Hey man, thank you for another great advice, I hope this channel gets bigger! I noticed a big improvement in my mixes when I started to control the output of each plugin... but I have a (probably so silly) question about headroom. If I want to keep 5/6 of headroom in my master track... No matter if I ‘freeze’ the volume of my kick track in -10db because later if I start adding tracks like crazy, it will end up peaking, right? (Or at least surpassing those -5/6 of headroom I aiming to) Thank u again man, this channel is gold!
@NoizeLondon
@NoizeLondon 5 жыл бұрын
Ideally aim for lower (-12db) initally, then you can bring the volume of all the channels up together at the end if you need less headroom :)

I've been messing up my gain for a long time now. I'm always having to crank up the gain on the master channel at the end of my mix. Usually I end up adding like 15db to the master channel to bring it loud enough at the end.

I have seen some plugins that do this for you. Have you heard of these where there is a sender before the plugin and a receiver after? Do you see any downside of using them? It would be cool to have the level match happening in real time so that you can hear what your tweaks are while they are happening. If you do recommend them, do you know which one would be the best?

Which values should I look for when matching the volume (apart from my ears) - peak volume or RMS/LUFS? I don't really get it. Are we talking about the actual loudness level or the perceived loudness? I mean, for example - when soft clipping a sound at 0dB you're increasing the perceived loudness, but peak stays at 0dB. How would you compare that, and, would you even want to match volume in this situation?
@NoizeLondon
@NoizeLondon 5 жыл бұрын
Start with peak for now. Metered volume not perceived.

Hey London, For gain stage output does it work out the same to adjust the mix level to get the original peak level if your plugin doesn't have an output knob? What gain plugin you recommend? I'm FL user. Could you do a video of this within a mix?
@NoizeLondon
@NoizeLondon 4 жыл бұрын
I think Sonalksis do a good gain plugin to be honest but I can't remember the name. Yes it does the same to adjust the original peak level :) Sorry for the late reply - youtube has just shown . me so many comments that I didn't reply to!

Another great video.That s true ,the softsynth volume presets is too crazy high and so much effects applied.Serum and Sylenth1 the worst ,what about Massive's presets lol. Why them pump up the volume?To show the crowd the synth is powerful! It's pointless when you use synh presets and have to cut all the unecessary frequencies to fit your mix.Just time consuming.

So, let me know if I understand this correctly. The channel volume faders should all be left at the default settings. Adjust the volume of a sound by tuning the gain knob on the source (eg Simpler, some sort of VST) or maybe use Utility for this. Doing this I aim for around -12dB. And then adjusting the volumes of different sounds for the mix is done by playing with the channel's volume fader. Is this kind of the right way or did I get something wrong? Great videos by the way, really like the content so far!

Hi! One question: I saw on a video that, for Ableton users and for Gainstaging purposes, you can use an Utility and a Spectrum Analyzer to match the volume of your sounds or samples per channel without touching on the faders itself by put them between -18dB and -12dB. It is correct? To low on volume? I did it on two tracks and I get a way better results but I guess that my tracks are still low on volume in general... What do you think?

I am using the DT 770's to mix and master my tracks . I live in a flat/apartment .Therefor I can't make loud music on my monitors or any speaker . I get my mixes perfect except for the bass, which I struggle with a lot . Any advice on how I can mix the low end better with only my DT 770's please . I produce Future House/Future Bounce . (EDM)
@fldweeb5849
@fldweeb5849 5 жыл бұрын
Correlate your track on different monitors/speaker systems i.e your car and phone to see how they sound on each one. Then learn if your headphones are giving you too much or too little bass and work around it. (Another good tip is to have a reference track, and match the volume of the low end)
@overflowbeats6965
@overflowbeats6965 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah you’ll need to find some good references
@NoizeLondon
@NoizeLondon 4 жыл бұрын
For bass ideally you want speakers with at least an 8" driver or a subwoofer. I would recommend also treating your room before doing this. Cars ar good for monitoring although now always accurate.

The thing about gainstaging is it always slows down my process of music creation. Lowering faders in the mixer takes some time then I want to add stuff like eq and compression. Should gainstaging be done before the song is in process or when it’s done?

It's still an absolut mystery to me how putting a HPF/LPF on a track can result in the track being like 5 db louder... (no auto gain,no boosts)
@NoizeLondon
@NoizeLondon 4 жыл бұрын
A HPF/LPF especially when at a steep slope creates a resonance bump at the point of the cut which boosts whatever frequency is there. So... keep those slopes smooth or use shelves!
