I see what you're saying but I interpreted the ending a little differently. He's not giving up his life for love, he's refusing a higher job that he's family has been invested in, thus showing the basic respect to his partner. He met her on equal footing, since it's implied that he'll still be a rabbi somewhere where there are fewer personal restrictions. I think it's fair, otherwise to merge their lives she would have abandoned everything.

@4:30 i think the conflicts were more between the families and external factors than internal It was actually a really good depiction because anyone can fall in love without outside factors influenceing your path/actions. It's when the love is challenged by outside forces that we can see if it's real❤🥳

TBH the depiction of Judaism in this show is super weird, because they show a very very "secular" type of an American Jewish community. In reality, dating a non-Jewish women would've been a much bigger problem from the start. Also, it's not allowed to influence someone to convert, and even if she did that type of conversion wouldn't be acknowledged by most of the Jewish communities.

The problem is .... Noah should have been more open to dropping his head rabbi dream once he and Joanne got serious about each other. I mean, can't he do something else like teach? Noah just seemed too modern and LA to have his whole identity subsumed as the head rabbi and his wife being the first lady. Cuz Joanne is just not converting ... she'd have to give up her career as a sex guru. Sex guru or Head Rabbi ... who can say which is more important?

Well said because often times, compromising in a relationship is really the women adapting to the man. In that case she'd give up her own spirituality and actual career for him and he wouldn't have to compromise anything except helping his family/friends accept her - which he should do anyway especially since he switched relationships so quickly.

Sorry for the crude analogy but instead of rebounding he was flipping. Supercharging the LA vibe with this show. Complete with the leather-clad Hot Rabbi who appears to be uber-liberal but still expects his future wife to be the most trad-wifey she ever could be.

I really dislike the zeitgeist's inability to have characters be good in some ways but flawed or even transgressing in others. The brother and her sister having something close to an emotional affair is an interesting story line and adults can watch it without condoning it. And while cheating is never good, it does happen and media exploring what it means and how people deal with it is important.

Has he officially turned down the head rabbi position? S2 may see him keeping secrets I predict, while he tries to give the relationship a bit more runway, hedging his bets under the guise of “exploring” both worlds, until both explode in his face. I predict season 2 will see things getting real wonky financially. He’ll take a pay cut, his family may cut him off financially…her podcast seemed like it was going in a big upwards direction… she may end up being his sugar momma of sorts. They’ll be forced to move in together possibly… she’ll get the ick from being the breadwinner…Throw in a pregnancy scare…when they break up he could probably still work his way back up at some synagogue somewhere far away. I see Adam Brody ending up at a small synagogue in a crunchy small town in northern Cali or the PNW with a sweet Jewish wife and a bunch of babies.

It's been awhile but Joanne definitely overreacts when Morgan tries to be a good sister and get's excommunicated for giving her sibling a heads up about Noah and his ex-wife. So her backstory as being erratic helps to a point. Also, she pretty quickly agrees to convert Juddaism. Perhaps less impulsive people would take a beat. Still I had fun and want to see more.

Thanks for reviewing this! I almost didn't watch this series because of a bit of a rom-com bias. Sometimes that genre is just too saccharine for me. After receiving recommendations from a few people I watched it, and I'm so glad I did! Super engaging story and well-developed characters. I also didn't think that Kristin Bell's character was so "bad" and agree that maybe they were referring to past actions? I also thought that the brother and sister's side plot was intriguing but yes morally questionable. I was looking forward to seeing how that developed, but apparently that won't happen. And that ending was so strange. It just didn't make sense to me that the rabbi would abandon his goal and dream of being head rabbi so hastily once he achieved it. That whole part of the series felt rushed and underdeveloped, and not authentic to the character.

I could see the writers intending for the sister and mother always ragging on Kristen Bell to be them misplacing their own insecurities onto her but because they kept playing it for laughs it wasn’t super intentional 🤷‍♀️
