Another great SciShow episode. Thank you for you're consistent quality. This a plead directed at the editing style. I strongly dislike the super tight cuts that remove any pauses for breaths or at the end of sentences and often start just before the previous one ends. First off I would like to commend Olivia Gordon on her insightful lesson on the 2016 Nobel Prize recipient, Yoshinori Ohsumi. I know that I, personally, was looking to find out more about his work and Gordon did a great job introducing his work and uncovering some of the more intense science behind it all. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was earned by Oshumi for his work in cell biology, more specifically autophagy. “During autophagy, a cell transports its broken-down components to a certain area where they’re taken apart, so that their chemical compounds can be reused.” Gordon then goes on to say that Oshumi used this process to backtrack and find out how the science of it all comes together, he identifies the fifteen genes that are crucial for autophagy. I was curious to know what those genes were so I did a little extra research on the topic. I was unable to find the specific genes, but if anyone is able to find them, please respond to me or send me a message containing the information, thank you. On to the next portion of the video, physiology of the teenage brain, was insight to how the teenage brain reacts to rewards, and compares the teenage and adult brain. In the experiment of playing the game it showed just how well teenagers reacted to positive and negative reinforcement. The striatum is the portion of the brain that is known to handle the process of reinforcement, which brings us to the conclusion that when you are a teenager your stream places a larger role in the brain, and lessens when you get older. The teenagers also used the portion of their brain called the hippocampus, which is where the brain handles certain memories. Only the teenagers were able to use the striatum and the hippocampus in combination to help themselves out in reacting. So therefore it is scientifically proven that teens are more likely to learn from their actions when shown positive or negative reinforcement.

I really mean this as a constructive feedback: you guys should really prepare her more for the videos. She should spend some time watching herself going through the script in front of the mirror or after a recording. She used to be monotone, but I guess since the amount of critics she got, she is now trying harder to give her speech a different entonation. The problem is: it got unnatural, like she is trying too hard (A for effort!) Also seems like she doesn't know what to do with her hands or how to gesticulate, hence again why is it so important to watch herself and rehearse more the script. She has gotten better, but she is far off of becoming someone with such good oral prowess as Hank or Michael. It feels like she is an introvert with high levels of anxiety being forced to publicly speak. :( I just feel sorry for her if that is nearly the case. But I guess that if she signed up for the job... she must do it... Maybe theatre classes will help. oh and please, the reflective glasses are so distracting!!

Just a personal theory but maybe the striatum & hippocampus were active in teens bc they use that part of they're brain more. Teens that are school often have to retain more things to recall them later for exams and the like while some jobs may not require that of adults or may not require it as often. This could lead to weakened connections between the striatum and hippocampus so my question: what was the age group of the adult participants in these studies and how long have they been out of a school setting?

Hm... just had an idea concerning piercings after watching Olivia. A lot of people like em, a lot dont, so why not give them practical functions so as to make it more reasonable for everyone. Piercings like that could be used for securing bluetooth headsets and different types of earbuds better for people that are working out, people in construction and other physical labour etc. As for the nose ring I am not quite that clear on what you could use it for to be honest, diabetics and people with health problems might attatch a small sensor that measures their outbreath for different chemicals, thus allowing for health monitors connected to a smart phone. You could have a screw on point for odorizers for people working in or around sewers, nursing homes and the likes where you run across bad odours. I am wondering if you couldn't even make a reasonably small microphone to hang from a nose ring, thus allowing for minimal bumping and that kind of intererence while having it close enough to the mouth to allow for a much weaker receiver than norma, granted you'd need a wind shield for the backside. I donno, makes sense to me if people would find a use for the damn things, maybe it's just me though.

@quetzalthegamer8 жыл бұрын
Makes it easier for professionals to communicate. And it's more efficient to boil down a complicated idea/process down to a word or phrase.
@notadev15908 жыл бұрын
We also like to pay tribute when naming things. In some cases that's a matter of using a foreign word or someone's name as a basis for our word. The ancient Greeks were pioneers in science and medicine.
@quetzalthegamer8 жыл бұрын
***** Not a "form" of Greek, necessarily, but partially composed of Greek. Greek, Latin, French, and (Anglo-Saxon) Germanic are the main languages English is derived from.
@edi98928 жыл бұрын
1) For science new words need to be developed 2) and using ancient Greek or Latin, no modern language gets a special treatment. 3) They were the pioneers, thus it's more an expansion than something completely artificial 4) you can see it also as a tribute to the geniuses of the days of yore.
