i will come to your bar on regualy basis. hopefully you have coors original on tap. if you do, youll kno thats what im having right off the bat. ill have a seat at the bar, give you a smile and a nod and wait for you to come my way. i take a look at the pool table(s) and see if theres a spot. it has been a rough night.. just want to listen to some good music, sink some balls, and.. just like that, i hear in a calm and familiar voice, "rough night?" i turn back around to find a perfectly poured coors in a frosty mug. i take a second to reply, soley thinking about your night, and what and who youve had to deal with.. and humbly say "not anymore"🙂🍻

I've been a professional and private bartender here in Los Angeles for 40 years. This music is how I feel when I'm working late at night in Hollywood. If there's ever a place to gain experience and knowledge gathering intel while preparing a well-made cocktail for various guests from all over the world, it's right here in the biggest small town in America.

The measured beat of my footsteps echoed in the underpass, in time with the legato rhythm of the falling rain. Thoughts of her drifted through my mind as they wafted along, with the exhaled smoke from my cigarette, into the darkness of the shadowed night . . . . .

Names of old acquaintances formed and dissolved in the tendrils of the fog that wrapped the city in a wet woolen blanket. It was my city, but I didn't have the deed...it was however my scene, and I have more receipts for cocktails and comeuppance than any gumshoe with a good lead and a steady hand ought to have in the autumn of his life. But it didn't stop the rain from whispering into my ear "one more case, this could be the big one...'

It was July 15th, 1956. City of Angels. A real scorcher outside. Even the shade had a temperature of 100 degrees. The fans cooling down my office weren’t nearly enough. The ice in my water glass were completely melted. Then in walked the prettiest dame I had ever seen. Bleach blonde hair, blue eyes that cut through you like a knife. Legs for days. It was at that moment I realized trouble just walked through my door, but didn’t realize just how much those blue eyes had seen.

"It was another dreary night in the city that never sleeps, where the rain falls like the tears of a thousand lost souls. The kind of night that wraps around you like a damp shroud, reminding you that some stains never wash away. My name's Jack Marlowe. I used to be a cop, but that was a lifetime ago. Now, I scrape by as a private eye, digging through the dirt and grime of this city, hoping to find a glimmer of truth. Most days, it's a thankless job, but every now and then, a case lands on my desk that sets the old gears turning, a case that reminds me why I started doing this in the first place. Tonight felt different. The air was thick with more than just rain. It was heavy with something else-something dangerous, something that had the scent of trouble all over it."

It was a clouded late afternoon on Dwell Street. People of all social classes were hurrying, rushing home holding on to the little bit of patience and politeness they had left after a long day of pretending to be whatever society expects them to be. The caffeïne from their morning coffee would run out soon, but by that time they would already be home, where they could finally embrace to their true identities. That's when my day starts. I don't drink coffee.. I used to be like anyone else on Dwell street until I started my career as a detective. Being nosy always brought me in trouble as a kid but tonight it was going to save a life. I had my eyes fixed on a spooky apartment from across the street. The owner who was short and fat left the building wearing a tall coat in which he hid his hands, suddenly he adjusted his glasses while inspecting his environment which betrayed what looked like a splash of blood on his fingers. Hasty he began to walk away without any type of luggage which meant he would be back soon. If I want to investigate this place I have to do it quick. I poured a shot of whisky down my throat for the lack of caffeïne and ran down the steps when I saw her.....

The rain drummed down in relentless sheets, each drop hammering out a rhythm that only I seemed to hear. The case was closed, sure, but it left a sour taste in my mouth-the kind that whiskey and a dark room might dull but never erase. I lit a cigarette, watching the smoke curl into the wet night air, as filthy as the city that made it. I’d seen it all in that backroom-more blood, more betrayal than any man’s built to carry. Some things, once you lay eyes on ’em, they follow you, cling to you like the stench of death in the gutters. I pulled my collar up, heading for the one place left that might make it right, or at least let me forget for a while. Tonight, it was me and the finest whiskey they had-top shelf, smooth, strong. If I was lucky, by the time the bottle hit empty, the memories would be as hazy as the smoke around me.

....As I was sitting at the bar going on my 4 or 5th whiskey, listening to some nice soft jazz being played in the dark bar and as always thinking back to the one I let slip away in my delicious booze-induced fog... Then I heard the front door swing open and saw a woman’s figure in a raincoat, stepping into the dark bar and removing her rain soaked hat, letting loose her long blond hair as if slow motion. She looked around the room...and what seemed to focus on me as she started walking my way. I'd been a gumshoe for decades, seen it all, done it all. But something about this woman, this blonde woman with her haunting eyes and the way she walked, drew me in. As she approached, I caught a whiff of her perfume, a scent that was both intoxicating and mysterious, a scent that seemed to promise danger and intrigue....

"There I was, alone at that old and dirty diner, going for a late meal or an early breakfast, like it mattered at all. Coffe was cold and bitter just like my ex-wife, while toasts were crumbing worse than my bank account and bacon was past its expiration date, same as my dreams. My innards complained that cheap omelette was a bad decision. Adding refried beans was an even worse one. I hurried to the bathroom like a rat up a drainpipe. The "Sorry out of order" sign stopped me deader than a fly in the web. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. Just suck it up, Buster. Such is life."

It was a Thursday like no other. The routine I’ve built up is crumbling. The case has leads that lead nowhere dead ends deader than my cat. You think you found a lead, though small, that’ll lead somewhere, but alas, its a cold trail. If this case doesn’t get solved soon, this city won’t be able to be built back up, and that’s what I fear the black rose is going for, to destroy and the empire to build a new one upon its ashes.

The fifth bottle of bourbon weighed heavily in my system, pleading for more, while my wallet was on life support. I sat there, methodically consuming one pack after another. Somehow, she found me-4 foot 2 with a heart of bronze -and a form that captivated. It was as if she were a trash bag filled with peach tea, exuding warmth on a December night. I adored her, all 400 pounds of her. As I stood, momentarily immobilized by her presence, she stopped, dropped and rolled toward me with a grace. She took my breath away. My heart raced, bursting with vigor, like a sledgehammer crushing a grape. Overwhelmed with excitement, I found myself, all 7 foot 2 of me, on one knee before her, ring in hand. I held it in front of her glass eye-the one without the patch-she lit up like a Christmas tree…

Our romance started with the purest form of bio electrochemical reactions to each other's natural smell and the way we could just be, telling each other our most dark shame and not feel afraid of being alone or judged, and how i knew when I met you in 92 that we would be happy together, and 18 yrs later, January 2010, you walked up to me, don't i know you from somewhere? And I, mouth agape, said Hi Anna vickaryous... I persued you after that day, then on a warm, early spring day, I played trumpet, softly, outside and across the street from your apartment, you started recording a small bunny watching and listening intently to me play. And you said, I should maybe give him a chance... And when you died 2 years ago, I lost everything that I ever truly loved. 😢
