I heard real silence a couple months ago, it was a surprising revelation of how long it's been since I last heard silence. Anchored out in my boat on a river, water was smooth as glass and no one around for miles. The only sounds were the occasional wind and bird chirps. This was in the middle of nowhere in Alabama.

I wonder whether noise cancelling headphones would really spare your ears, as they counter the noise by destructive interference - which in itself has some power level. Well beyond my pay grade, I suppose it's not nothing but far from dangerous levels.

Noise cancelling doesn't introduce more pressure. It counteracts external pressure with inverse phase of the same magnitude, effectively removing pressure completely (in ideal world).

I haven't done any research yet on my own noise cancelling Airpods Pro, but essentially like the comments have stated, noise cancelling is achieved either by Phase Inversion (duplicating the same exact noise or sound wave and flipping it's wave pattern to it's exact opposite), which by combining with the original signal will completing cancel each other out (think about graphically combing a sine and cosign wave). Or, by physically / mechanically blocking as much sound waves as possible from entering your ear. I'm assuming it's the latter for my Airpods Pro.

Well in America most of the noise outside comes from automobiles. That can easily be solved by getting rid of draconian zoning laws, getting rid of gigantic parking lots, letting businesses be opened near homes, making the city more walkable, and building more bike lanes. Cities are designed only for automobiles, and the most natural form of transportation is an afterthought, which is pretty insane when you think about it.
