As someone with ASD, thank you for speaking up. The r-word is a slur that most people do not recognize. I understand that context matters, and not every instance of the r-word is bad. But if you explain to people why it hurts you, and they refuse to listen and continue saying it around you, than it becomes a problem. The r-word is not different than any other slur, and should not be treated any different. Do not listen to the haters here who do not understand. You're doing great. Stay strong, and stay awesome!

@@dante6055 like I said, not all instances of the word are bad. Not all black people mind their non AA friends using the n-word when it's not meant to be insulting. If you and your friends use with it each other and feel comfortable, there's no problem. The issue is that not every neurodivergent person is the same. I’m neurodiverse and fairly lax when it comes to this terminology when the appropriate definition is used. Sometimes it baffles me how I made it 33 years on this earth without using that word within earshot of anyone who wasn’t my family (or quoting song lyrics/TV shows in the shower). Yet, going through the comments you’d swear it was the Macarena, like an embarrassing fad that everyone took part in but won’t admit it. I don’t think a lot of people understand the history and baggage that word carries. It's "I miss the days when neuro/racially/sexually diverse people were locked up". Use that word till your heart’s content, but all y’all acting like it’s so difficult to not say it are telling on yourselves. Just STOP… it’s embarrassing. TLDR; “ending” the word is more about recognising that it reflects dated and archaic attitudes that society is trying to leave behind. I'm not going back and forth over it. Argue with the wall.

@@notyou8554 and now imagine if you or a loved one who is extremely close to you is neurodivergent. How would it make them feel and how it would it make you feel to hear that word used in such a way. Ignoring the problem is part of the problem. We should all care for each other and love each other (in the appropriate way of course). I know we do not live in a perfect world, but together we could at least change to make it a bit nicer for everyone. You should also think when you use this word, as people who are so close to ending it after a lifetime of bullying and/or other traumatic events. A simple word could push someone over that line and make them do horrible things to themselves. If you had an emotion, then being the last reason that someone killed themselves would not be the nicest feeling In the world. And someone’s life could have been prolonged even further just by you not using a word for a joke among friends. I know this comment is a bit lectureey, and I’m no one to tell you how to live your life. But please don’t use this word, even as a joke, it’s still not nice and will cause problems down the line.

I find the word offensive myself because I have autism. They used to be medical terms, but they are still wrong in my opinion and it's a way for people to medically justify believing that disabled people including people with all different kinds of physical and mental disabilities are mentally inferior. People also used to medically justify the belief that black people are inferior and degenerate. In real life, people usually base their judgement and discrimination on their intuition and notions about who looks/seems "retarded" to them and they're always wrong in my opinion and the opinion of every person I've heard who has been like seriously told that they are "mentally challenged", "retarded", etc.

Not the people here literally saying it isn't bad or that they can still say it. No, you can't. Theres a history behind the R-word and it has hurted us people in the disabled and neurodivergent community for centuries. It is still a derogatory word, because it's describing a persons intellect or certain mannerism in a derogatory and hateful way. There is no right way to say it, just with many other derogatory words. Remember this : Neurodivergent and Disabled people can say the R-word. Gay men and enby people can say the F slur. Lesbian women and enby people can say the D slur. Black people can say the N word. Trans and nonbinary people can say the T slur. Anyone who isn't part of these, cannot say it. Straight, Cis, White, Neurotypical, abled bodied please do not insert yourself into our community and try to reclaim a word that isn't yours. You didn't suffer and experience discrimination or oppression for the way you are/something you cannot change or something you were born with. And do not silence our voices and the voices of minorities and people facing daily oppression. simple : SHUT UP AND LISTEN.

Not disabled, but i am neurodivergent and the R-word hurts me too. I do not like the word, i used to accept people saying it because i didn't know how bad it was and i wasnt diagnosed with autism yet. The r-word makes my down syndrome sister cry every time she hears it. People have turned it into a weapon to discriminate against her. They've told her "r-words shouldn't go to school, they're too stupid to learn anything." right to my sister's face in front of me. A word she should have embraced and been proud of is now being used in place of the word, "stupid." Its completely ruined her self esteem and has made her feel like she is, "broken" because she doesn't fit the definition of a "normal person." So I want to make this really clear, it is not EVER okay to use the word as a slur and anyone who tells you otherwise I highly suggest you to show them this comment.

The r-word discriminates against a minority group of people. Its no different than how the n-word discriminates. I think its insane how this word can just be said just for good ol' funzies and not be called out for. Like it or not the word has been turned into a slur. And using it as a slur is what this video is referring to and trying to discourage. This is coming from an older sister of a down syndrome sibling who would come home crying because people turned something she was proud to be into a genuine insult. She genuinely believed that she was a bad person and that she was broken. There is no excuse to use this word as a slur, especially when there are many better alternatives to say instead.

I hear kids in my school use the R word on a regular basis, but what bugs me more is the fact that they don't even include it as a bad word. If there's one thing more disgusting than this awful word, it's how everyone still continues to use it as if it's not then plays the victim whenever they rightfully get called out on it rather than swallow their pride and apologize for their despicable behavior. Many times I've called others out for using this awful slur and I have yet to hear something around the lines of "Oh, I'm so sorry. I didn't realize how disrespectful using that slur was. Did you know some neurodivergents actually committed suicide all because someone was insensitive enough to throw that slur around like it's no big deal? Even though nobody was directly calling them that, it still triggered some massive PTSD the exact same manner as how sounds resembling gunfire do the same to war vets, which drove those poor neurodivergents to suicide all over again, and succeeded.
