Californians find homes in Mexico to offset the skyrocketing cost of living.
Due to the increasingly unsustainable cost of living in California, more residents have left the state to live south of the border in search of a more sustainable lifestyle.
In this video, Andrew shares an article from CNBC explaining why people find Mexico more attractive than the USA.

I've been researching a move to SE Asia. I moved from San Jose to Phoenix 18 years ago. It will cost me more to live in SE Asia when I factor in homeownership. Food is the same or more depending on what and how I eat. Electric is higher and AC would likely be a 24/7 thing while in Phoenix it's a 4-5 month thing. I still plan to move but without thinking it will be cheaper. There are many places in the US that don't have the "endless grind" and have a much lower cost of living. It's really only a few tiny areas where that isn't true.

I lived in Merida, Yucatan from August 2020 up until March of this year and after I received my residency I relocated to Guadalajara, Jalisco and this place is a great city to live in. Living in Mexico can be great...until reality hits. A thriving business that gets noticed will be potentially approached to be extorted if established in such a country, and there's no escaping the situation. If the business's market is outside MX, then that can work. Foreigners do drive up cost of living for locals, but an intelligent approach is to improve the local situation in collaboration with the direct community. This helps both groups. Wherever someone goes...commit to making it a better place.

I arrived in SoCal with my parents in 1956 from Stockholm Sweden, I was 5 years old. I grew up in California and LOVED it. We were in the middle of everything, Newport Beach, Palm Springs, Lake Arrowhead, Downtown L.A. where all within an hour drive of our home. Being a "Californian" I often tell people that I really only had one ambition in life; to live at the beach. So I moved to Santa Monica in 1979 when I was 27 years old, renting a one bedroom apartment at 5th and Bay St for $250 a month. Over the years I lived in Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Playa del Rey, and Marina del Rey. I had my sailboat in Marina del Rey for 25 years. 2008 was the year that brought it all down. My wife's father died, her mother broke her hip and my wife lost her HR job, (after laying off 250 people). I stood one afternoon on my porch in Santa Monica apartment and gazed towards the southern intersection where I could actually see the building that I had first moved into in 1979. Then it struck me that here I was, having moved so many times , right at the same place I was in 1979. The only fundamental difference were that I was married now, had a rent of $2,800 instead of $250. In a nutshell I really hadn't gotten anywhere in in 29 years. SO, we decided to avoid a looming disaster, cut our loses and move to The Woodlands TX. We lived there 10 years, we were finally able to buy a house that, if it had been in Santa Monica would have cost way over a million bucks. I loved being a home owner after all those renter years as a renter. But after 10 years of oppressive heat and our house nearly flooding during Hurricane Harvey, we decided suburban home ownership in a cul de sac in Texas just wasn't our style so we cashed in on rising real estate prices and moved to San Miguel de Allende. My father sold the family home in California of 50+ years recently, and, as sad as that was, visiting L.A. had actually become so depressing I was weirdly glad. California today isn't even a shadow of what it used to be. What sticks in my mind the most is that what used to be a 30-40 minute drive to grandpa's house for Christmas or Thanksgiving, is today a 5 hour trek. BTW loved that speedy little drive down Ocean Ave with my old office in the background left 1 Wilshire.

@@Gallo2023 Yes Beto, When I lived in Venice Beach you could buy a great house for about $100,000 a block from the beach. The problem was interest rates at that time were sky high, 15-20%. Also being self employed was not a recipe for steady income. It's OK, I finally bought a house when I was in my late 50's and discovered that living in the suburbs of Texas is a soul robbing experience. I rent now in a 500+ year old town and walk everywhere. No more wasting life in an A/Ced transportation pod crawling at 20mph over acres and acres of asphalt. Good riddance!

@@Gallo2023 Yes Beto, houses were cheap and so were wages and salaries. In the 70's in southern California $20,000- $30,000 was a pretty good yearly income. A new Mustang cost about $3,500. My Dad first house he bought new for $9,000. What you have to realize is that in the United States overall, salaries have stagnated since the 70's. If wages had kept up with inflation the minimum wage today would be $23.00. I can see why people from around the world move here as it has a nice relaxed, easygoing feel to it. The people are nice, the food is great, and the weather is good. Try doing that in Cali! My wife and I are retired and live in San Miguel de Allende. My son and I speak decent Spanish and my wife is trying to learn (it would be her sixth language). We have embraced Mexico for what it is, and there’s a lot to love about it. My biggest pet peeve since moving here is gringos from the US or Canada who move here and try to change Mexico into where they come from. They’re being arrogant and missing the point of why you come here in the first place.

@@rodrigolara6733 Oh yes, I totally agree with you that location choice is the most important factor!! Yes, yes. My best advice is for a person to do research trips staying as long as possible in several places.. research online and by word of mouth. I took trips to many places in Mexico in the 1980s. I was offered two teaching jobs, one at a seminary and another in Mexico City, the pay though could not match or come close to my US faculty salary...I kept searching spots in the 90s and retired in 97 to a sailboat. I stayed long periods of time at anchor at Isla Mujeres and along the Yucatan coast. But for me I was done dodging hurricanes though I love many beach communitites. I focused on the Bahia researching until 2004 when I chose instead on particulat town in Guatemala mostly because it was like my favorite Mexican towns of the 80s before they became less traditionally Mexican... Guatemala is less developed and Americanized than Mexico which I prefer, but most Americans wouldnt. The town I chose is very like San MIguel Allende WAS...I could still live in SMA, Americanized as it is, but this place has better weather...eternal Spring and is an hour away from the capital so closer to an International Airport then SMA is to Mexico City for direct flights to Spain, the USA and South America. Here in Guatemala there are only two areas I would live Antigua and Lake Atitlan...in Mexico there are many that are suitable...Viva Mexico!

Exodus? LOL. People have moved to Mexico since forever, and cross border workers too. Sell house, cash out, live on the beach, and (in baja's case) drive across the border for your Medical. Pretty sweet deal for seniors. I have a house in Mexico and the US and don't plan to sell either. Spend more time in Baja once I retire? Ya I like beer, fishing and tacos.

Playa del Carmen has become unaffordable for Mexican’s due to foreigners driving up the cost with there need for gringo luxury and luxury real estate. Hence a lot more dangerous due to this over the last decades along this coastal area. Mexican aren’t getting by far the wages needed to keep up.

It's not even that. I've been living in the mexican caribbean two years. It's causing inflation just like the usa. We are 1 percent behind the US at 7 percent right now. So pretty soon Mexico will have the same issues as the usa with gas and everything else. Exactly why I'm leaving in under a week and a half for Europe.

@@belle42 Mexico do have laws that prohibit land adquisition by foreigners, but international buyers found a legal loophole (fideicomiso) by using a bank trust . Anyway there IS (somewhat) afordable housing, just in areas far from the city center where crime is rampart, with limited services and poor transport infraestructure.

As a home owner in both US and Mexico it’s not as easy as you think unless you are ready to pay the more People move here the higher the cost . Also unless you are rich or have a business that gives you monthly income it’s not gonna work because the wages in Mexico are very low and remember it’s still a third world country in the majority of places and unless you are willing to pay for a nice home in the range of of 300k and up along with community fees places like Mereida and Mexico City are very expensive cities. If you don’t know the language good luck. The bureaucracy is slow the roads suck and the power goes off once in a while.
