Having been to Oslo recently with KIA, Bob Flavin & I had a look at how Norway does electric. From the incentives given, the taxes applied and the cost of owning an EV for business users, we chat about how Norwegians have embraced EVs with 20% of 2022 new car sales being electric.

while i have never been in that part of oslo, i have been at the Frisbee throwing areas. you have a starting location marked, and a small map that shows you your course and your goal (you can see the metal frisbee catcher that marks the goal in the video of the man). then you try to get from start to finish with as few throws as possible. curving the frisbee around trees and trying to throw as perfect as possible. not far away from the finish a new course begins, and after completing several goals you end up where you started. its actually quite enjoyable when you get the hang of it and a great group activity.

Great review as ever, one thing I would like to highlight, I drive for as a public servent around 200km a day, a electric car could work for me in so many ways but the milage rate for diesel is 3 times more than the electric rate. To avail of this reduced milage rate I would have to spend 50k on a new car!! I acknowledge that home electrical charging is cheaper but the initial cost to do the right thing is beyond the honest hard working paye worker and is centred around company cars only, it appears they want the electricity for the data centres.......

Yeah the incentives to stay in a diesel from our government are a little odd. Even to run both types for a while and reduce diesel over time.

I'd love to hear the stories from those who've bought second hand EV. 4yrs old plus and get feedback on battery capacity, range, problems and their trade in experience after car gets to 8/9 yrs old. Would like to see depreciation scale. battery replacement cost in worse case scenario. Is the life on an EV shorter than ICE. We need charging points in estates, town house development etc.. Great video gents 👏

My work colleagues 2016 Nissan leaf will currently do 70 miles on a full charge in winter on the motorway. He lives near work so not a problem for him , plus they have a petrol car in their family for longer journeys.

@@markl4670 my neighbour got rid of Leaf after 3 years due to constant problems and has MG EV now that too has already been in garage a few days due to it not charging. Less than 2yrs old.

We are a two EV Family for over two years, with both cars doing over 20K per year. Never had any 'range anxiety' as yet. Though a bit easier taking our Model 3 on the longer trips. Ireland is a perfect shape and size, a little planning of fast hubs (Not single point of failure as many are presently) particularly at the country extremities and main routes. Doesn't actually require massive investment and we could be as good as Norway. Also our VAT and VRT make family sized EVs very expensive compared to other European countries. The grant is a big help for the lower priced models, but the cars are almost impossible to get.

Nice chat, gents! I’m curious: what’s the kWh cost at your homes in cloudy, green Ireland (same climate as us!)? We pay CAD 9.5cents in BC, Canada (hydro power energy). A fellow on the Big Island of Hawaii mentioned they pay US 40cents/kWh for electricity at their homes. Ps imagine the re-gen going down that ski jump behind you there 🤓

Norway has a cold climate too and that doesn't stop them considering range is reduced in cold weather. I'd say Tesla's scheduled climate controls are a godsend.

The point no one mentions is that if you are driving for a long time with a combustion engine, you need to stop to go to the toilet and grab something to eat anyway, and on top of that you have to fill petrol. The amount of time spent charging is also spent while going to the toilet and eating, not separate actions. It's a factor.

Nowhere near as long a stop though. Ireland isn’t big enough to actually need to stop for food on a journey in my opinion.

Well the Norwegians have a reasonable government at least . We have Eamon Ryan . Not to worry we are about to go into recession again late 2023 all of this will crash and burn.

It's very impressive(minus the lad with nipples to the wind 😁). Norway's oil does make a massive difference though. They've simply got more "free cash" laying around that the government can use. Their public service is a lot less bloated than ours too, so decisions are easier to move through the system. Most of all I would look at their politics. Now poltics everywhere are a mixed bag and Norway is no different, but the Irish have have an annoying and generational habit of insisting on voting in parish pump gombeens and the kids of parish pump gombeens with almost nothing by way of actual alternatives. Look at our issues with housing going back a decade(and before that madness), our issues with our health service going back over a generation, never mind wider infrastructure.. I'd very much include Eamon Ryan in the gombeen class. He does seem to mean well, but good lord... He appeals to sunday supplement reading suburbanites who get anal about what goes into their coloured bins thinking they're "green" while consuming like locusts every time their credit cycles around again. And that includes cars too, EV or ICE. Until we tackle the elephant in the room of ever accelerating consumerism changes like EV's are akin to putting a band aid on a gunshot wound. You're trying to help, it's doing _something_ but...

Totally agree, I drove between Stillorgan an Dundrum yesterday, spotted a lot of large EV's parked in driveways during the day and I wondered if this would save the planet, there are too many of us on the planet and we may need to start eating each other😁

If you compare Dublin County with Oslo "metroplitan area" rather than the municipalities, the populations are not that dissimilar. (Ireland is 84,000 square km; Norway is 326,000, so not THAT similar.) After this was aired, Oslo has decided that ALL public transport (trams, rail, buses) will be all electric by the end of 2023. There are also plans to close parts of central Oslo for private cars. And all new houses MUST have a car charger if there's a car park associated with the house.

Continuing the forward thinking. I bought a new house in 2019 which had wiring for a charger but it’s still not mandatory and very much dependent on the builder.

New regulations from EU will force providers to either support other chargers, or come together and make one single app... There will also be a demand that money are pulled directly from your card, rather than you having to pool up in front.

Nobby, do you think the behaviour of Irish drivers at charge points needs to improve. I see alot of ev cars abandoned where they have finished charging and some ICE using the bays down to laziness. If the government here does invest, is it not just going to compound the non Ev drivers to say, youre taking up our spaces. Youve to do alot of planning if you are going on a long day trip here sadly.

I think the more EVs there are, the worse it will get. Bigger sample size, more idiots. Being allowed sit on a fast charger beyond 80% for example seems a little silly.

A lot of chargers have overstay charges now. But yeah ice parking will be a big problem in the future

@@NobbyOnCars That's odd, the only number that's close to that, is the fleet share (total registrared cars), and that's 23%. The market share of new car sales, has been above 50% for bev's every month, for almost 2 years straight. We have to back to 2014 to find 20% of new car sales.

Norway is one of if not “the” wealthiest countries in the world. Their wealth fund is huge and yes all came from their fossil fuels industry which they tried to sell off to Sweden in the 60s/70s I believe as they were In the doldrums. Sweden turned them down and as a result Norway had to make some serious changes. Also one item to remember is that their electricity generation is also mainly generated by hydro so carbon neutral as well. We have a long way to go and a lot to learn from them as do other countries
