I agree that this is the real ending, but I felt some amount of criticism from the symbolism - I think the film strives to say that such sacrifices aren't worth it, and the way we romanticize the struggle is an expression of nihilism more so than love. Asking, was this what you wanted? The plot points that lead me to this idea are as follows: >The dinner scene, where dwindling crowds are discussed >The cyclical nature of the deal with the devil, implying cyclic suffering is a (meaning one, but not the only) predecessor to notable art. >Self sabotage is idealized as necessary for the art while also ever increasing in scale >If we are to believe the death ending, the climactic piece was never played to begin with >Our main character didn't actually write anything. She played the work of others' This is the symbolism I saw in the film, though I can't say I fully agree with the conclusion it leads to. I don't think it's criticizing people who make art because they're hurt, though, but rather those that hurt themselves for clout in order to boost reception of their art.

I didn't think the ending was that confusing. In her last moments of "sacrifice," she was imagining being happy. One of the biggest signs of this is Violet/Vivian (her twin) smiling and clapping in approval. We know that she would NEVER do that genuinely, especially because of what we witnessed literally minutes before. She was dying, in reality, but in her mind, she was becoming something "great."

Prior to the “performance”, Vi tells Juliet there are no scouts from Juilliard and it won’t matter how she performs either way because nothing will change. Whether she killed the performance or killed herself, it doesn’t matter. All of her sacrifice was for one fleeting moment. Whether she was given a standing ovation or lay bloody on a statue, the people carry on indifferently. Classic soul sell tale….. Lot of strong other interpretations in this thread though.

As we watch the movie we watch juliet turn into a vindictive and aggressive jealous character, my dad suggests that her actions weren't actually her, but her h see the influence of the pressure in her environment, the juliet we see die isn't actually a real person it's a symbol of the innocent version of her that she killed in order to come out in top. And so that would mean her recital performance is real, but she's a new worse version of herself now. the fact that no one sees her dead body proves proves that. hope you enjoyed like i said

Nocturne uses a lot of symbolism while explaining the trade of soul for fame and success with the devil. So when the movie shows Juliet dying it symbolizes the death of her soul, but she will continue to live with her earthly life.(In all glory that the devil promised her ofcourse!) As for Moira she also sacrificed her soul and could have lived a life in limelight but she regretted it so much that she also end her earthly life. (Just a different point of view)

Okay I kinda interpreted the two endings as happening simultaneously as in while Juliet was actually performing (not chickening out) that piece was her signing the contract to sell her soul to the devil and whilst playing her soul runs away and commits suicide and jumps into the lake of fire or whatever which is why no one notices or looks when she’s lying there after jumping off the roof. On the complete opposite hand the scenario where Juliet performs beautifully her sister smiled and applauds which after what Juliet did and how mad Vivian was...Vivian probs would not smile and clap...so that was just a figment that the devil is “giving” her in exchange for her soul. And the irony of no one noticing her jumping off the roof is juxtaposing her standing ovation. My idealistic self wants the former to be true and for Juliet to at least be alive without embarrassing herself but the latter is so much more blumhouse

Very late saying this but thank you madam or sir for a clear explanation of both possibilities. I needed this video to make sense of things, for which I am also grateful. I feel like juliets death symbolized how it is for young creatives who sacrifice so much and work so hard to never ever be noticed by anyone. Especially in the end when everyone didn’t even notice her body. but thats just my perspective.
@PynkSpotsYT2 жыл бұрын
I have a little theory about the ending (reading someone else's comment here made it click into place): The final step for Juliette was written as 'VI Sacrifice' in which "VI" is roman numerals for six but also is Viviane's nickname (thank you to @dreimann for this!). When Juliette gets the book, Moira's sixth step has been ripped out, which makes me think that it is different for everyone (it would likely be a similar picture of a person jumping to their death, but the actual sacrifice needed would be different - keep reading for an explanation of what I mean by this). My theory is that Moira refused to make whatever her real final sacrifice was, and thus had to sacrifice her earthly body, thereby dying in the real world. She was given an eternal fantasy of success as a reward for the steps she completed and for sacrificing herself, which is why her ghost is smiling. On the other hand, Juliette's final sacrifice was Vi. Juliette made this sacrifice by completing all the steps and irreversibly severing her relationship with her sister, and then symbolically sacrificing her soul, as Lucas said in the video. Almost all the steps in the book required Juliette to take things away from Vi, essentially "sacrificing" not only her relationship to Vi, but also Vi herself (her future, teachers, relationships, happiness - which is why Vi says this at the end during their last conversation/fight). So, ultimately, the real sacrifice was Vi, not Juliette (as it would seem if we believe she died in earthly form), at the cost of Juliette's soul/goodness/whatever and her connection to her sister. Furthermore, I think that the dying soul is smiling to indicate that though Juliette was able to achieve a MOMENT of success in the real world, she is also operating under quite a bit of delusion, as evidenced by Vi smiling at the end, when we all know that she would not be happy for her sister's success at this point. It feels like the Devil is giving her a delusional fantasy-version of reality - she may play well now, but as both Vi and her teacher told her, it's too little too late. She will not achieve success and she has envisioned it (there's no Juliard scout, babe!), but the Devil will be gassing her up, making her think her she's more talented and entitled than she really is and she'll go on to live in angry mediocrity like her former teacher, likely becoming another agent for the Devil as he seemed to be (recall their fight about how she is best suited to become a teacher). Which makes sense of my one question I had watching this film - what does the Devil really get out of this? And endless cycle of souls! Deals with the Devil are almost always portrayed as having a "monkey's paw" effect, and I think this movie is no exception, as indicated by the story of Tartini, who made a deal with the Devil for one moment of brilliance, but then was back to mediocrity afterwards (no shade to Tartini, that's just how it is portrayed in the movie!).

I agree that Juliet never played the Concert. She burns the notebook and her subtle talent was obtained after she found the notebook by burning it prior to the presentation her talent goes away with it. Her sister goes visit her right before the performance to play mind games and remind her of her stage fright in the past to mess with her head. She has a panic attack and leaves the stage and jumps off. Her sister smiling in the end is of pleasure to see Juliet fail and run off the stage. If you notice, the set was played, but by someone wearing long sleeves because the show must go on. Juliet was wearing a sleeveless dress.And her body there while everything just continues normally shows how that school just treats their professors and alumni as “ bodies “. As the Show must go on.

It's literally a true story on how the devil tricks people by their desires. This is the way the very best entertainers get to the top. They make a deal then pay the price. During the performances they are possessed literally borrowing out their bodies. She didn't know what happened and was confused. It got too much for her and took her own life like some of the greatest musicians. Either way you pay. The teacher was there to encourage her to keep going just like the music executives. He almost had an evil presence. The whole thing is a lot more deeper but I'll leave it there.

Yes this is also a rly fresh theory, some viewers believe that burning the book allowed her to live the life that she wanted, and on the other hand, some viewers believe that after burning the book it's affects still wouldn't wear off because she already wrote and eventually fulfilled that 6th step. And finally, Moira is an anagram for Moria ((or Moriah)). No not the mines of Moria in Middle Earth but the biblical Hebrew Moriah. In Hebrew it means "God is my teacher." So that's a dead ass reference to the devil being the "God of Earth" and tricking people into worshiping him. Also, Mount Moriah is the biblical location where Abraham was asked to "sacrifice" his son that he loved most. And last but not least, the struggle between Juliet and Viv is a symbol to the struggle between Angels and Demons. Viv plays like the devil is outside, ergo she is warding off the devil. Moira and subsequently Juliet plays as if the devil is in the room , embracing the devil.

So what about Vivian? Any thoughts on why she is so snotty to Juliet and two faced from the beginning even though they shared their mother’s womb? “wombies”
@lucasblue203 жыл бұрын
Hey, i hope you're ready for a long answer cus i have always had a little theory about this that i wasn't sure about including in the video haha first of all i love your question and find your take super interesting cus when i first saw the movie i thought Vivian was really nice and supportive until Juliet began to betray her and eventually ruin her potential. However, I always had a slight suspicion that Mr. Cask had some sort of demonic or devilish presence. He dropped several lines throughout the film that sort of implied that he knew what was happening to Juliet, it's almost like he has the same effect on his students that the devil had on his student: Tartini. This would likely explain why he surprisingly appears in the room when Juliet is alone playing the Devil's Trill for the first time. So i think he has an effect on his students to almost carry out the devil's work or something like that. And i think this is why you're seeing Vivian become so vindictive. His presence in the room i think may push his students (Moira, Vivian, and eventually Juliet) to become more jealous, cruel, and vindictive. Upon second watch I noticed this more but wasn't sure about including it in the video haha but yeah those are my raw thoughts on that (just a side theory). Hope it helps! It was crazy to see the lengths Juliet would go to achieve this long lasting success and made me think of the quote from avengers infinity war, where gamora asks “what did it cost” and thanos replies with “everything.” It seems as if to achieve this long lasting success or goal you have to sacrifice so much but it makes you think if the cost is really worth it. For example, Is being this famous pianist really worth losing your soul over? I know I don’t know much of anything(I’m 15 lol) but to me life is so much more than our success or achievements but the people we love and who love us in return, I feel like if Juliet would have settled for “mediocrity” and learned to enjoy the simple things in life and cheer on her sisters success she would have been so much happier, but thats just my interpretation. To me is possible that she didn't jump as everyone ignored her body and that's difficult to do when people passed close by. Her medication play a large role in the movie so it's possible that all was in her head. Her second teacher said that she was technically better than Vivian she just lacked the passion, so her medication in conjunction with the things she did under the guidance of the book perhaps help her to put some passion into her music. Great video btw
@lucasblue203 жыл бұрын
This is a cool theory, it’s great that you bring up her medication which certainly seemed like it played a part in her delusions and change in attitude. I do think the final shot with passers by was a metaphor (not a real event) but I feel you. I like your take, thank you so much for watching!!

This explanation makes the movie seem a lot better. And I also think Juliet actually died, it’s the most logical conclusion since Moira actually died. Didn’t someone in the movie say something to Juliet along the lines of “you’ll always be nothing” or something like that? That could explain the symbolism of people ignoring her body. And it’s also the most satisfying ending. Juliet is unlikeable, greedy, jealous, and lacks self awareness. It’s satisfying knowing that she ultimately failed in trying to upstage her sister. Instead of living her own life and growing herself, she spent every second trying to beat her twin. But you can’t beat somebody at being them.
@lucasblue203 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! It's always comforting to see someone who interpreted the film similarly to me so i know I'm not crazy haha (but of course i also love the variety of opinions in the comments, super fascinating). I really love how you positioned our preferred ending as the most morally and emotionally satisfying. You often do pay a price for such relentless and vindictive choices. I really love your take and your explanation! It really made me think about my theory more. Thank you so much for your input and thank you so much for watching!!
@Marioinformer4 Жыл бұрын
I would hard body disagree. I felt it was more on the line with movies like Blackswan, Whiplash, where its the artists obsession to sacrifice themselves for their muse. I do think the ending was a metaphor for what Vi said at the end, Succeed or fail, nothing changes. Which is why both scenes happen at the same time to make you wonder whether she carried out the performance, or left and died with her spirit. However, although that is an appealing way to look at it, seeing all the pain shes cause others, while looking at what shes sacrificed in order to be the great, its ideal to leave it in Schrodinger's box. I think she surpassed all expectations and nailed the concerto. Why? Because she did her sacrifice, she is removing herself from happiness, life, love, and acceptance in order to progress with her art. Its alluded many times that she was sacrificing everything since she was young, and despite what any of her teachers tell her about her capabilities, and likelihood to not make it far in life, she will surpass because her spirit is the only thing she needs. I think it was a great ending, but I dont feel it was all that confusing, her sister smiling was maybe a projection of what she wanted to feel, maybe she sacrificed all this for approval, and is envisioning she gets it from her sister (who we know has always had a better standing than her, and the fact no one is looking at her dead body on the school sculpture is more a representation of how isolated she became in order to make the ultimate sacrifice for her school (body on school scultpure, represents sacrifice to music for the schools behalf, and for her own behalf) Sorry I rambled, I just really loved the ending.
@jacobshank93622 жыл бұрын
This movie is full of symbolism and imagery! Truly a good movie. I believe the ending had numerous meanings. My take at the end-when she was lying there dying-with nobody noticing, was like Cast mentioned at the diner: as a musician (classical or not), you can give your whole life, dedicate it to music, “sell your soul” (figuratively or literally) and not even be noticed. As she’s dying, she is finally getting what she wanted, greatness. I believe that can have biblical ties as desire is the devil within you. “She has something inside her”. She was both pregnant (morning sickness puking or perhaps just anxiety puking), had talent within her (Cast scene had two meanings), and was a literal and figurative sacrifice (Sacrificer virgin to devil vibes)-the scene where she’s looking down the halfway with the shot on her eyes makes it look like her pupils are squarish, like a goat (often used in satanic references). She perhaps had the devil within her womb. Although I believe she died, it contradicts my thoughts on every other scene where the “light” was involved, she was dreaming; all except for one, the scene where she was in the cave and saw the morning star. And her sister fell, her “fall from grace”. As she perhaps was on a similar path as Lucifer and her twin sister Juliet. Twin themes. One falls, one rises. All in all, a great movie that provokes thought. The imagery and twin thematic shots were so good-lots of mirrors throughout film which ties into Lucifer obsessing over himself

*@Lucas Blue* Thank you for your insights. You picked up a lot of things in the movie i didn't. I just saw Nocturne a couple nights ago. I think it spoke to me on a personal level because when i was younger, i was Juliet. I never went so far to make that deal with the Devil -that was a line that while often tempted, i resisted crossing. I know what it is like to be that one who wants to be a musician more than life itself, and yet you always see yourself behind the curve of your peers; many of whom are people you dearly love. Yet in spite of your affection for them, your jealousy makes you resentful, destroys relationships, leaves you self-loathing and wanting to die. After i had finally smashed enough vintage instruments in my self-hatred (yes I dearly wish i could take that back!) i finally reached that moment of peace where i decided i wasn't going to trade my soul for music. My friends and family were the ones i needed to nurture. I never became a great musician, but i have been much happier for giving up that struggle. And the gift i was granted for making that choice instead of the other is that i can still play music, accepting whatever level i can play it -and happily enjoy it! :) On that note, maybe this movie was not as appealing to non-musicians, but for me, it was the best horror movie i have seen in many years! I related to it. I loved it!

People are overthinking the ending, when she draw the 6th page, Juliet draw herself sacrificing to satan, when Juliet came on stage she got a panic attack, which she had in the past aswell according to her sister V, Juliet is a loner aswell and not ok in her mind kind of psychosis eventually when she jumped, and while she is dying, Juliet just imagining her playing and was succesfully a star, then she smiles and dies while imagining her succes at stage. Now no one is seeing her on the statue, it just states that you will be forgotten really fast in life, especially suicide people

I feel like it was greed that led Juliet to going as far as selling her soul. She envied her sister V, and how things came so effortlessly to her. Juliet wanted to be seen, heard, and loved the way her sister was, and in order to do that she felt the need to “prove” herself. I believe she jumped off the building and her seeing the light before jumping was her losing her soul as she’s falling. There’s a man(devil) playing the piano as this is happening. When Juliet had seen herself on stage holding the flowers, she looks at herself(devil) with a sadistic smile. When she comes back to “reality” its really just her in her fantasy that she sacrificed for. It’s her external hell, and as the students are walking by her dead body nobody notices her as before. When she’s smiling while dying its her seeing everyone clap for her.
@lucasblue203 жыл бұрын

When something happens in a movie scene, 1. something happens to the character, but also 2. the storyteller is doing something. We often see movie strictly from the characters point of view, but not the storyteller's. If "no ending" is common, the only reason 2 endings is not accepted is bc we value the character's storyline more than what the storyteller have to say.

i think the scene where she makes the first audition while she is playing the vivian song in the piano (min. 26:30) xplains the end, she is in the balcony teather sad watching herself proud for the ovation, its like her soul watching the body, so this secene means her body got the succes she wanted but the soul was given.

She does not die and it is easy to explain: if nobody sees her bloody on the statue, despite the fact that several people pass in front of her it is because: A- she dies and all the people who pass by are hallucinating, they don't see her dead, nobody screams and nobody calls 911. B- she does not die and what dies is her fear of success, her fears in a symbolism and that is why the people who pass by do not see anything. >>>>Option B is logic
@rickmister013 жыл бұрын
While did enjoy the break down, see all the research. It was great, I tend to disagree. I feel like she was alive in the end and the sacrifice she had to make was playing the piece and ending her sister “career”. I reason I think this is it doesn’t make sense to kill ourself after a deal with the devil, the first girl wrote something on the wall and I think it may have the death isn’t real. Which I take to mean the sacrifice isn’t necessarily suicide. The death could be a symbolic of her soul dying since it belong to the devil now.
@lucasblue203 жыл бұрын
I love your theory, yes the ending could mean that she is simply sacrificing her soul for greater success, I’ve actually heard that theory from quite a few people, that’s a cool way to look at it, when making this video I realized that there is enough reasoning for either side that you think is real as a viewer, and I think that’s what the director wanted, thank you for this sweet interpretation and thank you for watching!!

I don't see the end the same way. For me, Moira saw the 6th step was sacrifice and she took it litterally. She got scared (she tore the last page of the notebook) and she committed suicide before the show because she was too scared, she wasn't willing to go through the whole process and face the last step. On the other hand, Juliette comes on stage. I think the real end is that she performs because we also had the teacher tell him previously that when a musician is going on stage, it's like a sacrifice. So inside herself she feels like dying from this sacrifice but she made it and her dead body/soul is smiling from the relief, she went through the path. Also, I think we see her dead body on the school's statue because this school is sacrificing the students in the sense that they have to go through these steps to become great musicians. Also it resonates with the sentences we have on the movie jacket the great (Moira) vs the mad ones/people who are really determined to achieve their goals (Juliette) (Sorry for my english, it's not my first language)

Thank you so much for the suggestions!!
