"My dad went out for a pack of Balatro and never came home" should be used as an award category for every year from now on.

Because of how Jeremy's monitors and camera are positioned, it constantly looks like he's doing the Kubrick stare/ the "crazy" look they do in anime 😅 Really elevated the Mouthwashing discussion

I love this whole gang when they get passionate about things and go in depth... but my god do I LOVE listening to Jeremy Jayne when he gets passionate about things and goes in depth. That Mouthwashing discussion was great.

amazing episode, loved the conversation about insidious game mechanics feeding into the impulses of our brains, the dive into mouthwashing. balatro's award title is the funniest fuckin thing on the face of the earth. Maybe UFO 50 could have an award like "greatest console generation of all time" or something? or greatest console library? something riffing on it basically being an entire console's library in one package.

Listening to your discussion of Mouthwashing made me realize how much of that story went over my head,and inspired me to watch Risley's analysis vid, which in turn made me realize how much more went over my head. Lol.

I watched this episode of the podcast up til the Mouthwashing section then I put it on hold until I played Mouthwashing. I just finished it and man... There are some moments in the game that were incredibly strong. I'm glad you guys talked about it so much because I don't know if I would've played it otherwise (especially since I'm really bad with horror in any forms of art).

Re: Balatro - My opinion is that there's nothing inherently wrong with a game being addicting. What makes addiction so serious is the costs/negative effects of it - losing money, damaging your health, etc. Arguably a majority of Americans are addicted to caffeine, but because the negative effects of caffeine are so small, nobody really criticizes that. The only thing that Balatro costs you is the one-time price, and your time - which is true of literally any game or hobby.

For sure! That’s why I sorta came to the conclusion and wanted to be clear that it’s not Balatro’s fault and ultimately not a point that I blame on that game in particular, but more a feeling that I’m trying to work through about the patterns that make Balatro fun and whether those things are praise worthy. It’s absolutely one of the games that I played this year and enjoyed the most though no question.

Platformative Memory for Astro Bot 'cause it's a platformer and leans heavy on nostalgia.

I got a little sad watching the Game Awards and seeing how little time was devoted to indies and original stuff. By the end, all the trailers just start looking the same to me. Made me feel like washing my mouth...

39:07 as a non-smoker, there's a VR game I played where you can pick up a cigarette and smoke and it feels like the coolest thing lol. I don't have a desire to actually smoke but man does it feel cool when you take the cigarette out of your mouth and you see a puff of smoke.

Think they're overthinking Astro and need to just give it Funnest Game. Loved Jeremy's Mouthwashing segment!

The "They don't make em like they used to" award immediatley made me think of "This 78 year old company still serves their games the old-fashioned way" but "They made one like they used to" gets to the point a lot faster than that lol

Relevant to the similarities between Balatro and gambling, i highly recommend checking out Jimmy McGee’s history of gaming. It covers how the realms of gambling games and video games are not entirely distinct from each other and have closer ties to each other than you’d expect but also at what points these two industries diverged. This connection has been made more obvious with things such as randomized loot boxes in contemporary games, but the industries of gambling games and video games have always been connected to each other.

Hi Jeremy, sorry to tell you but the last level of Rock-On Island is completable without losing a life. And I am a HUMAN MAN, at least I'm very sure of it. Keep trying, it's my favorite game of all of them so far
The problem with Balatro is not so much the game itself, but an imitator coming along, and just making it into an exploitative gambling game. And I wouldn't put it past big publishers to exactly that.

WTF is Jesse's opening argument on Balatro, is he high? Very poorly expressed. So he dislikes rng and fun, ok.
@jesseguarascia3 күн бұрын
Poorly expressed? Probably, I’m still working through my thoughts on it, and doing that when it’s Praise Time didn’t help with that. But also I thought I was pretty clear that I love Balatro for those things, but I can also acknowledge that in the wrong hands they could’ve been deadly and that made me feel uncomfortable.
