Great playing as always. I’ve always had a hard time describing the characteristics of the stainless steel drum sound. Maybe a little louder and more cutting than 3 ply, but still full. A great modern album recorded with stainless steel Ludwigs is Deloused In The Comatorium by The Mars Volta (although they’re pretty squished from compression). Great drumming on that album by Jon Theodore, a fellow Bonham fan

It's common knowledge the Stones had Musicland booked to record Black & Blue right after Zep finished Presence. Jagger was staying at the same hotel in Munich as Page who asked Mick if he could have an extra day in the studio before the Stones went in. Mick agreed and the day after asked Page if he'd finished the track. Page told him he'd done every guitar overdub on the whole album. That impressed Mick, though not as much as hearing a playback of Zep's version of Nobody's Fault But Mine. Like everyone else up till then Jagger had only heard Blind Willie Johnson's recording from the late 20s. I wonder what Blind Willie would've thought.

Yeah, Zep took it on quite the journey from the old original. I still am amazed at the hits they came up with for that ah, ah, ah section. So wild!

Holy crap …that chrome kit blasts the other out of water. It’s just so much fat round tones . And Bonhams style had changed a fair bit by then to. He was sat more upright and had started using those massive funky heavy fills a lot. He drops a monster fill very similar during in my time of dying. I think he was definitely getting heavier
@dirtydave2691 Жыл бұрын
The album version of this song is on my daily practice list. This live version kicks mucho ass. Well done again George. It's interesting as Bonzo subtracts and adds some killer licks here and there. The fills are magic! 4:29 and 4:37 and also 5:36 are so damn sweet.

@@BONHAMOLOGY "Sick Again" would be an absolute delight (if I may evoke a special request)! I know you have the album version & a '77 live take already uploaded (+ a thorough study video) but the '79 version released on the 2003 DVD is insane w/ that jazz-ish countermeasure guitar solo & the punk power-through second section. One of my fave! 🙉🥳

Awesome job!! 👏👏 I wonder would you do a video of you playing "Train Kept-A-Rollin'" from Frankfurt, Germany concert in June 30th, 1980 ? That live version of that song was the best out of all versions from that year. Even can you explain Bonzo's drumming style of that 80's version of that song?

Excellent as always George. What would you say was the main difference with the Stainless steel kit and a traditional one? Is it tone, volume or what?
@BONHAMOLOGY Жыл бұрын
Yes, tone is very clear but there is a warmth to it. They are louder as well, but not harsh. They are fairly dry sounding.
@Junowalker1 Жыл бұрын
Why did Bonzo add the third crash cymbal? What’s it for?
@BONHAMOLOGY Жыл бұрын
He used a 3rd crash many times in earlier years. I'm pretty sure he liked the tonal variety

WOW George that was great ! ! ! What are the sizes of the 3 cymbals on the right side of your kit ?

Nice job with the sync...tricky, this one. As always, great drumming. I really dig the sound of those metal tubs. Never met a stainless kit, so it's unclear to me if they sound deeper on account of tuning or material or both.
@BONHAMOLOGY Жыл бұрын
Hey Dave, I didn't think I'd like them so much, but I love them. They have a very clear, warm tone, they're a bit loud, but not harsh.
@davewestner Жыл бұрын
@@BONHAMOLOGY I agree with your adjectives and will add "focussed" to the assessment. The tuning seems very pure with less overtones. Wouldn't mind borrowing that kit for a few tracks. Cheers George!
