I’ve picked up on how people who speak with a lisp or speech impediment are almost instantly categorized as being developmentally delayed, though more often than not, that’s the only thing that is off about the way they express themselves with nothing else suggesting that they are. The speech impediment can affect so so much
@jonathancobb35222 ай бұрын
I'm fairly certain the I have a subtle lisp, I struggle pronouncing words with the letter S and that struggle entangles itself with other words I pronounce after saying that formidable S word. @ArchimedesDev2 ай бұрын
@@Hello-hh2tgWell this is simply false. Lower pitched voices ARE harder to hear, both because of how your vocal system has to form tones and because lower pitched noises in general ARE harder to hear & pick up on. You can experience this for yourself by simply searching up something like A1 to A5 sine wave. Also for lower pitched voices, when needing to be heard (with strain) you need to drop your jaw low, speak loud, and end every sentence with a HIGHER note. In my personal experience, that does get a lot of people asking if I am Australian or a Zealander, funnily enough. The second best method I've found (for the original commenter), is to just speak in a HIGHER tone at all times. I have to strain pretty hard to talk "normally" so I try to stay in the mid-high bass or low alto range as little as I can (It's hard to hold a conversation like that). The best method is 100% changing your vocal flow's shape (I "cannon" my voice through the mouth) and sticking to your most comfortable speaking tone (I peak at F2 when speaking both loudly and quietly, and regular speach stays mostly in E2 and D2 {Yes this is my regular voice, yes I am a DB / SB Oktavist, and yes E2 is indeed the lowest note in bass [lowest 'normal' vocal range]} no matter inherit volume) then you will be heard very reliably, regardless of tone (source: I have a thing for etymology, and I also have a deep voice).

What helped me as am English speaker get a control of inflection was learning French. Since what separates a question from a statement in French is in the deflection. I can say the same words but with a deflection upward it is a question and downward is a statement. I found by implementing this technique in Mt native tounge, I portrayed more confidence and my words were treated more important than before.
@LuckyCharms777Ай бұрын
It’s pretty much how inflection works in English too; it’s like the difference between a question, a rhetorical question, and a statement. For example: “Don’t you think?” Depending on whether it’s asked with an upward, flat, or downward inflection determines if it’s a question, rhetorical question, or a statement that you’re expected to agree with.

And of course, ALL of this is up for interpretation. For example, the use of fancy words CAN indicate someone that's highly education, but more often it's someone that is highly pretentious, or even someone PRETENDING to be educated. You see this a lot of court rooms when you have everyday street criminals addressing a judge, or if a worker is having an annual performance review. When people see videos like these, they have to understand that NO ONE THING is going to tell you everything about the person, you have to take in ALL of it, and then make the proper assessment.
@ShyCat-r1oАй бұрын
It's worth noting that all of this affects how we are perceived, yet it has no substantial correlation with who we are or what we are like. Most of the time, isong these cues to judge someone leads to inaccurate results. Be careful trusting a silky smoothe voice if what it says is questionable. And maybe trust a higher pitch (perhaps simply feminine) voice if it speaks reason.

@did10xang3620 күн бұрын
Tone: Calm, steady tone conveys authority and confidence, perceived positively. Lower-pitched, even tones signal competence and capability. Higher-pitched, tense tones indicate anxiety or insecurity. Softer, empathetic tone creates warmth and approachability, perceived as caring and understanding. Word Choice: Sophisticated vocabulary suggests high education and intellectual inclination. Formal language implies seriousness and professionalism. Informal language/slang suggests a laid-back demeanor. Action-oriented words (achieve, goal) denote drive and success orientation. Words like care, support, help show compassion and community focus. Language reflects cultural background, influencing perceptions. Pace and Rhythm: Fast speech conveys enthusiasm and confidence, but excessive speed might signal nervousness. Slow speech suggests thoughtfulness and calmness, but excessive slowness might indicate lack of confidence. Balanced pace crucial for competence and relatability. Rhythm and pauses convey control and confidence; hesitations show uncertainty. Intentional pauses emphasize key points, enhancing authority. Accents and Dialects: Accents reveal origins and identity, affecting listener perception. Certain accents perceived as sophisticated or friendly; others stigmatized. Accent's impact on credibility depends on context (formal vs. informal). Shared accents foster connection and trust; distinct accents might cause alienation. Inflection: Upward inflections (uptalk) suggest uncertainty or need for validation. Downward inflections communicate finality, assurance, confidence, and assertiveness. Varied intonation conveys authenticity; monotone voices indicate disinterest. Body Language: Nonverbal cues (eye contact, gestures, posture) profoundly influence perception. Eye contact, expressive gestures, open posture enhance persuasiveness and trustworthiness. Avoiding eye contact or closed body language suggests nervousness or insincerity. Alignment between words and body language creates powerful, genuine message; mismatches cause dissonance. Overall: Speech is a multifaceted reflection of personality, upbringing, emotional state, and intentions. The interplay of tone, word choice, pace, accent, inflection, and body language shapes how others perceive a speaker.

@@sirmeurtrier6951 If you thought deeply about anything at all whatsoever, you'd understand that it's incredibly difficult to convey what you really want to convey to people who don't share your brain and would realize that it's objectively better to use plain and simple words that everyone knows instead of making new shit up just to be vague and obtuse. Luckily I don't have to worry about you having deep thoughts when your deepest thought ever was "if I use a word that other person has to look up in dictionary, I can feel more intelligent than them, even if I really am not and will never admit it".

The amount of times I’ve used Ebonics/AAVE because I’m Black and people have perceived me to be dumb. Even though they copy the same phrases and words to be trendy, but it’s dumb when I do it. It shows the lack of education on dialects. Little do they know, I’ve always been an A student in Reading, Writing, Language Arts, etc. And top of my class. As soon as we get into a topic, all of a sudden their biases go away. I don’t care. There is no “proper" way to speak. It’s just Standard English in its form right now. Most of them don’t even realize they use AAVE all the time. It’s just wrong when Black people do it. Even though we made it a thing. All of them use the word "cool" and that comes from Black Jazz musicians in the 20’s-30’s, as well as "groovy". Even "For real" is AAVE. But they perceive whatever they want, to be "proper"

@nonexistenthandle9922 If you think there’s too much slang, then keep yours mainly relevant to your regional or ethnic culture like every other normal person does. Pop culture constantly makes it seem like black people don’t have variable slang in a country where almost 4 million square miles are split into 50 culturally distinct regions, just so they can commodify the language easier. No black person is ever using black slang from every single region in America, that’s the whole reason why regional accents and terminology exists in Black America to this day. You’re complaining that the ocean is too big, but you only ever need to wade in the shore like most other people do.

Personally, i like to try and mix more exquisite words with slang (the mixture varies depending on my mood, i've noticed) I feel like it helps normalize more advanced/articulated speech, especially when you have an exact word to express just the right meaning and feeling that you're aiming for Sentence structure, by the way, is something that didn't get mentioned in this video, but IS a facet of speaking Which, i just made use of in the line above, putting "by the way" before continuing to explain As for it's effects, i think that's yet to be explored, but hey, that's something to explore in one's free time

I have social anxiety, selective mutism and I'm going to get tested for autism. Selective mutism is the inability to speak sometimes. For me, it's around anyone outside my family. I can speak now but sometimes it's extremely difficult. So of course it affects the sound of my voice, but I got no control over it. It's extremely frustrating and makes me very depressed sometimes. I take medicine now and I'm doing a little better. I've suffered on my own for the past 10 years since I realized I had the problem after graduating high school, because I'm completely fine around my family so I never really noticed it. Also, I must be weird because my voice does NOT get higher during anxiety! Instead it gets super deep! It's deep and quiet and monotone, sounding almost like I'm hoarse and that's how it feels too. Is that abnormal? Can't be the only one like this.

It has rarely steered me wrong, but I get that it can be bad to be hyper critical, but listening to how people speak, observing their body language, it's been useful for informing my judgments about whether or not this stranger I've encountered is what I call a "high risk" person. By that I mean people with habits that attract problems. It doesn't have to be nefarious, just any extra troubles that might follow someone that I don't want to be around. If you get someone speaking enough, or just listen enough and pay attention, people reveal who and how they are. It doesn't take very long. But yes, give a chance, be patient, sure. Leave a little room for doubt. But trust and observe the patterns of speech and behavior.
