She didn’t realize what she had til it was gone. “When you love someone you work it out, you have to be careful with it, you might never get it again” is too spot on👏🏻 she loved him but let outside influences cloud her judgment and nit picked at things that could’ve been easily worked out and solved. It’s clear that he had true love for her and her for him but she didn’t want to go through working things out and instead just wanted to take the easy way out which is a shame, ended up with a guy who doesn’t have true love for her.

This movie broke me. I really felt for Jake's character because he saw what it was, he saw what she was denying and she wasn't willing to accept her own denial that she was exactly where she wanted to be. We have all been there, and we have to deal with being broken knowing one day it will all be for nothing. Life is unfair.

This is what happens when you are unable to accept who you are and be comfortable with yourself. If you put fear first. You will be unable to accept others, too, and that will kill what could be a loving relationship. It's such good writing.

This movie is so touching because I once was in the same situation, when my ex wife thought I was useless, weak, so disbelieved in me and I felt so small. This film is an artistic masterpiece. We have a brilliant cast, a brilliant director and a perfect story line that many people can relate to. It shows the antithesis of creative and neurotic minds through the portrayal of Amy Adams character, Susan. It really makes you think, and what Amy said that the start about it being a cautionary tale is so true. Susan’s character is a strong character with a good mask that she hides behind. The fact that she gave up her true love for someone that doesn’t love her but has a lot of power and money really shows the human condition. Films like this are priceless, after watching this film it made me think of other brilliant films like ‘We Need To Talk About Kevin’ and ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’. The moment when Susan at the end of the film realises the extent of her cruel decision was the perfect ending, you can see the emotion in her eyes as she is filled with existential dread. Jake’s character, Edward Sheffield was a brilliant. Two of the best actors of our time. Roberto Andes would’ve been so much better if either Rami Melik or Christian Slater had played it. And Ray Marcus would really suit Jared Letto too. Toms message of not throwing away people you love is such a strong one that we can all relate to. Truly an admirable director. And the director of photography was perfect for the role. The colour tones in this were perfect, the grain and grit really boosts the overall experience and weight of the film, the colour tones are just as important as the story itself. The way they have used Photography and Cinematography is perfect. Truly a flawless film, I can’t think of anything that I didn’t like in this. I would love to read this in a book. Also imagine if Jeffery (Negan from TWD) played Ray?

Your kinda missing the point of the film. While your point is right to what people say listen however that isn’t what this film is about. She leaves the love of her life due to outside influences and says she has to move on because Jake’s character cannot “provide that”. The entire story is about how Amy Adam’s character ends up unhappy and dissatisfied with her life and comes full circle to realize (once receiving Her ex husbands book) how she played herself. She ruined her own life and partially his (for a time) all because of her own selfishness and lack of effort and outside pressure. So yes, He is technically wrong for “not listening”, however he isn’t wrong when he is trying to stop her from making the worst mistake of her life. I think people also, when telling someone they “don’t love them” and when that person wholeheartedly does, need to stop and realize just what type of life they are about to destroy. Not enough people see these things, and often find out too little too late.

The ending was so brutal and disturbing. Edward did not met her and we see Susan sitting alone. At the surface it seems Edward did all of this for revenge. This might be true but this also goes to show that our actions can have serious repurcussions for someone. We can hurt someone to such an extent that they can never be the same person again. This movie made me realise that we say and do a lot many things to other people without even thinking twice about the ramifications it can have but when we do realise what we have done it's already too late to repent.

Just wanted to drop my two cents. I was in a relationship for three years with somebody who fell out of love with me quickly. Even afterr the first betrayal I forgave her. I chose to try to mend it, to love her. She was extremely stubborn. She treated me like garbage all the time, and I kept loving her. The truth is it was my fault. She fell out of love with me because I was a pushover. I never stood up for myself. I let her walk all over me and when she had gotten what she wanted from me she would toss me out. Learn from me. Don't make the same mistake I did and put somebody up on a pedestal who does not deserve to be there. I don't know how she's been. I don't check her social media. I've actually done a lot to put myself at peace, forgive her, and move on because I don't want to live with hate. I don't want her to continue to have that hold over me. She was somebody who I thought could be my everything, and my best friend. Instead she ended up being a nightmare and a plague on my life. I didn't deserve that.

I've been thinking a lot about this movie and all the different perspectives people have on the comments. Some believe she is bad, some consider it's just fair. What I've come to unterstand is the mistake she made was having that life she needed through someone else instead of herself. She wants stability so she goes with the guy that offers her that. That makes me think that being with Gyllenhaal's character was but a way of filling that "artistic", "romantic" interest she had. What I'm trying to say is that she is not a bad person, she just had to understand that the void we humans have sometimes have to be filled within ourselves, otherwise we will always feel unsatisfied.

This is mean : The policeman in the movie symbolizes Edward's new wife who believes in him and encourages him to overcome his fear and weakness to achieve his dreams Despite the problems and crises they went through (which was symbolized in the story by the cancer that the policeman suffers from), she was encouraged to realize his dreams

I know the message is about not throwing away love. But what if they acknowledged her unhappiness, it obviously stemmed from her growing up with her mother. Stayed or didn’t she’ll stay unhappy either way. Those sad eyes are a call for help, it’s a reflection, it’s not just - you’re eyes look sad. No excuse for her actions with the baby though, of course that’s infuriating.

I never looked at romantic love as making me weak. Love was the only thing that inspired me to do anything brave/strong. It made me fearless. I raised my money from low five figures to six figures because of love and family. Without it - as the comedy movie about heartbreak title says - I'm Better Off Dead. Anyone who doesn't love is not alive - they're already dead.

Because she had high expectations from life and him. She tired herself by setting the bar higher and higher until she's lost. Sometimes the real beauty is in simple things, that's what susan couldn't see. She didn't deserve a guy like edward, who is caring, loving, romantic.
