Nobody expected 'very left-wing' Michael Moore to issue a film 'critical of renewables'

Michael Moore's new film 'The Planet of the Humans' marks the beginning of a "grand awakening" to the impacts of renewables on the natural environment says Environmental Progress founder Michael Shellenberger.
Mr Moore has garnered fame and accolades for his documentaries over the last two decades, and has himself been an activist for broadly left issues including environmental protectionism.
In his new film he exposes the renewable energy sector as not being entirely green or clean as well as criticising large corporations for virtue signalling on this issue.
Mr Shellenberger said Moore is a "very left-wing person who people did not expect to issue a movie that was so critical of renewables".
He told Sky News host Chris Kenny, the problem with renewable energy is its fuel is "very energy dilute, you have to spread a huge amount of energy collectors," be it solar panels or wind turbines, over a huge area, "so the land requirements are absolutely enormous".
Many people have politicised the issue of energy and environmentalism, but Mr Shellenberger said the problems with renewables exist "whether you have a capitalist society or a socialist society".
"They have to do with the inherent physical nature of renewable energy … the better energy sources have more energy, they're higher energy density that means you use less of the natural environment".
"It's impossible to just dismiss the people who are raising these concerns anymore as climate deniers or as right-wingers".

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava said she will protect communities hardest hit by rising sea levels, which eat away at beaches and leave residents particularly vulnerable to flooding during hurricane season .Miami is to invest billions of dollars to tackle its vulnerability to rising sea levels, a reality that already affects the daily lives of residents used to constant flooding. The city of Miami Beach-which is part of Miami-Dade County-invested millions of dollars in raising the level of many of its streets in 2016. The problem is so visible that, during the summer rainy season, it is common to see Miamians kayaking along flooded avenues and cars sunk up to their windows. www.miaminewtimes.com/news/climate-change-study-says-sea-level-rise-could-cost-miami-dade-32-billion-for-seawall-construction-11201008

@@praisegod8635 the documentary. I'll give you an example. At one point they say that X amount of coal is used to make solar panels. And completely gloss over the fact that that coal will only produce power once for a very short time in a coal fire plant but in solar it will produce energy for the next 50 years. They show all these wind farms with poorly maintained, rusted turbines. Ignoring the fact that in Europe and Japan they are pristine highly maintained machines. The reason why the USAs turbines are so shit is cause didn't do the proper research. They were sold the fantasy that you can just build them and leave them running without maintaining them. Their blades (I work in blades) were falling to bits before someone told them, "oh by the way blades need maintaining as well". There is so much work in the USA for us Europeans to fix those blades because the USA never maintained them, and they don't have nearly enough skilled techs to fix it all... A modern wind turbine uses almost a million pounds of steel but they also repay all their embodied energy in under 6 months and operate for 20 to 35 years. The movie was critical of renewable energy, yes, but even more so the lengths we're going to keep the industrial civilization going,which is destroying the planet. We can't just switch one form of energy with another and keep industrialization going and think we'll live in some green utopia with that switch. We literally need to start changing our way of life to avoid rending this planet uninhabitable.

It's more than just land usage, The best panels only have a 30% efficiency, only when placed in prime locations, and when free from any damage or shade. Even scratches on the panel from sand or dust can reduce efficiency significantly. A small amount of shade can affect a large portion of the panel because they are usually wired in series meaning that the shaded cells also reduces the energy you get from surrounding cells in the panel. The series wiring is required to avoid damaging the inverter used in the panel. On top of that, the energy requirements and the pollution generated when gathering the raw materials including producing the panels, is far worse for the environment than a lot of people realize. Some of the panels can leach chemicals such as lead and cadmium into the soil which can be harmful for agriculture and wildlife. Then when the panels become damaged or worn out to the point that they are no longer functional, they become hazardous waste which cannot be recycled or thrown away. Also energy production does not always match usage, so sometimes the energy is wasted, while at other times, alternative sources need to be used to bridge the gap. This can be remedied in some cases with batteries for some smaller applications, but a large power grid for a city or industrial uses, would require much larger batteries which presents another issue. Lithium ion batteries become much more unstable the larger they are and are more likely to explode the bigger you make them. A battery large enough to store energy for a city or large factories, would basically be a giant ticking time bomb. This goes without even mentioning that current lithium ion batteries use cobalt. Cobalt is a pretty nasty substance with awful side effects to the people who are exposed to it in the mines. Most of the world's cobalt is mined using child slave labor in the Congo, so we can thank child slaves in the Congo that we have e-cigarettes, and cell phones... Things are a lot more complicated than a lot of people bother to research.

The energy density is a major consideration which is why all base load power should be nuclear.
@billleach3396
@billleach3396 4 жыл бұрын
@Jolene In the U.S. that would currently be Nevada and Arizona. Another thing to think about is the amount of waste involved. The volume needed to store the high level waste to produce world's electricity demands if produced using nuclear energy would be a hole about 400 meters by 400 meters by 400 meters. That is a pretty big hole. To deal with the waste from say coal would require a hole (trench) 400 meters wide that goes all the way around the Earth... TWICE. That's 400 meters by 48,000 MILES. Now that is a BIG hole. Even clean burning natural gas produces more waste (and I'm not here calling CO2 waste) than nuclear. BTW both coal, oil, and gas plants emit orders of magnitude more radioactive particles to the environment than does nuclear. Finally, the Experimental Breeder Reactor II (EBR II) in Idaho developed processes to reduce the total amount and the hazards associated with high level radioactive waste. First EBR II produced its own fuel from uranium-238. U-238 is the most abundant nuclide and has the longest half life (6 million years if I'm remembering correctly). What the EBR II folks did was subject the waste to further radiation from the reactor core to force radioactive decay to occur. While America no longer does any research in this area, others around the world are advancing the technology. Such advances would reduce the storage requirements significantly (which is a gross understatement). I could go on but this should be enough for some research and thought.

@NibiruLives You can't detonate a nuclear device without setting off a myriad of alarms the world over (Not just in USA), and hiding the evidence of doing so is even more difficult, the only reason the tsunami did so much damage was because the seawall had been illegally lowered to 5m from the regulation 15m, and the backup diesel generators were in the basement, also against regulations. Had either one of those measure been in place, it would have prevented the meltdowns. Another nuclear facility 80km CLOSER to the earthquake epicentre was up to regulations, and not only remained intact, but served as a shelter for displaced citizens. Besides, we're not looking to install 70s era BWRs, but rather SMRs and/or molten salt analogues that don't need massive amounts of pressurised water.
