I would suggest replacing the blue sheds door 🚪 with one that has no windows, a peephole if you prefer a lookout. Another option ( less secure ) is a door with glass windows only at the top, but not close enough to easily reach inside and unlock. A door replacement isn't very expensive and is the best security upgrade, along with replacing the screws currently used on the strike plates. Swapping the screws to 3" or 3 1\2" will secure them into the 2" × 4" studs amd make kicking the door in much tougher.
@patriciauselton64602 жыл бұрын
Seconding what Rider said about swapping out the shorter screws on the strike plate and eventually upgrading to a metal door with a fan lite or other small window. A keyless entry is another option.
@dkayser15002 жыл бұрын
You should turn the shed door around so it opens inwards. All the locks in the world aren't going to secure a door that you can just pop the hinge pins out of :D
@robsycko2 жыл бұрын
Yea but an inswung door can be kicked in a lot easer than an out. Locks only keep people from walking in. If someone wants in there are to many way;s to consider. With a battery powered saw or chain saw it would take only minutes to make a new door. 🤣

Seriously, that deadbolt isn't going to do much on a thin wooden door with completely unprotected gaps and just a thin metal plate with two screws. If there's anything worth stealing in there, they'll just pull open the door with a crowbar.

Should have gotten a door lock reinforcement plate before you drilled the deadbolt. It puts a SS metal plate over the door on the inside and wraps around the door to the outside and the two locks are installed over the plate. You can also install blocking between wall studs at lock height on the inside on both sides of the door between wall studs. That will make it a little tougher for people to use a bottle jack to jack open the doorway by spreading the joists apart. You can also setup a battery with a 12volt siren with a door sensor and a key switch to turn on or off for cheap. Get another trickle charger panel and small battery for it. The things we have to do to keep our property from evolving legs while we are away. Take care.
@kj-kasper44142 жыл бұрын
I would strongly suggest getting window grates so people cant gain entry. Get one for each window and one for the door window as well. You can never be too cautious.

Be careful with those small solar panels, a lot of times they will pull or draw power all night until the sun comes up. You're better off with a larger panel hooked up to a 12v battery charger hooked to the bike 👍

I was surprised that it took you that long to figure out that you needed a double key lock, as you were installing it, right next to that window😉 I have done stuff like that, I just chalk it all up to you live and you learn. Interesting projects, I like the door lock template, it looked like it worked very well and I liked that you were able to get an extension for the cord for your solar panel🙂 Black Betty should be ready to Rock, Rumble and Roll in the Spring👍🙂
@rationalbushcraft2 жыл бұрын
Don’t double key it. You would not be able to do that in a normal residential house because of fire codes. If you plan on living in it at any point you risk forgetting to put the key in and panicking trying to get out. Better would be to block the door windows so they can’t be smashed in. Also I would recommend a better lock. Abus makes a good hard to pick lock. With quickset or most models you get at Home Depot a low skill raking attack will pop them right open. At least Abus has security pins and some steel anti drill pins. Not unpickable but it takes a skilled picker to open it and most criminals won’t work that hard to learn.

Well, I think Eric you should be lucky because Arizona is normally as hot as Hades! At a higher altitude you not only have much better weather, greener surroundings, but a bargain property. Best place in Arizona in which to live. Seems Show Low is an up and coming community, and it sounds wonderful. The snow showers there are so mild compared to most places, but it keeps it green and cooler, especially during the summer months. Rather than replace the new lock, I'd replace the original, that way it allows you to lock it from inside by just twisting the bolt if you like that option... 😊
@janritchardson14892 жыл бұрын
We have property up there. They broke into us twice. They just drilled the center of the lock out. Good thing someone is always there. They are take advantage of seasonal people. We have shed like yours. We also have metal storage containers with special locks they couldn’t open , so they cut a hole in the side of the container. We have barb wire fence around the property and they cut it on the side of property where you have to leave easement and drive their truck it.

Regarding the deadbolt: better to have it keyed both sides. Burglar can get in through the window. Trouble/time leaving with the goods back through the window. Those door glass panes: install a custom cut poly carbonate "bullet proof" panel on the inside, secure with stout frame and/or screws every 6 inches. Last, consider mounting a game trail camera somewhere nearby. Might catch a burglar on the road in/out.

Many moons ago, I worked at Ace Hardware. I can't count how many times people asked me “which lock set is best”? I always answered; “best lock set? Well, how many windows do you have on your first floor”? I always recommended they get one in their budget. The best and most expensive lock is NOT going to keep criminals out. In the history of criminal activity, none of them has ever tried to pick a lock to get into a house. They either kick your door in, usually the back or side door OR they open an unlocked window or break one. And with crime the way it is today and getting worse, get an alarm and cameras.

The key is SOUTHERN Arizona, not Northern. Very different terrain up North. Flagstaff has gotten snow storms of up to 4 ft in a day. Phoenix? We only see a couple peaks with a dusting of snow in a very cold storm. Most folks go to Quartzsite AZ/ Blythe CA area. The amount of snowbirds there would floor you. Pre-coovy, with Canadians added in, population was around 1.5 to 2... MILLION peeps. Every winter. Spread out on longterm dispersed camping areas. Boondocking. Also RV parks. It's really something. And while it can still get pretty cold at night (typical high desert) its pretty sunny and nice during the day and for the Win, no snow. That's the "go to Arizona for the winter" folks hear about. There's an amazing flea market/swap meet in Quartzsite. Rockhounders dream. Good food, interesting baubles and crafts, loads of rocks and gemstones, trinkets, imports from south of the border (objects, not people, lol). It's a culture out there unto itself.
