My 18 YO daughter was talked into going to Taiwan to teach young children. Once there, the principal, who had met her in the US and was the one that talked her into this horrible plan, became a different person. Once there, the principal told my daughter she had to sign papers stating she had a four year degree. My daughter refused, saying the principal knew she only had a high school diploma. The principal also confiscated her passport. My daughter called me to say that this was in no way what was offered to her before she left the US. I called the consulate office in Taipei to let them know my daughter was in trouble there. The consulate called the principal directly to let her know they were monitoring the situation and that this girl needed to return to the US. Long story short, my daughter was taken to the airport in a week and returned home.

The first mistake you made (without judgement) was moving there in 2022 when there was a mass exodus from china (including myself) trying to leave and a black girl died in Shanghai during that time. I absolutely agree with you 110% the energy is completely off in China. It wasn't bad when I moved there in 2017, but when the end of 2019 hit and we couldn't get back into the country during the Chinese New Year holiday, and when we could all get back in, we couldn't get out. I remember being on the last plane from Thailand heading to China. China was so harsh. They made a random last minute decision/rule that anyone on a plane heading to china, needs to land by midnight or they cannot get in. Do you know the people on the planes that missed that deadline (that they were also unaware of this new decision/rule) were never allowed back into the country and were away from their families, belongings, etc until 2022. Only being allowed back in with special permission. They were closing down training schools and going into international schools to remove and change systems. It was very difficult times.

Always look at your own passport(s) and visas/permits while being mindful of all remarks and expiration dates (I believe on the Z visa it specifically states that you are required to apply for a resident permit within 30 days and the little blue (formerly yellow) entry card reminds you of your responsibility to register your address within 24 hours). Businesses will do whatever it takes to keep their profits high (even at the detriment/expense of their employees), and it is not uncommon to use this terrible “leverage tactic”.

@@abena8339 long story, but yeah basically after Covid they changed so many laws about English learning - a lot of English training centers were shut down due to this including the one I worked at (big company with over 200 schools in the country and 10 in the city I was in ) had me unemployed for like 5 months, didn’t get my salary for the last 2 months I worked there including my annual bonus which was a lot, they claimed they wanted to refund parents their tuition fees first then the teachers would get their salary, never happened even when a bunch of people sued. Found a new job, took 2 months to start coz that city was in lockdown so schools were not open. This was a kindergarten, when it was time to move the school refused to make arrangements for the move or even pick up, but agreed we could send our belongings to the address of the school. When I got there no one from the school came to meet us to help find accommodation, first 🚩 i asked for a salary advance to make a down payment for 3 months rent and 1 month deposit on the apartment like how other schools do to help you settle in since I was low on cash due to the lockdowns and unemployment, the school refused saying they don’t have money lol, I spent 2 weeks looking for a suitable apartment while living with a friend. Fast forward school is about to start they went through the agent for us to go and collect our belongings coz they were cleaning up getting ready to open the school, did that and then school started. Second 🚩 they refused to pay for my visa which was a first for me, and the immigration in that city or the agent were scammers they asked for a hefty amount of money for it to be processed, it’s usually ¥400 they were asking for like ¥17,000. Out of desperation I paid with a payment plan from the school about monthly deductions from the school (they said they would put in half but never did). Anyways third 🚩 it wasn’t just normal English teaching like all the other schools, barely had time to prepare for my classes they required me to be with the students 24/7 during all their classes (PE, Chinese, Art, Culture, Music) I was co- teaching all these classes during the day despite each classroom having 5 teachers in there all day. Watch the kids during meal times and nap times (though there’s a full time Nanny in the classroom all day). So this included feeding the students, preparing their beds for nap time, soothing them to sleep sometimes, dressing them up before and after nap time, doing their hair and all that that’s not a part of being an English teacher. They expected us to have a 30 min lunch break when it’s usually two hours and the contract said so too (mind you work started at 7:30-5:00 while the contract said 8:00-4:30), we had to fight for an hour break. Mind you all of this was not in the contract and some of it was against the contract. There was this weird rule that said every teacher should put their phones in the principals office the minute they get to the school and they could have it back by the end of the day when they’re going home to focus on students apparently , foreign teachers refused coz that was ridiculous and we needed our phones to have access to kids songs , printable flash cards and basic presentation of the classes. The school had only one computer to share amongst all the teachers including the printer which didn’t make sense no matter how many times we requested for another one. There was no proper English curriculum to follow I had to introduce one every English teacher could follow. There was a time when lunch break had some weird rule that we couldn’t use the common dining room for lunch break, instead we should just grab a chair and sit outside the door of your own classroom and eat there, like where do they do that at? 💀 that lasted for a short time because it just didn’t make sense how controlling management was. Fast forward after a year of hell, turned out they had changed my work permit from an English teaching position to a Caregiver position without my knowledge which is a big deal, they were withholding my work permit and didn’t want to give it to me. I ended up getting in trouble with the police almost got deported but didn’t, they refused to pay me since “I got in trouble with the law” even though it was their fault. Weird vibes those guys, that was my final straw I left the whole country.

As a full-time traveller, there is nothing I hate more than immigration putting responsibility on the outsider when they don't know the process! In some countries you have to register your address with the police within 48 hours, however ONLY your hotel or AirBnB host can register for you. If THEY don't register for you, YOU are the one who is responsible and you to pay the fine. If it's my responsibility, why not give me the ability to do it myself in the first place?! How do you give the local the ability to do it, but the foreigner the responsibility to make sure it is done. So in a lot of the Eastern European countries we have to run after our hosts for days to make sure they register us 🙄. I hate inefficient legal systems. Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us.

What some of you dont get is that traveling abroad is a gamble. In every sense of word. These organizations give you contracts and bring you in and it is their responsibility to make sure your paperwork is legit because of immigration. Some of them will literally tell you oh its no problem we got it, not a big deal! There are soooo many ways it all can go even when you do what they tell you to do and what you are supposed to do. Been there done that. Its not a matter of judgment its a matter of trusting people who have hired you to work. This is why I suggest that if people are leaving their homes to go to a new place, do not give up your entire life back home in case it doesnt work out. At the least put somethings in storage so if you must come back you have something. And always have enough money to put yourself in a hotel for a month where you are going. Some of these organizations are lawless, it is NOT the fault of the applicant.

Anytime you have a society, where every day, at the end of the work day, no matter where you are in any city in China, you're going to hear the Kenny G soundtrack, "Going Home", then you know that there is something fundamentally wrong with that society. I just had to say it! Your unfortunate experience reaffirmed some doubts and suspicions I've had about China for too long. I'd look forward to go for a visit, I'd supposed. But I have no interest, whatsoever, to be there long term. While it's true that "racism, sexism and all other isms" are prevalent everywhere, apparently China is one of those societies where said isms are virtually legal.

I lived in China 2010 to 2013. As a blue eyed white guy I got treated like a rock star everywhere I went. Strangers would come up and ask for photos with me. But on my first day in the country I met a guy from Kenya who was studying medicine in Wuhan. He basically helped me get from Hong Kong to Guangzhou (where my chinese wife was waiting for me). During the bus ride he told me a lot about the racism he experienced daily. He said it was a lot of small daily things that really bugged him rather than really aggressive things. But at that time China was a very positive place with a lot of optimism about the future. Thats gone now, although i havent been back for about 6 years. One thing that amazed me during my time in China was a washing machine detergent powder advert. They had a really silly advert where a black guy gets in a washing machine, they put the detergent in and turned on the machine and then a white guy climbed out. I have to admit I laughed when I saw that advert but I was also amazed at the mass naivete of a country full of people who clearly had no idea how offensive that really was. I was really laughing at how completely out of touch with basic social norms chinese people in China were and probably still are. A lot of their racism - including the kind of I guess you would call the "positive racism" they had towards me - you can possibly put down to the fact that they really dont know any better, because they have very limited contact with foreigners. But the problem with that idea is that some chinese are absolutely lovely and very sensitive to these things and others can turn racist - in a very dark way - at the drop of a hat. Which I have also experienced in business dealings with China since leaving China. One of the weirdest things Ive found, while doing business in Singapore, is now much the singaporean chinese, hong kong chinese, malaysian chinese, and mainland chinese, all dislike each other. Ive actually heard the worst racists comments about chinese people, from other chinese people.

@@kesay3466 Pandemic or not, there is absolutely no excuse for how this young woman was treated and it ultimately reflects poorly on China and underscores their deeply rooted racism. I've been living here in China for nearly 5 years now... and let me tell you.... the kind of nonsense this young woman endured would never happen to a white woman from Australia, America or Canada. There is absolutely no excuse for a teacher to be punched in the face. If you believe that a teacher is unprofessional or incompetent, then fire him or her, but resorting to violence is never okay or permissible under any circumstance. This African sister didn't deserve what happened to her. Point blank period. Hopefully you will just admit that your judgment is harsh and undue instead of being stubborn about having to be right.

And you did operate with a lot of ignorance for someone who is a teacher….more research was really required before moving. And then you go to another country on the assumption that you can use your credit card!!!!! Basically go to another country with no money! Then the friend who said come to Shanghai where is he in all this? Isn’t that what friends are for? Share information and the whole process, share tips and key things about this move…help you settle or welcome you when you arrive, help you when in need?

First of all , You seem very nice and like a great person, very chill. But I feel like the catfishing looks super bad on your part. I think in China in Asia in general they care too much about appearances just based on all of the story times and videos I've read and heard. I also think Milly is so nice but i feel like shes kinda bending over backwards for you. The tardiness thing too. Ive worked with only asians before and they are so strict! I would never do that again. I think you should have done a bit more research before moving so soon like that! 😢 You seem too chill for a strict teaching job in China like that. The company that i worked in was only Chinese and Vietnamese. Another thing I feel like you had the idea that things in China were gonna be like how they are in Korea but I feel like Chinese have a different mindset than Koreans.

She is just plain incompetent. Handing in lesson plans late, refusing to accept feedback from parents, refusing to cut her nails. " Chill" is a very diplomatic way of putting it but she is like a fish out of water in an Asian work space. Her whole attitude is off. i find this woman talks and talks and it still makes no sense! It has been almost a half a ayear and still she is "angry". it would be better to think how can she help others avoid her challenges, when millions of studients all over the world study in china, with no problem. What mistakes did she make? The wrong ompany? What is its name? Where did she find it? did she speak to other south africans who used this company? etc, etc. 2nd. Did the chinese govt investigate and punish the guy who hit her? If yes? or no? why not? All of this meandering he said, she said is not helpful and too personal. There are millions of manipulative people in the world! People who go abroad alone all are strong people! I have traveled to many countries and did everything myself. I found schools, jobs, etc... In paris a polish guy to advantage of me and I threatened him, but because I was american, he gave in and paid me my salary, then I left! People helped me, etc... That is what you do, when you travel alone. Otherwise, you go trhough a school in your own country who set up everything. That way you donot have to worry or be strong. cheers!

She seems to have problems everywhere. Even in South Korea . One of her videos was a rant about how Asian men don't want to date black women. She seems to have self worth issues, but at the same time seems to much prefer non African countries and even men.
