The way she softens her voice when she says "here" is so metaphoric. Because it like a metaphor for how the world thinks women aren't allowed to get angry and mad, but wants us all to be sweet good girls. That are nice to everyone and only smile.

I almost had a heart attack from sheer joy when NB broke out into this song at Coachella this weekend, I was screaming the lyrics so loud and jumping up and down that I wanted to cry. What an AH-MAZING set they pulled off, the entire group really giving 100% and really leaving it all out there on the stage! Honestly, I didn't know I could still feel this kind of exhilaration in my 50s. The No Doubt version of Gwen Stefani channels the spirit animal in me to come roaring forth. Honestly, they all performed so well and really gave it their all, but nothing blew me away more than Stefani's gorgeous and powerful vocals. If you've been to Coachella before, you know that dust and wind can be fierce and Coachella Cough is definitely a thing. I don't know how she pulled this off. She must have flow in last minute because she sure was NOT breathing all the find dust from the polo grounds, that's for sure. Sparkling vocal performance!

LYRICS!! Take this pink ribbon off my eyes I'm exposed and it's no big surprise Don't you think I know exactly where I stand? This world is forcing me to hold your hand 'Cause I'm just a girl, oh, little old me Well, don't let me out of your sight Oh, I'm just a girl, all pretty and petite So don't let me have any rights Oh, I've had it up to here The moment that I step outside So many reasons for me to run and hide I can't do the little things I hold so dear 'Cause it's all those little things that I fear 'Cause I'm just a girl, I'd rather not be 'Cause they won't let me drive late at night Oh, I'm just a girl, guess I'm some kind of freak 'Cause they all sit and stare with their eyes Oh, I'm just a girl, take a good look at me Just your typical prototype Oh, I've had it up to here Oh, am I making myself clear? I'm just a girl I'm just a girl in the world That's all that you'll let me be Oh, I'm just a girl, living in captivity Your rule of thumb makes me worrisome Oh, I'm just a girl, what's my destiny? What I've succumbed to is making me numb Oh, I'm just a girl, my apologies What I've become is so burdensome Oh, I'm just a girl, lucky me Twiddle-dum, there's no comparison Oh, I've had it up to Oh, I've had it up to Oh, I've had it up to here

Gwen Stefani was just a teenager when No Doubt got rolling. In 1992 they signed a record deal and released an album with Interscope Records but due to poor album sales, the label cancelled plans for additional albums. Undeterred, the band independently released a second album which impressed Interscope Records enough that they suffered FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). The label resigned the band to release their 3rd album in 1995 which became "Tragic Kingdom". "Just A Girl" was the song that broke the band into mass consciousness and its the first song that Gwen solely wrote the lyrics for. It's sarcastic tone and a nod towards an independent attitude for women has been seen as a statement for feminism but in reality, Stefani simply wrote the song in reference to a time when she got in trouble with her parents for sneaking out of the house. The video featuring a cute and vibrant Gwen, went into heavy rotation on MTV after the single was released... and the rest, as they say, is history.

The second album The Beacon street collection was a fuck you to interscope. They where never dropped from interscope. Turned over to TRAUMA in 95 then that subdivision of interscope closed then Just a girl was off the 3rd album Tragic Kingdom. I could keep going and going

I bought the album when it came out in 95’, when I was 25 & because of this song in particular, and was totally blown away, from the beginning till the end. I didn’t know much about “No doubt” previously, as they weren’t known really well here in Australia, so I didn’t have their earlier albums, but this album cemented it for me. Not really , these days ''men'' are failling over themselves to prove how progressive they are , so 'you' as a woman can't really be sure if you got a position on merit. Back in the 90s if a woman had what was seen as a mans role in life , you knew it was because she had mad skills that paid the bills*. That was my experience with the first few bosses I had ( women who were shit-hot at their jobs ) *Thatcher

Lisa Johnson I just read that she was inspired to write this song after an incident where her father got mad at her for driving by herself late at night. It's definitely a feminist anthem about women being independent and not needing to be "protected" all the time. She said about this song; “ I wrote that because my dad got mad at me for going to Tony’s house and driving home late at night. I mean, c'mon, I’m, like, going on 30 here! " -Gwen Stefani

My mom used to play this all the time, and at one point when I asked why, and she said that after I was born, when she was coming home from the hospital, my aunt had called the radio station in the town we lived in and said to play this, but dedicate it to my mom. so about 10 minutes later after all the ads and radio shit there was a little announcement. "Just got a call and wanted to congratulate **insert my moms name** on her newborn baby girl! This ones for you, huge respect to you and all the moms out there" and this song followed it. Brought tears to my dads eyes. Now, 13 years later, this is one of my favorite songs, and my mom still cries a little when she hears this. Thank you mom, you have good music taste :)

You're the only one in the comment section that puts your finger on the key phrases in the lyrics. Gwen has turned herself into a fraud, and the song shows how she feels about it. Gwen has painted a prettier and more sexually attractive face on top of her real face, using a secret female seduction technique called "makeup". She is taking full advantage of the power of sexual manipulation that is available to her as a girl, and has in fact become a big star for it, with the entire world fawning over her and showering her with attention. The song is about how she hates what she has become (a big fat lie!), and she tells us straight up she has had it up to her fake eyebrows. This is probably the most feminist song in existence, since it perfectly sums up the feminist desire to have the cookie and eat it too. Gwen wants to be taken seriously as a man is taken seriously, but she ALSO wants flutter her fake eyelashes and harvest money and attention from all the simps. She chooses to be "just a girl" to reap all the rewards that come from it, then she turns around and blames the world (but at least she seems to have self awareness about her own behavior). This is apparently super relatable to all the women commenting here, so I'm assuming they're all doing the same thing (abusing the sexual power that comes with being a girl, then playing victim when being treated as a sex object), albeit not all women do this as successfully as Gwen. She is a very gifted woman after all.
