I doesn't matter if you're on the road or in a sticks & bricks, there will always be troubles to deal with. I had to replace a hot water heater just before Christmas, have new gutters put on between 2 storm systems (first storm took them off), and now I need to deal with a sewer issue in the Spring that involves heavy equipment. If you lived in a tent in the woods, the tent would leak. It's just life, that's all.

This is why I always service my trans every 3 years or 30k miles. and when I buy a used RV, Truck, or car. I drop the trans pan and put in a new filter and new trans fluid. If your going to travel you need to take care of your motor and trans. A RV works a lot harder with all that weight , so take care of your RV.

I think you have a great RV, but it's a machine and machines have failures. It could actually be something fairly simple. Once fixed, you won't have this worry again. I fully understand the stress and frustration but it will fade after you get past this. You put way more miles on an RV than most people, so you have to be very careful about maintenance and I think you do this. even so, shit happens. That's why a small emergency savings fund might be a good idea. You can build this up slowly and make a habit out of putting a few dollars into the kip for days like this ... better days farther down the road ...

Eric once the transmission is fixed and you keep tabs of needs between oil changes, you will have more control of the engine than surprises. Get an RV motor home insurance such as Good Sam, they deal with rvs and motorhomes every day not like AAA. I have used them dozens of times over the last 10 years. One time in my 5th wheel my truck died they used two huge tow vehicles, one for the truck and another for the trailer. No extra charge. Second, use a cell phone based GPS when driving, you will know exactly where you are AND know where the next exit is ! Best of luck... Ron W.

Wow I am really very sorry to hear about what has been happening. It's never fun to break down on the road but your experiences sound like nightmares. I have driven Semi trucks for many years and fortunately I have never had to wait 6 hours for a tow truck. And the one where the guy was damaging your motor home and bicycle I sure hope the tow company or triple A took care of that for you. I hope you don't give up on living on the road, you may be having some bad luck lately, between this and finding out your floor is messed up which hopefully won't be too much to get fixed in both cases. But you are definitely cut out very well for what you are doing. You are a very resourceful person. I wish you the best of luck with your transmission and a smooth journey for you when you get back on the road.

Also, breaking down anywhere is sucky. Especially in the dark. Tow trucks, especially when you need a longer one to tow an RV, are notorious for taking a long time to reach you. But, you have your home, with everything you need, right there while you wait.

As you've already found out, Aamco never just services a transmission, nor do they rebuild your own transmission. They have lots of various transmissions in the back of greatly varying and inconsistent rebuild quality; but they'll always try to tell you some "specifics" of what went wrong with your transmission but will inevitably replace it. They also don't charge you the amount of what it costs to rebuild your exact transmission; they charge you what it cost them to rebuild the transmission from someone else's vehicle to get it running in your vehicle. I do sincerely wish you the best of luck with them. I know all of this as I've been to court with Aamco and learned all of this the hard way. If I was to get a transmission, I would have gone to a GM dealership and had one of their reman. transmissions installed with a 3 year/36000 mile warranty; and the Goodwrench transmissions have good consistency in the quality of the unit you receive. Hang in there!

This is just life, Eric. You'll bounce back up. Even if you did plant your feet somewhere you'd still have problems. It is more frustrating to be somewhere you are unfamiliar with and in the dark etc. But you handled this fine and you seem more in control this time around. The thing is, you're getting better and better at handling these things and that should give you some reassurance. And you're teaching others what to do in similar situations. Priceless. Good Luck today and I hope it's an easy fix.

Hey Dude. I hated to hear you say "maybe life on the road just isn't for me." Don't give up. The reality is that everybody has bad days whether they're on the road or living a traditional lifestyle. Don't let them win! NOT EVER! Don't let society beat you! Don't give them one shred of your happiness. When society starts to bust in on you, let it roll, and think that maybe that 6 hour delay was God, your Angel, or Karma saving you from something. Always find a way to turn energy draining events into energy refilling events. I'm a retired biochemist, and science taught me that energy is never lost, but just converted. I apply that to life as well. So, when something or someone drains your mental energy system, find where the energy went, (usually into negative thoughts because of unmet expectations), and what it converted to, (usually anger and frustration), and grab onto it, convert it back (by rethinking your expectations), and refill your reserves. See, I will say that your experience just helped me tremendously, BC I was just about to sign up my RV with AAA. Now knowing they only allow 4 per year, I will choose a different company I know has better limits. So, if for no other reason than believing your tough experience may help others is positive thinking to turn things around. Seriously, you really helped me decide. AAA does not list their yearly limit. I also saw another video you had with Lidia where they made you wait 8 hours. I have health problems, and will now choose an RV specialized road service. So...I'd hate to see you throw on the towel BC of them. Chin up!

@cats400 8 жыл бұрын
Another reason I won't join AAA or any other roadside assistance program because these towing companies won't send a truck to you if they have another customer who needs the same type of truck if they are getting paid more by the other customer. That's why you waited so long on the side of the road, you were not a priority because AAA does not fully pay a towing company that is in their program. Recently, I needed a tow and I waited almost 3 hours because I went through my insurance and they gave me a good deal on a tow. Same principal. They were not being paid the same amount that other customers were paying and I was then forced to wait until they could bother to finally tow me.

I just want to add that my husband and I are 62 and 54. He'll retire at 66 in 3.5 years. We paid off our house last year. We're seriously considering buying an rv of some type and hitting the road when he retires. Watching these videos is helping us with that decision. If we do head out, we'll know much more about how to do it and what to expect. If fate blesses us with a grand baby before then, the entire plan will probably be nixed. Who could blame us for wanting to be as close as possible to a grand baby??

Hey man, have your throttle position sensor checked out, the "tsp" (on the engine)when defective can create a situation that mimics a faulty transmission...the "tsp" communicates with the transmission and if that communication is severed the transmission does not know the correct time (RPM) to shift. I hope that is the only problem, it's a relatively cheap fix...good luck!!!

I had AAA for over ten years and switched to GoodSam over 10 years ago after AAA was unable to send a tow service to rescue us, in our first, small, class C. I had to find a tow company on my own on the side of the road with cars rushing by. Comments from friends with RV'ers and the tow truck driver I found to rescue us, pointed me to GoodSam. Thank God, we meet that tow truck driver. He was absolutely correct, GoodSam is a good service for RVers. In over ten years, we have needed GoodSam once to tow our 40' Class A RV that weights 38K lbs empty, once for a tire change on the RV (which is no easy job), once for a mobile RV repair, once for a car tow and once for a battery jump on a car. After our first experience, I'll never be without a GoodSam membership. They take care of the customer. A wonderful service. It's a little higher priced but worth it.

@ Noamadic Fanatic Your not a profitable customer to AAA. Why would they want to continue business with you if you need 3 tows from a semi wrecker per year. They want to cut their loses. So if you have to wait 6 hours and for multiple trucks. Then told you have reaached your limit. Maybe you would cancel, that is what they are hoping.

I worked for a tow company for over 2 years. I can honestly say triple A was the worst for sending the wrong vehicle information to the tow companies. It also depends on the staffing of the tow company. Where I worked we only had two drivers who were qualified to drive a "big rig" wrecker. Depending on how backed up the calls were customers, unfortunately, had to wait for long periods of time before we could get someone out to tow. Honestly I think you get better service if you call the tow company yourself but it is pricey without an insurance company to cover a portion or even full amount. Good luck in the future!

"Life is nothing but 1,000 little slaps in the face." My friend's favorite quote. Sometimes it feels like that. I had a rough day too, different reason, of course, but we just have to keep on keeping on. Your experiences provide lots of things to consider when choosing what type of an RV to get. Having the engine in the RV complicates matters as it seems they are not as reliable as a good tow truck. Just seems that way, anyway. I'm still torn between a travel trailer, class B or class C. It’s in limp mode! The best thing to do if you loose a gear while driving pullover for about 30 minuets let the transmission fluid cool down and you can usually get the gear back. You either burnt the clutches in top gear which you would have smelled or you have a bad shift solenoid!

I have AAA, too. I like to have someone to call 24 hrs. I called when a I had a terrible noise on my Pontiac and she wanted to tow me from Cortez to Durango. I said no thanks; then went to a GM Dealership after I drove it to Durango myself. He said it was safe to drive. (This was the advice from my mechanic dh, who works at a GM Dealership himself.) Turns out my entire wheel was falling off and was about to in Ooray, CO. Called AAA and they said, "Did you call before?" and I said yes. He was so nice; he had me towed to a service station under five miles away and my car was fixed the next day for about $200. I just chalk it up to: "Sometimes the travel Gods are ANGRY!"

Keeps strong dude. Life likes to throw in wrenches now and then, don't let it change your life if it doesn't have to

Just a tip for everyone: digitally record all your phone calls like Nixon. It could save your ass one day. Keep your wheels on the ground. Aloha.

Solenoid or transmission sensor issue:If is and a electrical issue like the "solenoid"..need to check in that..it will put your transmission in" limp in mode"...a bad sensor o solenoid..transmission will not shift in 3rd o 4th gear..may be a blowing fuse..need to check the fuses..

what you described sounds like "limp mode" that your transmission went into. It does that to protect itself and the engine. If that is what truly happened, then all you most likely needed was a sensor replaced, not a complete rebuild on an RV with that few miles on it.

Sorry to see you in trouble. I have found that if you take a vehicle ,any vehicle, that has sat a while that you need to change the fluids in the motor, transmission, and make sure you check the brake master cylinder.

So sorry about such a terrible time you had,,especially with triple A....we used to have them and got rid of them (bad service, too expensive) hope everything works out for you and things get better.

I wish you all the best of luck and succes with getting the RV fixed! It's such a nice vehicle and really shouldn't give you this amount of trouble! (But in case you get another RV because you don't trust Yoda any more, try and see if you can get a manual - much less transmission trouble!)

Eric, I had 4 service calls last year and haven't had a chance to do any significant travel. Don't be discouraged. Crap happens regardless of lifestyle.
