Gohan just wanted to stop fighting and live at peace but he couldn't, he was sick of the Androids and a life of fighting for survival and he could have given up but kept fighting because there was no guarantee Trunks would manage to do it, so Gohan realized something about himself, beating the Androids, if he didn't do it, who would? Mind you, Gohan only put his hopes on Trunks when he was dying. He intended to finish the job himself or with Trunks later but he realized he couldn't anymore in his last moments. He really didn't want Trunks to go through the same hell he went through... But it turned out to be the better outcome. So his final wish wasn't in vain.

Tfs advice aside, even if he did dodge he lacked the power output to actually damage them. Even if he perfectly dodges every attack in the beginning, eventually he’ll get tired and the Androids won’t. One of the rare times TFS’ Piccolo’s advice doesn’t always save you.
