Saw him in 1970 at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. Dark and cozy, the club was the perfect environment to enjoy his improvisations.

재즈는 별빛이 차오른 클래식에 유성우를 가득 담은 편지와 다름없다. 그 편지엔 ‘돌발성은 오선지에 쓰인 아름다운 음표들의 배열임에 지나지 않는다.’라고 써있다. 갑작스레 떨어진 유성우는 음표들의 배열 사이에 떨어져 찬란하게 변주한다. 분명 규칙사이에서 불규칙을 연주하는 것일테다. 재즈는 그저 밤하늘 가득히 흘러가는 오선지의 은하수와 다름없이, 일상의 불규칙 또한 아름다운 것임을 알려주기 위함이 아닐까. 내가 재즈에 빠진 이유도 결국, 일상에서 불규칙을 찾기 위함에 지나지않기 때문일테다.

오랜만에 올라온 빌 에반스의 플레이리스트를 보게되어 반갑습니다. 다른 재즈/뉴에이지 곡들에 비해, 유독 빌 에반스의 곡은 묘한 공백이 많아서 그런지, 맘편하게, 저어~기 한 서너발자욱 떨어진 곳에 애매한 볼륨으로 틀어둔 채 잊어버린 스피커에서 흘러나오는 음악처럼, 밟히지 않으면서도 공간을 채워주는 듯한 음색이 너무 좋습니다. ㅎㅎ

날이 좋은 일요일 오후 카페에 앉아 음악을 들으며 작년 여름의 일기를 꺼내보았다. 나를 규정하는, 그리고 내가 지향하는 몇 안되는 키워드 중 하나가 취약함이다. 내가 취약함을 사랑하는 이유는, 예민하기 위해서는 연약해야하기 때문이다. 세상의 모진 공격을 방어하기 위해 단단하게 쌓아올린 철갑옷을 두르고서는 타인과 닿을 수 없다. 모든 걸 내어줄 정도로 취약할 때, 연약할 때, 그제서야 우리는 '겨우' 타인과/사회에 닿을 수 있다. 연약함/취약함(vulnerability)이야말로 타인과 닿을 수 있는 능력의 원천이다. 재즈 역시 마찬가지다.즉흥연주를 하기 위해선 늘 바깥을 향해 귀를 열어두어야 한다. 작 은 변화마저도 예민하게 포착해 기민히 대처해야한다. 같은 스코어라도 매 공연이 다른 이유다. 일상화 - 식민화 - 되어보이는 우리의 생활세계, 그 철옹성 같은 쇠우리 안에서 '의미'를 만들어가는 것. 타인과의 소통을 통해 매일 같지만 다른 즉흥연주를 하며 의미를 부여하는 것. 그게 삶이고 또 재즈다.
