So much for the solar maximum theory of having a poor NLC season this year. Thus far it has been good with last night becoming the best display I have seen in decades. The show started just after 23:00 and I had to convince myself that I was not seeing whispy cirrius cloud.
When I knew for certain what I was seeing was a massive display beginning I got all into the car and drove up to my favourite NLC viewing spot. (Clabby Mountain)
I can say for sure that this was the strongest and most sustained display I have ever seen (in 30 years of observing the phenomina). It never showed any moments of weakening and even when I decided to go to bed after 02:30 it was still owning the sky.
