Remembering Noel Dexter
Pianistic Projections by Dr. George Roberts
Arrangements of his compositions ‘The Lord is my Shepherd’ and ‘The Right Hand of God’.
DEX CYAN DIE!
In my musical life, Dex, as we called him, was an inspiration, mentor, critic, promoter, and friend. He sensitized me to the depth, value and beauty of Caribbean Choral music. His sterling work helped to legitimize and humanize that genre and in so doing advanced the cause of Caribbean people. His influence has been epic and he has inspired large numbers of musicians and music lovers with his creations. Thus he will always live on.
My piano remembrance is in three sections. It starts with a light mento-ish rendering of his 'The Lord is my Shepherd', reflecting the life of the easy-going fellow Sagittarian that I knew. This then takes a somber turn in a minor key, acknowledging the fact that his earthly corporeal sojourn is now over.
In the final section one of his most famous hymns, 'The right hand of God' emerges Phoenix-like from the distance to a climax in a distinctly Caribbean style, and ends with the triumphant coda from 'Shepherd ' proclaiming 'And I shall dwell in His house for evermore!' Yes, his work and the music it spawned will always be with us.
