The Best community to get the best possible feedback TAF: www.driesketels.com/Artist-Re...
In this video, I dive deep into the myth of the 10,000-hour rule. We've all heard it: "Practice makes perfect. If you practice for 10,000 hours, you'll achieve your dreams." They say you'll draw like Picasso, paint like Raphael, and become the best of the best. But here's the truth: practice alone does not make perfect.
Let's debunk this myth. You've been speaking English your entire life, practicing every day for decades. Yet, most of you don’t speak better English than me, and I only started learning English in my twenties. How is this possible? Because practice doesn't make perfect. Feedback and review do.
I'll explain why universities and art schools keep pushing the idea of practice, practice, practice. They need you to believe that practice makes perfect to justify their four-year degrees. But after those years of practicing, most art students don’t become successful artists. This is because practice alone is not enough.
What actually leads to improvement is feedback. Recording, critiquing, and publishing your work, and then analyzing the feedback from your audience, is key. It's about failing, learning from your mistakes, and continuously improving. This real-world feedback is what helps you grow, not endless hours of practice.
To truly improve, you need to step into the marketplace. Schools allow you to write essays for weeks, only for a professor to read and critique them because they’re paid to do so. In the real world, no one will read your work if it’s not good. The pain of nobody reading your work pushes you to improve, to critique yourself, and to get better.
So, how do you get this valuable feedback? Well, I wouldn't shamelessly promote my own program, but if I did, I'd mention the Artist Formula community I've developed. It's a place where you can post your art and receive feedback from high-level artists who are serious about their work and active in the marketplace.

Nothing works ever, just because someone told me it will. That's my motto. I'm sceptic from the beginning when I see any techniques that "will help". I just try to follow my braincycles. Practicing dry structural skills is one thing, but not two of my works had to be done the same way ever. If I have to put that project down, I put it down. The reason I will continue will come, without pushing it. I understand you about learning english, it was an avoidable subject for me all my life, but when I had to use it for 2 months at my summer job, I overcame any boundaries I didnt know I have. And now I dont give a f if I use it correctly or not. Love your vids Dries, cheers!

💙 I agree with what you are saying but I have a different definition of what “practice” means…practice is the act of getting better at any given task which includes repetition yes, but also reviewing and adjusting along the way. So yes, to me “practice makes perfect” …though I’m not sure perfection is achievable either depending on what perfection looks like to you and is subjective to others

DJ’ing being a passion of mine. I started back in the late 90’s. I started with two turntables, and a mixer. At the time, I hated math. So, I tried learning the BPM TECHNIQUE. I still couldn’t get it. I started using my own technique. Beats in my head started lining up like a zipper. The more I que’d in, and zipped up those two beats 🎧 in my head, I could then jog to records perfectly beat matched for as long as I wanted. I,2,3,4. I was able to jog 4 records with no bpm counters, and just TEAR THEM UP. It was like learning how to ride a bike. I’ve gone a few years without touching my decks at times. I can’t get right back on them, and within a few hours, BOOM. 💥 it took me a solid year of practicing this method. Well over 1,000 hours. But it’s my own style that is more precise than any stupid beat counter.

I unironically got worse after lot of practice: I just got better at repeating the same mistakes. I also had to unlearn ie anatomy to use rule of cool or good composition sometimes because effect is more important than rules. I learned the fastest after developing my own 3-4 step system. I made such a mental jump it’s crazy, I can just draw or paint whatever I want.

Thank you for insights! I remember while in school, during the rare art class available, hearing "Keep It Simple Stupid" or the KISS idea. This was an implication not to put details in artworks, which felt artistically stunting to me. In recent years, finally, i felt FREEDOM to ignore this old idea which was propagated! Now if i feel like details, there they go, if not, fine. So, it's our constant growth like a seed which creates the final plant, not straining against who we as the SEED have planted ourselves to be. All the best to all artist and lovers of the arts here enjoying the process 🌱🌱

When I asked for feedback, people fixed my work and advised me what's wrong with it, deep inside I was like: "wtf man, you supposed to say it is perfect and people don't like it just because they did not discover me yet." Once you are lucky and get the feedback, don't forget to use it well. Emotions will fade away after some time and you will start to appreciate the feedback for real.

well it depends on what you want from your art. If your goal is to work as a concept artist, character designer, 3d modelling, in general in entertainment industry than yes you need actual understanding of anatomy, perspective, composition, light, textures etc just in general how everything works. because your job is not to make art, your job is to design. and that's different. It takes a lot of time to learn to not have a style but to be so flexible that you adapt to a style of the project that you're working. For example you could be working on world of warcraft, very stylized and few years later on making a new cod - realistic game. But if your goal is to be an artist, to paint, to sell art than you can get away without deep understanding of anatomy, light, perspective etc if that's what you really want to do and you're drawn to abstract, not hyper realistic paintings. I think it just depends on what you really really like, what you enjoy. If you enjoy Albert Bierstadt nature paintings and you want to paint something like that than yes you need a lot of practice specifically studying nature. For me what I love is a mix of all that above. So I knew I'll need to practice a lot to develop my skills, artstyle etc. So practice do work and can be rewarding but you need to KNOW EXACTLY what you want from art and what you WANT to do with art. If you practice just to practice it will not work. You need to learn how to learn. putting lots of hours without understanding is pointless. Learning fundamentals is boring but if you know what you want - it will be rewarding. There are tons of great programs to learn on youtube but it actually takes a lot of work because if you cheat you will not develop your skills. I'd recomend FSD school of design. Feng Zhu (one of the best concept artist in the industry and owner of FSD school) has youtube channel and he's making lessons for free. there are 100++ episodes, start from 001. each is about 2 hours long. it starts from the very fundamentals.

The three lies are practice, portfolio and artist statements all of which where promoted by the university.artist statement where created by the galleries after a art market crash as a tool to get buyer to return. Then taken up by the schools as a manta that everyone needs. Most of the galleries that ask for them have never read them. Even true for the artist they sell
