I have been workin a security officer for years while going to school, my plan was to het in to computer networking. Took CCNA failed 2 times and third pass, applied for about 100 jobs, finally got NOC Technician . Its been 3 months now as a NOC, i get 30/hr from 22 i was getting as security officer. Hopefully this inspires someone out there in some ways!

This is exactly what I was hoping to do as well. I've been working as a security officer for years, but was always great with computers. I'm taking the Sec+ and CCNA next month as well as finishing this course in a few days. Hopefully I can get a job as a remote NOC Technician. What city you located in btw? I will be asking for no less than $25 in the DMV area. Also are you remote?

Thanks for the inspiration, I also work as security officer, I wanna take the CCNA how much is it and from 1 to 10 being difficult how hard is it for beginner to pass and get this cert.

@@Ib90 I’m going to schedule to take my CCNA in May. But the cost is $300. Cheaper than the CompTIA tests.

Personally speaking, getting that first job is tough. Like Josh said, there are no rules. Learn as much as you can, then pivot that to the next opportunity. Make yourself as uncomfortable as possible. The only two options are to learn, or quit.

I'm 21 and I have a computer networking technology cert with 3 years of on site IT for a chemical plant with a strong resume. Literally have gotten lots of compliments from it and cannot get a entry level noc position. My institution gave me a voucher to take the ccna but now im kinda thinking of just keeping my help desk job and start learning programming syntax.'

Dang sorry to hear that. I used to try really hard to get a NOC job but I couldn't haha. There just weren't any nearby and I couldn't find a remote one :). If you are interested in both Networking and Programming, check out Cisco DevNet if you haven't yet! developer.cisco.com/certification/

CCNA is great cert but I would skip it unless you are truly passionate of the Cisco CLI lol. I have my CCNA and im in a JR System admin role. It had nothing to do with my CCNA though. I moved up due to taking on more responsibility and asking if I could shadow the Sys Admin

Hey Josh! I’m purchasing your course when I get paid next week! I think it’ll be a great base for me. I am wanting to be a cloud engineer, I’m currently in an AWS/DevOps Program that starts in March and I want a bachelors degree. Do you think I should pursue the Network Engineering or the Software Engineering degree with a concentration in Java from WGU? I’m honestly kind of looking for the path of least resistance with WGU since I do so much self learning and am enrolled in the Cloud boot camp. However I did watch your video on the Network Engineering degree and know you think very highly of it. Would love some guidance! Thank you!

Hey! Thanks for joining the course! All you need is a web browser in order to use the Azure portal and the ability to RDP connect to other windows computers. Maybe I'm just being that one contrarian, but to me $15 dollars an hour is really nothing at all to be getting excited over and is almost more disappointing than encouraging. Many can go get work at target with zero course work and be making more out of the gate which requires zero extra time and thought outside of work and requires literally zero training and a mind that is half engaged once there. If I must take weeks and months of course work and the effort of more in depth interviews I want a little more monetary benefit out of it than the effort I would have to engage getting work stocking shelves or ringing a register.
@JoshMadakor Жыл бұрын
I’ll make a video addressing this later, but he’s not just getting $15/hr, he’s getting $15/hr and remote NOC experience that only took him one month to get and he will make the money back he spent on the course in a week. This is an INCREDIBLY low opportunity cost for a complete career change, and with what he is learning in this job, it’s going to be very easy to make more money, almost immediately or whenever he wants to get another job. If you get a job at target as a cashier for $15 hour, you have to physically go to work and the experience you’re getting is not going to do much for you in terms of future salary growth. Another way to think about it is, he got a paid internship in a week, and is now gettin valuable experience. I hope this makes sense. Another point is, obviously he could have held out longer for something that pays more, but hopping on this remote job was smart because he can comfortable get experience as soon as possible. Imagine he was picky and held out for something that pays $25/hr. There is an opportunity cost associated with “holding out”, and if possible, I will always err on getting experience as fast as possible then get a new job that pays more VS holding out for better paying jobs. “Velocity” in this regard is really powerful. But yeah again, I’ll make a video about this later so thanks for bringing this up 🤙

@@JoshMadakor While I understand some of your arguments, I just don't agree with it all. And it's nothing on you personally, I just think it's a real issue with the industry in general. While yes has he technically gotten his foot in the door there was nothing in this interview that actually went into any real detail about what kind of remote work he is ACTUALLY doing on a day to day and how that will help him make the jump to a higher paying job. A lot of weight is being put into the fact he now has a remote NOC position. And from the type of pay and the fact he simply has about a months' worth of course knowledge, I wonder question if the NOC position is more or less a helpdesk 1 position or worse just a call center where you are triaging calls more than you are learning deeper IT related information. While yes you do have to start somewhere, I question your quote of "it’s going to be very easy to make more money, almost immediately or whenever he wants to get another job." Without significantly more time and effort inside and outside of his current job studying and getting some certifications or similar. I don't see it being quite the easy stepping stone you make it. From what I have seen recently low tier entry level IT jobs without tons of time investments outside of work only yield to more entry level low paying work. None of this is a dig on you or this gentleman who has obviously put in some work. I just don't want others to get the impression that once you are in the door that it is nothing but smooth sailing from there because I just don't think that is the case in our current environment.
