My Optima battery was too low to crank my car, since my car just sits most of the time without being used. I bought one of these but there were no instructions. I basically want to charge up my battery. So quick question if you don't mind. Do I just remove my car battery, and just clip on to the terminals and just click 12V Repair? Then wait for the indicator to show full charge? Thanks man!

No need to remove the battery from your car. As long as you can reach the terminals with the alligator clips you should be good. You can even leave it plugged in all the time as the charger has the brains to go into trickle charge mode when the battery is at full capacity. They also make a quick connect that you can leave connected to your battery for the NOCO so you don't have to use the alligator clips. I have one on my camper van for the same reason. Question before a spend a $100 on something I may be getting wrong. So I want to take my boat battery out 12V and take it home, because my boat storage doesn't have a charger. I can take this and hook it up to my battery? and charge it? Does it actually fully charge the battery? How does the block just charge it without the block being plugged into the wall ?

This NOCO Genius is not a battery... it will need to be plugged into 110v power in order to charge your boat battery.

As far as I know from my use and experience, you should just use the NOCO charger in standard mode for your specific battery chemistry. Once the battery is topped off, it will then trickle charge as necessary. The repair function is for use when you have totally depleted the battery accidently or the battery seems to be having trouble keeping its charge or is discharging rapidly. I have definitely left my camper van's starter battery plugged in with the NOCO charger on the standard charge mode for long periods of time with no ill effects. I purchased this charger for my batteries, mostly AGM . Even a brand new battery at times are not delivered at 100% charge due to safety reasons I believe. Do you always do the repair mode after every full charge?????

I'm using AGM in my daily car audio system. Rather than spending $$$ on a hi amp alternator for a car I don't plain on keeping for another year or so, I plain on topping off the battery every month or so, is it OK to do the repair mode every charge???

My understanding is that you would only use the repair mode if the battery had been totally depleted or something extreme like that. You can charge up your battery any time with this, in fact you can leave it hooked up to just "maintain" the charge if you aren't driving it for a while. I do that with my camper van if I know its gonna sit for a couple weeks.

@@kampinglogik good to know. Ya I'm going to keep an eye out on my battery being almost winter here in New England and check it with the voltmeter weekly. In my case being car audio I know I'm drawing more than what's being supplied by my alternator, therefore taxing my battery.......

Well, if its a higher capacity battery, its going to take a while. For instance I have a 100 amp hour lithium battery for my trailer. If it is completely depleted it would take 10 hours to charge- 10 amps per hour into a 100ah batter... so it all depends on the capacity of the battery and the batteries state of charge when you start. No it will not. If you plug it in to the wall and it is not connected to a battery, it will only light the circle with the line in the top of it, the symbol closest to the smallest bar graph indicators (if that makes sense?)

Hey thanks for watching. Actually solid green is fully charged. When its glashing green its in the final slow stage charge. I'm not sure the state of charge percentage, probably 80 or 90%... basically the battery is ready to be used but not all the way full.

Not necessarily. Had mine on my truck battery about 6 hours, green light was solid with no other lights. Used an ancel battery tester and it only reads 12.15v. Battery tester says it's a good battery, but to recharge.

If the battery was completely drained it would theoretically take 8 hours... 10 amp charger should be putting in 10 amps per hour... 10 amp hours x 8 hours should equal your 80 amp hours. Smart chargers slow down a bit at the very end to protect the battery so it might take a touch longer than that - but that should be fairly solid rule of thumb

@@joseguzman6326 unfortunately I don't have any experience with LTO batteries. This being a 12v charger, I'm not sure what it would do for a battery that wasn't "fully charged" until 15.2v. It does work for LifePo4 witch is 12.8v so, its possible! I just couldn't tell you one way or the other.

I won't advocate for anyone to use these in a manner not recommended by the instructions. But honestly, I use this all the time on my camper van and leave the NOCO plugged into the wall, and then reconnect the alligator clips when I re-park the van. There are multiple safety features on the NOCO unit, such as not allowing the unit to "turn on" when it is not correctly connected to the battery, and also there is a delay when the NOCO is connected to the battery before it switches into the charge mode. I have never had an issue after regular use for several years. But, as I said - I wouldn't tell someone else to use it in a manner contrary to the instructions, and there could be something I just don't know about it.

Yes as long as the connections to the battery are solid the NOCO should automatically detect the battery and begin charging. As soon as the indicator lights start flashing you can switch to the proper battery type selection. You cannot change the battery type unless it is connected to a battery. I hope that makes sense? Unfortunately I don't think so... I actually think I tried this a while back... ended up needing to wait 30 minutes to turn over a van. As I understand it- the 12v supply is giving you just the 12 volts at 10 amps continuous... no extra boost of voltage, so the battery would need to be brought up to a voltage high enough to turn over the starter on its own. The major difference is that this setting wont shut down when the battery is "fully charged" the way the other settings will with their set algorithms for the different types of batteries. My understanding is that it could be hooked up to your vehicle's main battery cables in place of the battery, say if you are working on the vehicle or some situation like that, where you were not actually trying to charge a battery, but need 12v power.

By 12v generator - are you referring to a power station? Assuming that you are, these power stations have their own charge controller built in, so you would want to use a 12v power supply with the correct connection. These NOCOs do have a 12v "supply" function that will give just a steady 12v current... but you'd have to rig up the correct connect, and then the NOCO would essentially be a $100 wall wart... does that make sense?

@@kampinglogik When I say 12v generator, it is a generator that uses a 12v battery for electric start, the connector is the same as the NOCO connector, just snap it on - I mean the connector that connects to the electric starter and battery is the same interface as the NOCO. The idea is to bypass the battery and just leave the generator plugged in all the time.

@@kampinglogikSo, after talking to an engineering friend of mine, you can't just plug the NOCO directly into the inputs of the electric starter on the generator. First, the inrush capability of a battery is greater than 30amps, and the NOCO is rated less than that, second, there may be so electronics on the starter that may attempt to trickle charge battery when it is on, which you don't want to happen. In my case, I simply don't need the battery, but the starter is designed for it so, I guess I'll just use the battery.

Yeah I just revisited the manual, there is no specific "repair" mode for 6v, only options for charging. I don't have any experience with 6v to know whether running the "12v repair" mode would help or harm a 6v battery. Sorry!

@@kampinglogik Thanks for the quick reply. I decided to connect a good 6 volt battery in series with the bad battery and run the 12 volt repair mode. After one cycle the battery is floating at .16 volts higher. Not much but a little better. The battery is now steady at 5.58 volts. I'll continue to run it in repair mode as long as the voltage continues to rise. Thanks again.

Yes the Noco needs to be plugged into a 120v AC outlet, so a standard wall socket or a generator, I've even run it off the AC inverter in my van. The Noco has no internal power or battery of its own.

Not for deep cycle batteries like this. For an engine start battery there are jump starter boxes to get a car battery enough juice momentarily to crank the starter but those will not do anything for a deep cycle unfortunately. I've seen videos of guys using big jump starter boxes to run a winch for a short time as well...

The actual amp hour capacity of a typical vehicle starter battery is pretty small, so a 10 amp charger like this one should have it ready to turn over in 30 minutes from my own experience. Now if its been sitting for 5 years and is just totally empty, it could be a few hours for sure. But this should not be confused with an instant jump starter.

Oh bummer, sorry to hear that. What setting was it on? I use mine regularly for several different batteries and its always worked great.
