Nokie Edwards changed my life. I idolized him. My dad bought me a 1963 Fender Jaguar. I learned to play well enough to start a band and paid my way through school. I Met my wife of 53 years through playing. Have played in churches for 30 years. No pay, but the retirement plan is out of this world! I hope to meet him one day in Heaven and thank him for the countless lives, like mine, he influenced for the better. And maybe get to pick a tune or two with him. 😊 Shalom/gw

@charlesnicholson8769 HI Charles, Great to hear from you! Thanks for writing. Nice to know there are others who share my love for the music of those times and the people who performed it. It was good, decent and well, "magic". My fondest and earliest memories are of my dad playing his 1947 Gibson. I started showing an interest in playing when I was thirteen years old. A steel worker from a PA coal town, money was tight, to say the least. But dad "hocked his soul" and bought me a 1963, Sunburst Jaguar. I wouldn't put it down? Drove my family nuts! I cut my musical teeth on The Ventures songs. I learned to play in a year and started a band. Take care and keep pickin'! Shalom/gw. PS We had the best cars and the best music. ;-))

Nokie moved to Yuma, Az a while back, and passed away in March of 2018. He lived next to the drummer of the band I still play in. He invited us all into his home, and he and his wife couldn’t have been more gracious! When he passed, his wife asked our drummer to help clear out things so she could sell the house. I was given his 6 instrument guitar stand, a nice poster, and a box full of guitar wall mounts that I presume were for sale at one time. I listened to the Ventures as a kid, but didn’t realize what a great player he was. Thanks for sharing this.

Nice comment and thanks for sharing. But, the Nokie Edwards of the 1960’s eventually blossomed into the player we respect so much. Nokie became the Chet Atkins of his style after decades of hard work. His style, tone and movements reveal to me influences from the best and he put it all together to do his own thing. He was a great player!

A band I used to work with, played a week long gig in a casino up in Florence, Oregon many years ago. Nokie's band headlined on the weekend, and we opened. I was stoked to meet him, being a big Ventures fan as a teen. He couldn't have been nicer. It was also I believe his 74th. Birthday that weekend. He was kind enough to autograph two of my basses. I'm also a Luthier and guitar repairman.. I can tell you- that flamed maple Mosrite shaped guitar, was HEAVY. Rest In Peace, Nokie.

What guitar player does not owe this man a bow. He is the guitar god that started it all. He just plays so well. It is from another time. He is in the class of the greats. How many records did he sell? Likely more than any other guitarist. Not sure but it is a huge number. I thoroughly enjoyed this.

Nokie Edward is a guitar wizard. His performance on stage speaks volume of his versatility in playing music of different genres with equal aplomb. When his fingers ply along the finger board, the audience can expect some creative rendition for granted. I miss Nokie so much that I want to relive him by listening to everything he created.

He was the mentor of my favorite musician, Danny Hamilton. Danny became an excellent guitarist thanks to The Ventures. They were all humble, and I'm glad they always were. Perhaps they aren't as remembered as other famous artists with less talent, but we will always have their lasting contribution to the best music.

The Ventures was one of the first (and one of the best) Rock & Roll bands I heard in the 1960's, and Nokie's playing is always, in my mind, a part of that distinctive sound. We didn't have TV where I grew up, so all the music I was exposed to came via the radio, and I was always glad to hear Nokie and the Ventures. I became a career musician, but didn't pick up a guitar until I was in my 50's. Nokie was one of three finger-sytle players whose sound I could recognize right off, the others being Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins. After getting my thumb bunged up, I adopted using a thumb pick after seeing Nokie using one at a live performance. It's good to hear him playing in this show - we're both a little older now, but Nokie is just as enjoyable now as ever. Thanks for posting this.
