Nice to see him finally featured in the series. Good to see he's matured into an articulate and sober man. Although I don't agree with his views on Britpop as it's the last great music scene in Britain which he was a huge part of and which he should be proud of it's good to see him honest about it. Shame on the length of the interview, it should have at least been an hour long. Anderson and his fellow Britpop luminaries should be offered the knighthood already. It's about time. ☺️

Britpop was good. Nationalistic sure but never racist or xenophobic. It lived along side black music and world music and fans mingled between both. Naseem Hamed was a big deal and the UK hip hop scene fed off of it. Just like any scene it was jumped on and marketed within 2 years to the point where it was tacky, but for about 1993-1995 it was good for music, teenagers and new bands.

It's a real shame they're trying to reinterpret Brett's past so much. Yes, the idea that "Britpop caused Brexit" is instant stupidity, when Britpop was a meaningless label in the first place for Suede. But to conflate Brett behaving androgynously back then to some present day 'gender fluidity' cause is tiresome. Suede's music was incredible for its energy and expression, it was sexual and dangerous but emotional and touching, it wasnt trying to force a contrived 'genderfluidity' or 'gay rights' agenda on you. I say that as a gay person myself. It was speaking truths about dark underbelly of society, sex, addiction, smalltime tragedies. And it was incredible rock music, both very touching and fiery. Let the music speak for itself. If anything Brett's androgynous era was just him being overtly sexual and ridiculous. It was humorous and subversive, punky. Sometimes it was incredible and angelic, other times it was just a gimmick. But either way, it makes me sad having their amazing early years conflated with the kind of identity politics we have today -which is far more concerned with blaming others for being 'cisnormative' (whetevr that means) and imposing categories and labels on people.
@cactaceous5 жыл бұрын
They did the same to Bowie and to Grace Jones etc... They didnt care. Nobody cares.
@leopardprints5 жыл бұрын
Completely agree! 'Genderfluid' is such an annoying phrase. I was a 90s teenager and was into rock and metal. I had male friends who wore dresses and makeup, just because they wanted to. Brian Molko and Marilyn Manson was definitely an influence. It's annoying as hell when they compare, what was basically just people dressing in any way they wanted, with this whole identity politics bollox.

I would disagree with his assessment of Britpop not "being allowed to happen" in this day and age. Guitar based rock has always been male dominated and that componet will never change. And there is always an ever involving "lad culture" in the UK. Basically, lads that drink, play music , and shag. I didn't find it overly misogynistic. There were female fronted bands like Sleeper, Elastica, etc. Granted, this was the minority, but nevertheless, representative. I also found Britpop celebrating British culture vs making an anti usa stance
