The reason is very likely that there's a hitbox/collider in front of his mouth and as soon as you touch it, everything cancels everything else and you're in its mouth.

@@tomleary508 they have this issue with grab attacks. One grab from Messmer that I saw had such a large hitbox that player got caught despite staying behind him (peak DS2 hitbox moment). This is likely also why grab attacks suck in Sekiro.

Not just the hippo, lots of enemies will grab you out of i frames, even the snake men and crawling albinaurics in volcano manor will do it.

@@Jt1Torso1Winabego I don't think grabs disregard dodge i-frames. Also, these weapon arts likely don't have i-frames to begin with. Anyways, what usually happens with hippo grab are 2 things: 1. For most of the attacks, it approaches slowly while tracking you the whole time. 2. It likely has grab hitbox/collision area too large to cover by dodge These coupled with the fact that a specific part of a dodge gets i-frame, not the whole animation... Means that by the time we are out of i-frame, we are still within the large area of the slow-moving fast-tracking grab hitbox.

As someone who didn't play the game, i am surprised to learn there are actually bunch of cool and fancy attack movesets for players to use, since almost everyone that i watched who played Elden Ring always use the boring basic attack to fight the enemies.

I swear those big enemies like the hippo are just there because someone thought the concept of a big hippo enemy would be cool. Like, you end up smacking them in the nuts or ribs while they flail about in big moves sometimes dragging you along with their huge ass hitbox while you occasionally just dodge. I think something like Midir from DS3 is a good example of a well executed "huge" boss fight. The large enemies like Soldier of Nokstella, or Centipede lady from DLC feel a bit unfinished because they have this weird mechanic where you are dragged along with them... It doesn't feel like that's intended? IIRC the hippos have that too.

I think that everyone of his attacks were pretty easy to dodge and telegraphed except for the 2nd phase spikes, those don't really make any sense to me.

@@gerwan9132 Where did I imply I can't fight them? I meant they're actually too easy to fight, because of how their hitbox works. Try any huge enemy with large "dash" movesets like the Centipede lady boss. You can get stuck in their body because of how huge their hitbox is WHILE you are attacking them. My main point is they just feel a bit unfinished. You can do the same thing with other large bosses such as Soldier of Nokstella for example from the basegame. It feels like the enemy draggin you with their huge body is a bug and shouldn't be happening.

Big hippos enemies are cool (even thought a mix like that one is goofy). I do like regular animals as a benchmark in games.

@@spod5849 When he spins and shoots spikes, roll to your right. You also need some distance for this to work, so you need to sprint back and then roll to the right. When he shoots spikes into the air, I honestly have no idea. Sprinting straight backwards avoids all damage like 80% of the time for me, but not always. It might just be a timed series of rolls, because sprinting and strafing doesn't seem consistent
