Nocturne by Reginald Smith Brindle

British composer Reginald Smith Brindle (1917-2003) wrote this guitar piece for a young Julian Bream (1933-2020) in 1946. After studying composition in Italy with Ildebrando Pizzetti and Luigi Dallapiccola, Brindle returned to England and attended a meeting with the Philharmonic Society of Guitarists. A guitar enthusiast himself, Brindle was impressed by the talented young Bream.
Brindle was a prolific composer for the guitar, writing 66 works for the instrument. His compositional style went through many phases, including serialism, electronic music, and aleatory music. This Nocturne uses a rather jazzy harmonic language, perhaps the result of the composer playing jazz saxophone in the 1930s. The piece sits fairly low in register on the guitar and is enchantingly dark, murky, and meandering.
