Noise cancelling earplugs: which are best?

Noise cancelling earplugs reduce volume in crowded places, but can you still have a conversation? Is that even possible?
For many autistic people, sensory overload is the most distressing part of our condition, with noisy environments being more likely to send us into shutdown (or meltdown).
A good pair of noise reducing earplugs will greatly improve our (and other noise sensitive people's) quality of life, so I look at 4 types to see which I like the most for everyday use.

100% I was deaf recently due to earwax and I don't think I've ever been so calm. I couldn't hear my upstairs neighbour's loud footsteps, his dog stomping about or him banging doors shut. The only downer was I couldn't listen to the radio in bed - I could watch TV/listen to music with headphones turned up as loud as needed, but as I wear headphones (and usually earplugs too) constantly anyway it wasn't an issue - but other than my audio experience wasn't wonderful it was acceptable- it was bliss. I almost didn't want to get them syringed out.

Not autistic but I do have ADHD. I’ve always been very sensitive to sounds and today I got a sensory overload at school and almost snapped at my teacher and classmates and got aggressive because everything became too much. It’s been a long time coming, and I finally caved in. Thanks for this video! I don’t want earplugs for concerts or sleeping, just to live my daily life in a more manageable way. Thanks for sharing this! I’m glad I found someone neurodivergent to give me what I was looking for.

Thank you thank you. Life with wearing earplugs 24 hours a day every day has caused some ear and sinus health problems after 20 years. Hi, did you find earplugs that are working for you? I have a problem with majority of plugs I tried (I haven't try Loops or Vibes as they are expensive but I'm looking into it now) and all that I tried make my ears pain after short time. I desperately need two types of earplugs: 1 - for calming down background noise just so I could handle conversations in crowded places like restaurants, and 2 - an earplug that would cancel most of the noises and help me sleep. Both have to be comfortable or my ears start hurt and I have to remove them.

I have Loops, and I agree on how disconcerting your own voice amplification is. The other issue I found is that to hear the person I'm speaking to I had to directly face them, if they were next to me I couldn't hear them as well, which was kind of frustrating and made me feel more overwhelmed because I had to keep whipping my head around. I do think they'll be good with live music, but yeah, might have to try vibes!

I have a pair of vibes and have been using them every weekday for nearly a year now at work. I work as a welder/fabricator in a small factory so it's a very noisy environment, they are the best I've ever used. I also have audio processing problems as well and life is a lot easier using thees than the standard foam ones that work provides. They definitely let through the finer more nuanced sounds and block out the loud ones. Also the silicon bits detach so you can wash them!

The best earplugs I used were the industrial foam ones. There is a method to putting them in: roll them up small, pull your earlobe down and put in. The plug then expands to fill the ear canal nicely. I worked in the entertainment industry for years, having earplugs was great. Even when I didn't need them for hearing protection the cut down high frequency enabled me to understand conversations much better and feel more relaxed.

I work at a call center, and "manage" most of the time, but when the background noise rises enough I can't distinguish between the background and what I am supposed to be listening to with the headphones. I'm not sure if anyone else has experienced this but I found the loop quiet seems to help me slightly with audio processing disorder (self diagnosed) and as a parent. I often found that when my 2 young kids meltdown and are both screaming the fact that I could hear both myself think and speak softly, is extremely beneficial. For reference I am autistic (diagnosed) and also don't like the sound of my voice but the loop quiet did help me able to speak as someone reasonably sound sensitive. I did find after wearing these for several hours straight in a quiet-ish home environment that it was a relief to remove them so these are best for when noise is loud and swap out for other ear plugs that have much reduced self volume when in less noisy situations. I found the quiets do bring close external noises down to what I'd consider a 'normal' volume level and have had a normal conversation with people, and distant/quiet noises (except cicadas!) are heavily reduced. But that's just my own experience and I did have to work with headphones echoing my voice (which is horrible) so I might be less bothered by earplugs raising my voice volume because of that past job. With APD I did find it slightly easier to hear what the teacher was saying in a room full of kids speaking every where at once as immediately compared to my unplugged ears. Hope that helps.

@@alartlart highly recommend the loop quiet for that exact reason! I often swap to these in loud situations or if the kids start to escalate. Otherwise I tend to wear Calmers during quiet times which are way over priced and fall out easy but take the edge off and don't raise your volume, I would imagine the Vibes would be a much better option to the Calmers and half the price.

Ah, just looking at that sleeping kitty calms me down so much. Thanks for the reviews. The Vibes sound perfect - I would like something to drown out the worst noise but still be able to be part of my surroundings (aka 5 and 7 year old boys................................!)

I have those Alpine and are THE BEST. Tiny ears and picky princess here as well, hahaha. Best part of that, is the capsule that you can attach to your keyring or whatever... Those are my best recommendation, along with Fender Musician Ear Plugs. Pretty cheap and effective. Maybe those ones cancel more noise without making your voice sound weird, but I lost them and now I always go with Alpine. I started used them on rehearsal room as a musician, and one day I had the amazing idea of using them on the streets as well and my sensory problems reduced 90% I'd say.

I got myself custom made earplugs with a 22 db filter and it's the best investment i made they reduce a lot of background noice. Sound like you are under water sound and they are so comfortable .

I bought some loops a few months ago. I wore them once around the house...they amplified my voice and I haven't worn them since. Funnily enough I bought some noise canceling headphones a couple of days ago and they are perfect for me for supermarkets and at home. They are going to be an absolute life saver for bus trips and the noisey areas at uni. Oh and the horrifying clapping at theatre shows. The big downside is I wouldn't want to wear them in a lot of other circumstances due to people thinking I was rude. Also, love your videos :)

I use these plugs on lectures, in car, shopping grocery, everywhere. I have also found that if you want to block almost every sound, just put on musician plugs and noise cancelling headphones over them.

I have a couple of pairs of Vibe earplugs. They're essential if I go to the movies or any live performance with amplifiers, and even noisy restaurants -- when the pandemic goes away and we can do those things again. I also have Calmer earplugs by Flare -- these are silicon ear inserts with a channel through them that reduce the higher frequencies but don't dampen the overall sound. They're tiny, comfortable, and I often forget I'm wearing them. What I'd really like to find, though, is a pair of affordable active noise-canceling earbuds designed for wearing at night. I've been using foam earplugs for years, but I think one ear canal is becoming sensitive to the foam.

I have musicians earplugs by Jam Plugs, but I prefer them at night for sleep. They're similar to the Alpine party plugs you showed. I'm not keen on using them in the day and my own voice sounds too loud. I love my ear protectors more though. I can hear more of people speaking with less background noises. My own voice isn't too loud either. They're what workmen use. They're by Ducks Unlimited and are hot pink so suit my personality, look like headphones but aren't, and I find them incredibly comfortable. I also find that with discrete earplugs, people speak softly and then think I'm ignoring them and that's a problem at work with the public and I have to hear them over the highway behind them and the noise of the vehicles they're in. But with something really obvious on like my ear protectors a lot of people speak up automatically and nobody can assume that I'm ignoring them on purpose. They also only cost my $20 Canadian. If I ever want more complete silence at home I can wear my earplugs under my ear protectors but the sound of my own breathing and voice get annoying after a while. But yeah, despite the size, I just love my pink Ducks Unlimited ear protectors. My own voice isn't loud with them and I can't hear my breathing so thats good. They just filter out enough background noise in order to hear the person speaking next to me. They're so comfy on and I like the gentle huggy feeling on my head. It makes me feel secure, so I don't mind them being less discreet. Also, strangers are less likely to engage in conversational small talk in shops like Walmart or other public places, because they assume I can't hear them, which is a great bonus with my social anxiety. 💕 And like you Sam, I feel my own noise sensitivity is getting worse as I get older.

I use Flare Calmers. They're not technically ear plugs but they alter the shape of your ear canal attenuating frequencies that might trigger stress or anxiety. I find them very comfortable and I don't need to stim as much when I use them. They are marketed for autistic and neurodivergent customers.

That was very 'infotaining' thanks :D Can you tell me, is Autistic sound sensitivity experienced as anxiety or is it irritation and eventually anger and sadness or does it depend person to person? I'm struggling with the latter with noisy housemates. As far as I know I'm not Autistic but I might be.

Does anyone else freak out when they can't hear stuff? Me and my dad both hate earphones because even the most basic cheap old-fashioned ones lockout sound more than headphones or speakers. Now that I'm learning more and more I'm realizing that we are both hyper-vigilant, and thinking maybe earplugs could make me less hyper-vigilant once I got used to it... but like to begin with it would be torture

I use a tailor-made wax mould based ones that are shaped to my ear shape and I have got them done in a professional hearing aid shop [EMTEC]. They are used for those doing gun shooting but mine is without the valves that allow talking range audio in. They are very good & comfortable for sleep and have saved my sanity. When I am not sleeping and I am in say a café I use industrial noise ear muffs [3M Peltor Optime III Earmuffs with Headband]. Very comfortable, very effective and does not require batteries. You can also slip earphone in if you want.
