We had a big dilemma and had to leave DR so we needed to make some tough choices. Life is never as expected when you choose to sail.

OUTREMER 52 OWNER’S REVIEW: www.katamarans....
🎶 MUSIC by Epidemic Sound
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello! We are Holly and Stephane 🇺🇸🇫🇷
We have made the transition from full-time software professionals from the SF Bay Area to liveaboard sailing explorers who always keep one eye on the weather and our hearts in a song. Our goal is to complete a circumnavigation and we recently transitioned to a performance catamaran and are madly in love with our Outremer 52. We are working with Outremer in France (with the help of Google translate) to launch our boat project and start our journey as sailing vagabonds. While it’s not a race or speedtest, we are doing our first Bluewater crossing this year and we are excited to see AWEN stretch her legs and dance on the water. Join us as we share what we’re learning living without Amazon, (but with Starlink), and attempt this new life of travel and adventure on the ocean. Please be patient with us as we continue to improve our KZbin vlogging skills. Our goal isn’t to make our life a movie, it’s to give back to what others have shared with us, which is why we don’t monetize our channel.

I’m completely addicted to your adventure! There is never a dull moment with you two (and crew). I’m not sure if you’re as calm off camera but you two are great examples of rolling with the punches! Holly your level of relaxed has certainly changed over this experience. You’re both incredibly inspiring.

Someone out there get Holly a cookie😜. Stress is never fun to face. I applaud you for acknowledging when you didn’t react to stress in a positive fashion. You are growing and learning in a very crazy and visible forum. Take a big breath. You responded to stress better than you would have in leg 1. It’s a process. Every day gives us new opportunities to try again.

Glad you made the decision based on all the factors. I never really understood their ultimate authority. They can make a strong suggestion, but if you leave their waters, it should not matter. Ten knots on the front end had to feel good. This entire series has been fantastic.

Their ultimate authority is that it's their country. If you choose to visit then you implicitly accept their rules. I am not saying the rules are right - but I don't agree with many rules/laws in nations such as the US, for example, but when I visit I am very much subject to their rules.

It’s down to poor planning really, if it’s well known that they close due to weather it should’ve been expected. I don’t agree that it’s a valid reason to prevent boats from leaving, but their rules are their rules.

They stamped your exit it should now be your decision to leave with the conditions you feel comfortable with. You have a very capable boat and the skills to deal with the weather and conditions so don’t feel bad.

I believe you made the right choice. No one wants to break “the rules”, but then again there are always exceptions to said rules. You have a boat and crew who are capable of dealing with high seas and weather but knowing this you still left the final decision to visually seeing the conditions. Holly, big hug. I would feel the same as you.

Superb video guys. You captured a difficult situation perfectly. The biggest rule you are of course breaking, is the one that allows deadlines to have too much influence on your risk assessment process. Taking chances will by the law of averages one day catch up with you. However risky, you made the right call to beat the deadline this time, no point in guilt or regrets once you were proved correct…….just don’t do it too often I guess? ❤

You should do a poll, but judging by the comments, everyone agrees that you made the right decision. My thoughts are they were holding you up to try and extract a bribe from you. You got your stamps and are experienced and know what you're getting into. Looks like good sailing ahead! I'm a risk taker so I would have done the same....I probably would have taken the tender out to the chanel the day before to check the conditions and tried to leave the night before..😆 I'm rooting for you to make the slot in Miami!

you made the right decision. You're likely to see worse conditions than that at some point in your circumnavigation. Have confidence in yourself and confidence in your boat. You aren't in California anymore. Be assertive, be confident. Confidence will yield safety too.

'small craft advisory' are legit but you've got a capable experienced crew on a world-class top notch brand new racing yacht, so yee-ha!. So happy for you all. On the unfortunate side, Charlie got a hernia yesterday requiring surgery to repair so we are unable to make dinner Wednesday or the boat show this year. I'm so disappointed. It looks like you might make your slot in line to enter! "Never a dull moment" is right!

I agree with your decision to leave, irrespective of your goal to get to the boat show. Even with 30-35 knots of wind (provided there's no strong current against the wind), the boat could handle it. It wouldn't be comfortable, but it wouldn't be dangerous. Sorry for Holly's stress. I hope that she can eventually build the confidence that the boat is a safe platform even in worse conditions. When did THEY adopt such rules (you can't get out!)? I'm out of the loop now, but 20 years ago it was the captain's decision alone to leave or not. They would warn you against getting out, but not ban you.

Let's go! Good call. If it harms no one else governments should be advisory only - they seem to think they own us. Nanny states need to brought down to size. Everyone's looking happy, Stephane unleashed after days of hyper focus, and Holly gradually getting boundaries expanded, to one day be indistinguishable from Blackbeard.

The situation did not look like the north west coast ports where they close the inlets because there is breaking waves across the entrance. If their interpretation of the ‘rules’ any boat passing luperon should have stopped to pull in, obviously, inappropriate. Do you did the right thing and as the local said if you were going to another DR port that might be different . Sail on you got this! Cheers Warren

Invest in bubble wrap companies. Governments want to wrap everyone in bubble wrap. There is a funny tv ad her in Australia where a dad wraps his newly licensed son's car in foam mattresses and pillows. I don't want anyone to get hurt or you to damage your cat, but you are the best to make an informed decisions.

"You don't like breaking the rules"... well here is a rule you might get behind. Everyone, including you, who is born on this planet has the full moral right to travel to any part of it. Think of some poor black guy (former slave) stuck by accident of birth, on a small crappy Island with nothing but bannanas and fish, should not be prevented from leaving that place and going wherever he wants - no permission needed. Ditto for you. All this "show me your papers" nonsense needs to end (it is a recent invention and never existed for most of history). If you arrive and start committing crimes then you should be punished. But simply "being" in a place is not, and should not, be a crime and neither is leaving it. Well done Holly. Stand up a bit and feel proud. You have done nothing wrong in any proper sense of the word. Millions are illegally crossing our borders this year alone - the gig is up. It is done and over.

You’re proving my point of view why we need government reforms everywhere. It’s should be none of their business when you leave. Their expertise maybe great for the bay, but you just crossed an ocean, you’ve prepared for good and bad weather. It’s not their call. You should not need to get a document of approval. It’s like the amendments .. you should have the freedom to go when you want. That deserves two cookies.

not nice to see a Captain disobeying to maritime authority , the only reason why the Captain showed this kind of behavior is because he was in Dominican Republic because with the same scenario but in the United States he would have stayed anchored having a cup of tea obeying to the Cost Guard. You and your crew were lucky today because Mr Murphy was already in bed. Remember, one day you might be on a passage around that area and shelter be needed, Dominican republic won't be a alternative they know your name 👎

One key difference. The USCG will issue a small craft advisory, but they won’t stop you from going. You’re the Captain of your vessel. And responsible for your choices. The same is true of flying in the US. The FAA (aviation equivalent to USCG) will not prohibit you from launching in bad condition. They provide the information and then it’s up to the Captain to decide whether they have the skill, knowledge, and ability to handle those conditions.
