Am I the only one who, upon seeing these subterranean units, immediately remembers the horrifying sight of water rushing down stairs into apartments during the rainy season? Another commenter made some great points about snow piling up on the stairs and other below-ground issues, as well. I don't think I'd choose to live below grade anywhere. That said, why I am even watching or commenting at all, I have no idea. Though I have loved my trips to New York, I have no intention of moving away from my secluded 20 acres in the mountains of California. How I have managed to become addicted to this NYC apartment hunting channel is a mystery. I blame Cash. New York doesn’t have a rainy season… it’s also probably not an issue if located on higher ground. There are many parts of NYC which are low lying, often created via landfill, these areas flood. There are also many areas that are on pretty high ground, these don’t generally flood.

The lower level apartments are hideous. In winter, when there are storms, you have to make sure building management cleans those steps so you can get in. The snow drifts would cause leaks around the window. My wife lived in a basement brownstone apartment in the 80s, it was horrid. The first apartment would not get any proper cross ventilation. It would be hot as anything in summer. The grill is absolutely illegal. The sounds bouncing off the masonry of the building walls would take away all privacy downstairs. Your neighbors might not like your music or parties. Also, being on the lower floors in the back you have to worry about people throwing garbage out the window. Since there is less access in the back, you can have issues with neighbors throwing things out the windows. I would not live there at all.

The problem of the washer door has cheap and easy fix, so no stopper at all. You put the washer on a riser especially for washing machines. You’ll have those with a drawer also, to store the detergent and fabric softener. It is a sort of table of 1 foot high. In Europe it’ll cost about €60 (€70 with a drawer), which is about $65 and $75. In that case the door will turn above the toilet seat, it won’t bump into it. And your washing machine is more easily reachable, you won’t have to kneel all the way to the floor. Or in this case sit in an uncomfortable position on the toilet. And a front loading dryer (stacked on top of a washer) is still accessible for normal sized persons.

For an extra $20 bucks on rent, when you power up the laundry the toilet slides back far enough to allow the door to fully open 😂

I live in 186sq ft in a tiny house on wheels. There is plenty of room. But my shower and washer dryer is outside. I live in an Ancient Redwood Forest in the mountains. I love my country life.

I can't believe people want to live this way and are willing and or able to pay this much to do so.

Hmm, I ordered new glasses frames today and I chose yellow. I love them they’re fabulous and now I realize, maybe it’s because you always use yellow? And the cover of the book I’m reading right now that’s exclnt, is yellow. Who knows what influences us? PS if I were living in New York again I would definitely contact you. Los Angeles needs a rental realtor like you, Cash.

We don't have a washer/dryer or dishwasher but I suddenly feel pretty good about living in a 2 bedroom house on plenty of land, with a garden, fire pit, just steps from the ocean with a terrific view and it's $450. a month.

YIKES !!! I thought Boston was overpriced. Hell No to New York apartments.

The apartment where the toilet meets the washer door --- is interesting. They should remove the toilet - and renters could pee and defecate in the washer - which would give more space for a folding table to hold ur personal items. Scary and very expensive apartments.

Cash and Coffee ☕☕ how was the basement apartment better. Creepy under the stairs and winter snow?
@georgiasmith642 жыл бұрын
The second apartment is better because I've never been keen on a basement apartment.... to easy to have someone break into. The third apartment would be okay when they fix the laundry situation in the bathroom.

When will they actually finish renovating the FIB? The scaffolding has been on the building since at least 2019 or 2020.

Boom! found you after someone recommended you when I commented on a video on the Erik Conover channel. I said how nice it would be to view a realistic apartment and to include some of the surrounding area. And bingo you are exactly what I was looking for!! Eric's property tours are getting more and more expensive and I find them boring now. Like museum's. Plus he never looks at the local areas.

The electrical outlet near the outside BBQ patio door can be used for your vacuum when you need to vacuum?

Basement apartments in New York brownstones were designed as servants' entrances and contained the bowels of the building: furnace, working kitchen, laundry garbage collection and a small bedroom or two for the live in staff. It wasn't designed for convenience or beauty. They flood in the spring and snow is a major problem in the winter. There isn't much to be done to improve them for modern use. No thanks.
