Deee-Lite has to be one of the craziest ensembles ever! You've got Phunkadelic royalty - bass player Bootsy Collins, giving that sick funky groovy bass line. The beautiful, energetic Miss Lady Kier, Japanese DJ Towa Tei, Russian DJ named Dimitri, & Q-Tip the rapper from A Tribe Called Quest. World music for real! Even though they had several albums this was their big hit. Soul, Funk, Dance, Pop, Rap - it's just too fun! How many songs can get away with using a slide whistle? 🤣 "Groove is in the Heart" danced us into the 90's! Every dance club bumped this over & over.

Just for the record, Bootsy Collins did not provide that bassline. That was lifted / sampled from a Herbie Hancock track called "Bring Down the Birds"... I think Bootsy's contribution was just vocals.

In the 90s it was all about the 70s. In the 70s a lot of it was about the 50s… in the 2000s it about the 80s, now it is again leaning toward the 90s. Has been a style nostalgia for all of history generationally.

Far as I know, it was kind of a ‘one hit wonder’, as far as mainstream hits go, & back then they lit up the video circuit for its creativity, but what many artists/DJ’s/producers do is make tracks that can play in dance clubs on an international level. I actually had sent her a message on social media congratulating her on her creative vision & success. Whe responded & was very cool! Q-tip & Bootsy, 👍🏾

This song came out in 1990. I was 25 years old and living in new York city and was an aspiring actress. I waited tables in a restaurant on W 20 street that was half a block down from the infamous nightclub, the Limelight. Some who worked at the club used to come in to the restaurant and I got to know them and hence could get in for free (there was a huge cover charge sometimes) and drink for free. This Limelight was inside of a former church that was built in 1845 and still had pulpits and religious ornamentation all over the place...the irony of all the debauchery. that was going on in a church..lol. It was known for its outlandish theme parties thrown by club kids and all the drugs...Ecstasy was THE big thing then and this song, with all thats going on itit musically, was the perfect marriage.. I adored the limelight....once you walked thru those huge original church doors, you could be whoever you wanted., whatever you wanted. Everyone's uniqueness was embraced, which i loved . Everyone seemed so beautiful and happy...then again we were all high AF!!..Ah youth !!

And no, it wasn't a one-hit wonder, they have many other great songs. What accent? How can you tell an accent when she's singing? If anything, you're the one that has an accent. This was like 1990.
