The secret to that amazing drum sound on that Queens of the Stone Age record is the producer Eric Valentine. He is the absolute king of drum sounds. My favorite example of his signature “punch in the gut” drum sound is Can’t Stop by Maroon 5. He knows how to get the drums to explode out of the speakers without taking it too far. @freelance_commie4 жыл бұрын
@@zapata9617 he’s referring to the repetitive nature of the music sounding electronic. Not just extracting the drum beat and looping/sampling it. If you hear a James Brown track you can hear how it’s sampled and used but it doesn’t sound like a breakbeat. It’s a funk song. The silver apples track sounds like it could be a contemporary electronic song. I don’t think he was trying to claim they were the first drums to play like that but rather so consistent and repetitive. And he’s completely right it’s a quality of the song.
@zapata96174 жыл бұрын
@@freelance_commie Thanks, the reason I thought he was referring to breakbeats is because the drum track does sound like it could be a sampled breakbeat. The breakbeat is a drum break in a funk song. Because it is isolated they ended up being sampled a lot. The beat he is showing does sound like it could be a breakbeat that was sampled so that's where all the confusion is, because it seems like he is saying it was pre-breakbeats

Just for the record that’s Clive Deamer on the portishead track, he plays on most of the tracks on that record. He’s an incredible drummer with amazing technique and feel and that makes up for a lot of the drum sound on that record. It’s one of the reasons Radiohead took him on

Kevin's drumming and more specifically the way he records them is what first hooked me on to Tame Impala. What a genius. My latest song owes a lot to Tame - would appreciate it if you guys had a listen!

The drums on New Person are what specifically sold me on Tame Impala's sound

Always loved the drums. Didn't have the patience to go deep, but hearing Kevin inspires me to learn more about the rhythms of his and others songs. Keeping the beat and harmony.

He's definitely chirpier than usual in this one, guess it's because of the drums. 🙌🏼 All your songs are more than good enough. Thank you for existing, Kev. ❤️

@@foiledits lol, maybe you're right. He's certainly way too reserved for a famous musician. Probably bc he's an introvert, I know what it's like.

I'm a drummer and i love Tame Impala, this is so perfect for me! So cool to know Kevin is also a big fan of Portishead. Yeah their beats are otherworldly. By the way i can do the douple kick, i love that technique but... I have never figured out how to play that Good Times Bad Times beat, it's super tricky.

Not much to argue with here. Sure, they're 1000's of other tracks that KP could have swapped out with these, but this is a really thoughtful and wide-ranging assortment of "rock" drum tracks. Thanks PF and KP, really appreciate it
