When I was 15 and had just started collecting I paid $2 for a box of old records at a yard sale. I was so new to vinyl that it took me a couple of years to realize that the funky-looking album with the banana on it was actually an original mono, east coast pressing LP from The Velvet Underground & Nico (V-5008) with the Emerson "torso" back cover.

What I like is the fact that by doing what you do, you are giving new life to these records, rather than having them sitting, maybe unwanted in someone's closet or garage.. Besides finding the ultracool rarities, you are getting these vintage, enjoyable items of music history back out into circulation, for yourself and other enthusiasts to appreciate..

That Zep Rubber Dubber is a great find. Not only is it a very cool Zep piece, but it's an excellent relic of the era, the industry and history of music copyright law. When Rubber Dubber and TMoQ were at their best, there was some good stuff being released. If you haven't read it already, get the book "Bootleg - The Secret History of the Other Recording Industry" by Clinton Heylin . It's a fascinating read with lots of history. Rubber Dubber was the son of a Dallas in the business of organized crime. Not interested in continuing in the family's line of business, he ventured out on his own. His unique niche was that he owned his own pressing plant and many of his better recordings were made my smuggling in wireless microphones with tiny FM units that sent the signal to a van parked nearby the venue where the tape machine was rolling. I've always thought this story would make a good movie.

I just went to an estate sale because they had some vintage science fiction books I was interested in. No mention of records in the sale description but I notice some piled in the floor of the hallway linen closet. Most were typical dollar bin finds, but I randomly found Hank Mobley’s Dippin’ and a Bill Evans record as well, both in pristine condition. Was a good day🤘🏼. I felt super fortunate to be in the right place at the right time.

I’m new to vinyl. About 2 months ago I went to my first garage sale looking for albums. I was digging thru piles of nasty, moldy late ‘70’s, 80’s and 80’s Hair Bands. There was some decent stuff in there, but everything was in terrible shape. The very last album I flipped to was Aretha “I Never Loved A Man...”. I thought, “wow, this is out of place”. The cover was not that bad, just a split seam. I pulled the record out to look at and I thought, “This can’t be right”. 25 cents later and she was in the car with me. Got it home and on my table, and Oh Man! It’s pristine! I don’t know how records are graded, but this has to be Near Mint to Mint. I don’t know if this is a fairly common album to find (again, new to this) but when it’s your first one...!

With Sabbath Vol 4 the rare U.K. pressing is the slightly later spaceship label. That’s the one that is hard to find. Also with the self titled debut the very first pressings mention something about Philips at the bottom of the label, think it says “A Philips Product” or something like that as Vertigo was originally a sub label of Philips.

Pretty crazy finds man. To be honest with you in 15 years of collecting (and even having worked at a record store 8 years ago) I've never given much thought to hitting up yard/garage sales. That said I have scored some majorly undervalued stuff at stores though. The only time I really scored outside a store was guy who had asked me to look through and kinda appraise his collection. When I was done I noticed he had a British mono copy of Beggars Banquet and a US original of LZ I both in NM shape. He didn't think much of 'em but I didn't really wanna rip the guy off so I gave him $50 for about $400 worth of records. He thought mono presses were worthless and that I was insane to even offer $50 so everyone left happy ha ha. Also, when I did work at a record store I passed up an original of Odyssey an Oracle for $20 because I didn't know what it was. Have regretted that day ever since loll... But for $4?? Man that's a sick find! I'm from Texas, but it sounds like I need to make a trip over to Charlotte!

It was the last house on a block of sales and they said nobody wanted them and I could have them all for $3. I saw Dean Martin and Mantovanni records and thought junk, but when I got home and dug through the records out pops Please, Please, Please....with the BANNED cover! And this puppy is in MINT condition both record and jacket! The people who bought it probably had no idea who James Brown was, played it once and put it away. It didn't fit in with the rest of the records I figured pro-rated, I payed about .08 cents for it. Any idea how much it's worth today?
