I'm finding it hard to understand why this is used, and why one would study it. Maybe it's intended for people who are already studying it. But without context, the "why" isn't at all clear.

Thank you for watching and providing feedback. This video is mainly for conceptual knowledge, so it answers *what* a major scale is and *how* it works on the guitar. By using the Carulli example at the beginning of the lesson, I try to illustrate the importance of this knowledge by showing how the major scale is applied in musical compositions. In addition to understanding how music works, a good reason to study scales is to improve your technique (great for synchronizing your hands!). This particular pattern of playing the major scale on guitar is also great for improvisation (check out 5:49). There is only so much that can be expressed in a short video like this, but you make a good point about clarifying the “why.” Thank you for your feedback - I will be applying it to future lessons.

Sans pareille! Great tempo, regular, even, but expressive and not machine-like. Good intonation - most maestro grip so hard they bend the strings and lose tune on the fret pressure. This is all in tune. Not easily done. Good performance.

Aka, the "spider exercise". I saw many people recommending this. I played guitar for about two years and biggest problem for me was lack of mobility and independence of my left hand fingers. I thought I could never play anything but basic chords because of it. One day I finally decided to stick with this practice after I saw a video where a guy filmed his 2 week results after doing it every day. I did the same and the results were great. It made me feel like I could really play if I stuck with practicing. Some advice for beginners: - He showed multiple variations of this. Stick with the first one he showed for a few weeks until you can do it faster and smoother. I don't skip strings but go through each string (1 to 6) then reverse. Do it with your index finger around the 5th fret as that's the easiest position for beginners. - At first, you don't need to play the strings with your right hand. Just practice the positioning (tips on the strings, close to the next fret, curl your fingers to avoid touching more than one string) and the movement pattern. Then add strings. Practice slowly to really put your mind to it - think "I am moving the middle finger on string X and touching with my tip only". - Warm up well. I am sure this is not a big deal for experienced guitarist but for beginners, this will tax your joints. Warm up with stretches or wash your hands with warm water to get your joints to run smooth. Don't do this for more than 5 min at a time, otherwise you may cramp up or feel stiffness the next day. - Practice this daily for 2-3 weeks even if it's the only thing you do on guitar. Five minutes a day, run this exercise 2-3 times and you will see progress.

Thank you! I think it is easy for us to focus on our fretting hand because it does most of the moving around, but there is so much nuance to the plucking hand. I think it is something we all need to keep working at.
