I’m from the South Bronx. I begged My mom to put me in a day camp that bused is to the woods every day. I sorta hated it at first - I thought they were gonna take us to play land! All the bugs and nature and hiking. It was all so strange and scary. Scarier than the crackheads in my neighborhood. I went every summer from 3rd to 5th grade. We took boats out on the Hudson River (we were The Hudson River Explorers 🙂), played in grass fields, and went hiking. Looking back it really made a huge difference in my life. It opened up my world and my mind just being in nature. There are ppl in my old neighborhood who have never left. Exposure really matters.

He’s totally right. Without positive role models in close proximity to a young person life is confusing.
@kiona18162 жыл бұрын
Right!? I wish I had a successful person to talk to growing up to teach me the steps it takes to do certain things. I’m a young adult and still don’t know what I wanna do with my life. I’m so confused with my self identity and I dropped out of college. I was pursing psychology but I realized I didn’t wanna do all that schooling. I’d have to change major and I literally have no idea what I wanna do. I feel so lost. I was a good student but drugs and alcohol got ahold of me that’s why I dropped out of college. Addiction is a beast. I quit drinking and so did my dad and mom after I did they wanted to make sure I stayed sober so they got sober too. I still have substances I rely on though. I can’t seem to quit benzos. They take my anxiety away and I’ve tapered off before and relapsed 2 weeks in. I’ve been clean from alcohol for 8 months but i basically just replaced it with benzos. I just feel stuck and feel like I always need a substance to rely on idk how to be completely sober anymore. I haven’t been for like 6 years. My dad was an alcoholic all my life until 2 years ago when he quit with me. As a kid I told myself I’d never drink but as a 19 year old I tried it and fell in love. I realized quickly I have an addictive personality just like my dad and it’s genetic. His dad was an alcoholic too. My dad didn’t go to college he got lucky with his govt job they trained him on everything and he worked there for over 20 years. My mom stayed at home and was from Germany. They are bad at finances, my dad retired early cause of a brain injury so they’re not even working he’s got disability too. I just have nothing to look up to in my family circle. My aunt does real estate but I have anxiety and I’m not good at selling stuff to people. I let my anxiety hold me back so much. Even though I’m on an antidepressant and anti anxiety med it does help a lot but I still am not where I wanna be mentally. If anyone can relate to what I’m saying please feel free to comment. If you were stuck in my situation how did you get out? How did you find what you wanted to do? I’m trying to fight 2 beasts, addiction and mental illness and it’s a rough battle. I am 24 and still live with my parents. I just feel like a failure. I had so many aspirations as a teenager and I threw it down the drain when I tried substances and decided I’d rather get high than go to my college classes. I wanted to be a veterinarian but now it just seems impossible. I don’t think I’m smart enough, it was just s stupid dream I always had since I was a kid but science has always been my weakest subject. That plan isn’t gonna work. So then I decided I wanted to be a psychologist instead to help others like me but I don’t even have my life together enough to do that!!

Dope interview and a true testament to how people can be influenced but also take responsibility and rise up. Many people would have given up or given in, he was blessed to have some people nurture his drive after some poor choices. Salute
