E30 Windshield Replacement

Here is a video on how to replace the windshield on a BMW E30. The old one had a tiny chip that turned into a big crack over time and it had to be right in front of the driver seat, of course. It was very annoying to drive like that for months but I finally took care of it.

I would’ve checked for rust under that windshield seal, even if this is a Florida car. The rubber seal, which adheres to a metal lip, tends to shrink and allow water to accumulate around the bottom corners, which causes rust.

True, I should have. I guess everything was happening so fast that it didnt cross my mind. I do plan to get this car painted at some point in the future so I will have another opportunity to inspect for rust.

Hey did you get the convertible glass? I’m pricing mine out and the convertible glass is 4x more expensive then the regular coupe and I’ve read only it fits the same

The guy who did it sourced the glass on his own, so I couldnt tell you where to buy it. Shouldnt be hard to find though.

Isn't it often necessary to attache some kind of glue? there wasn't used any i want to replace the windshield of a nissan micra with a friend of mine and wonder whether we can just spare that step

That really depends on the car. BMW only used pressure and the rubber seals on these E30s from the 1980's, no glue. Most modern cars do require some type of adhesive though.

@@NoGaragE30 3M 08509 is the best thing to put between the car frame and the rubber and then put the strip in right after to let it settle.

I dont have chrome trim on my windshield. Not sure what you are referring to.

@@NoGaragE30 inside the rubber trim around the windshield there's a 1/4in chrome moulding.

@@michaeljam2132 As you can see in the video, both the weatherstrip and decorative strip are black on my car. Some cars do have the decorative strip in chrome, but not mine. I wanted it black and it was in good condition so no need to replace it.

Is your rearview mirror mounted via suction cup? Where did you get it from?

That is the ELUTO Rear View Mirror from Amazon. Paid $14 for it and it works great.
