, what is? For starters, he doesn't explain the reason for the US occuptation or the results of it. Haiti was not some paradise ruined by US occuptation--- it had 6 regimes in 5 years, and was on the verge of collapse. 300 marines went to Haiti-- THREE HUNDRED-- and helped stabilize the country. "The occupation greatly improved some of Haiti's infrastructure[3] and centralized power in Port-au-Prince. Infrastructure improvements were particularly impressive: 1700 km of roads were made usable, 189 bridges were built, many irrigation canals were rehabilitated, hospitals, schools, and public buildings were constructed, and drinking water was brought to the main cities. Port-au-Prince became the first Caribbean city to have an available phone service with automatic dialing. Agricultural education was organized with a central school of agriculture and 69 farms in the country.[20]"

Nice copying and pasting my friend. Just because Wikipedia says it doesn't make it true. This was the propaganda that the U.S. used to invade a sovereign country. What if a country invaded us during the great depression to stabilize our country. Stop drinking the kool aid the government wants you to drink.

nomibe2911 don´t even waste your time, hoping that they can hear it. That is why the american establishment is coming after their own people; I am affraid to say, this is just the beginning. I am a Canadian working in Latin America right now and the number of american escaping to the South is tremendous. 5 Countries had to close down their borders cause they can not handle the number of american people looking for a safe place. The USA is the most dangerous place on earth right now. We deal with international students and I refuse to send them to america right now. I feel for the american people cause, while their establishment was bombing and taking over 65 countries the american people were sleeping, now they establishment is coming after them. God help the american people

I suppose the question I have, over seven years after this video was posted, is: Do Haitians get a kick out of watching the United States, the self-proclaimed deliverer of freedom, God's gift to the world, cannibalize itself? How do they feel about how our mythology is being torn down? Do they see how we're turning ourselves inside-out over Russia perhaps manipulating our elections and take some joy in it, knowing how the US and France have manipulated them ever since independence? I'm sure Haitians see the US entirely different from the way Americans see the US, so could you give us a dose of reality? I am fascinated by Ayiti and its revolution and how they took a leadership role in sponsoring similar revolutions in South America; I am equally appalled at how the US and France dealt with their successful revolt and independence, and it's one of those things where, as I learn more about its history, my own views of America go from skeptical to abysmal. Ayiti holds a special place in world history, and instead of constantly trying to remake the country in someone else's image, the international community needs to, for once, step back and let it use aid in their own right. I'm no expert on this, but the country deserves far more than they've been getting, and Americans need to learn what their government did to the second republic of the Western Hemisphere, born from the greatest slave revolt in human history.

But then the people of Iceland, as an example for the world, rose up and put the banksters in jail and rewrote their constitution and restored people power. Today, November 14th, Europeans rose up in large numbers in a strike against imposed austerity. Our corrupt government is making it tough for Haitians and the American People should rise up and seize control of the Evil Empire so the US can be a positive force in the world, for a change, actually promoting freedom, prosperity and justice!

@Th3Wab3 Does Haiti need more agriculture and aquaculture support? Of course, we do. It would be great to decentralize the capital Port-au-Prince and get the peasants back in the country side so that they can work the land or fish. Chomsky is correct, the import tariffs should be higher to allow the Haitian farmers and fishermen to compete. To allow them to export and at the same time feed the country.

0:34:30 Brilliantly observes that when Haiti _exports_ the bounty of its own land at a low price because of "comparative advantages", that's abuse by liberal economists. But then I wonder: how is it also abuse for Haiti to _import_ the bounty of _our_ land? This sounds like a Kafkatrap to me: if we import, that's abuse; if we export, that's abuse; and if we don't do anything, then that's participating in an abusive embargo... and even outright aid is dismissed (0:29:20), because after all that _abuse_ it's less than what we owe them??

Noam...'knows' a lot for the very little time he spent in Haiti. The US is so very interested in Haiti because of the Haitian refugees. The 'gold', the 'oil', and the handful of US rice producers whose exports supplement Haiti's production are not the reason the US has intervened. All the left has done for Haiti is given certain Haitian elites and academics a comfortable lifestyle by repeating the same mind-dulling 'facts' year are year in response to any situation. I wonder where Noam, Wilentz, and Goodman all stay during three days of outrage every 6 years - most likely in Petionville. Liberia, so much worse off, isn't any radar...and is unfathomably unfashionable to these 'guardians' of justice. Sean (the white man carrying the sack of rice uphill for the camera) Penn, hasn't been spotted in Haiti for while.

The principal point about all this stuff is that the international community (ONU) and other first world countries (FRANCE, CANADA, and in some manner the US), wants the Dominican Republic to carry all the weight to maintain a destroyed and bankrupted nation like haiti and we can't do that in the Dominican Republic. We aren't a wealthy nation like Canada, so the full responsibility fall on the ONU and the wealthy nations that promised the aid of 11 billion dollars, those nations that promised this aid only gave 15 % of the total till the date (since january 2010 after the earthquake)... The haitians themselves should begin to reconstruct their miserable country, Long live to the Dominican Republic!!!!

In the side of Dominican Republic when we were invaded in 1916, the population was disarmed, but Dominican people were fearless. They fought with white weapons, knifes, stones and machetes. Many thousands of civilians were killed defending their freedom against the Yankee Invasion. Dominicans have this moto: "Quisquella (meaning the native name of the country) will be free from all foreign imperialism dominion or the Island sinks!"

***** I wasn't born yet, but history tells that American called Dominicans "tigres." At that time, people were used to constants small revolutions and fights. Governments were very unstable. The implementation of a stable police came with Trujillo, after 1930s. Even after the invasion of US in 1965, Dominicans were still brave. At this time, the interest of United State was to stop the spread of Communist ideas in the Caribbean.

***** like @PwnStar said Haitians took longer to get their freedom back. They did not make it until 1935. But yes, the Americans kept the domination in both sides of the island with economical pressure. Dominican Republic was able to do better because Trujillo understood the game of international politics at the time. He attacked the Haitians and closed the frontier at the time that he racial cleansed the country by importing white immigrants and eliminating Haitians. About 40,000 Haitians were killed in the border. The Haitian president received indenization for the losses. It was terrible! He lived in the most racists times in the US, and he understood there was no other way. If Trujillo wouldn't do that; even Haity would had suffer more. Dominican Republic has been a released to Haiti even when Haiti wants to deny it.

gmanon No The Haitians attained their freedom in 1791. What kept them back was the lack of understanding of international law and politics this is where DR was better at. What does that have to do with courage/cowardice like pwnstar suggested? Also Haiti has been targeted by the white supremacists much more then DR Just a few days ago news broke about the U.N troops poisoning the water suppy

i find it interesting that NGOs never set up agricultural institutions... malnutrition and hunger appear rampant and the solution would be to restore agriculture...

Chomsky is great but he does my head in sometimes. Someone asks him to talk about the UN's role in the world at about 30:55 but Chomsky starts a lecture about US economic history...

🤔Haiti also invaded and occupied the Dominican Republic for 22 years, killibg many Dominicans (check the massacre in the church) and trying to abolish the spanish language and Dominican culture, DR people were also forced to pay such " Haitian independence", even if they wont admit it, DR has always been their helping hand, however they choose to show no respect to DR and insult DR internationally. Haiti is in bad shape through some fault of their own, as at one point in the 1950's the two countries were on the same plane field but corruption of the tribal Haitian government did not let Haiti flourish! To this day Dominican Republic has the 2nd largest Haitian population which it helps providing free hospitals and schools, but you will hear only negative things about DR, but if you keep an open mind and investigate deeper you will see the truth, many Dominican people wish the best for Haiti and also believe it should not be meddled in by any foreing power! The thruth needs to be told so that some Dominicans dont feel resentment, because they see how ungrateful Haiti has been in the international arena.

he's almost all correct except it wasn't actually "the US" or for that matter "whites" who did all of that. It's like he's Very VERY carefully stepping around the outside of the federal reserve, Trilateral commission, CFR, and Illuminist connections at all. He HAS to know about them as well as the OBVIOUS Cultural Marxist, Frankfurt School, and even Sabbatean ideological and institutional connections but he's completely avoiding any mention at all of any threads that might suggest that vast conspiracy might even exist. Which begs the question, if it doesn't actually exist, why avoid talking about those key players in the wrecking of Haiti and what they were doing elsewhere at the same time as they were doing that to Haiti? Although Haiti is indeed an Island, it is not completely isolated from the political and financial actions going on elsewhere. Obviously.
