Hi another method of helping to keep warm is a hot water bottle. I love the warmth coming from them. I always have one at my feet and back sometimes I keep one in front of me. Some years ago Dollar Tree had small flannel covered hot water bottles I sometimes put them on the back of my neck it was heaven the best part is I only takes hot water and under the cover they last a long time. I put them in my sleeping bag the same as I do in bed. When stealth when I cant turn on my engine It gives me one more to keep warm. The water can be reheated and reused.

Be super careful with the hand and body warmers. I used the exact same ones and got a 2nd degree burn! Got very comfy and fell asleep while holding on to it. Woke up in horrible pain. 1 ER visit later, I had 2nd degree burn that took almost 3 weeks to heal. DO NOT USE WHILE SLEEPING. It must stay in motion. If it stays in 1 place (like when you fall asleep) you will end up hurting yourself.

Although a bit costly, down comforter or even better for those really, really cold nights, a down sleeping bag or top quilt. Getting a 20F degree one (which is the lower limit of the bag to keep you alive). A layer on top if it's super super cold should keep you toasty at night. Down packs down to nothing, so can easily be stowed away in a pillow case. When camping in 30F weather, I use 2 summer weight downs. One is a 40Fsleeping bag with hood and the I stuff the other one ( an 70F envelope type or top quilt no hood) into the sleeping bag. All down not created equal, so a bit of research is helpful to fit your needs. Also a hot water bottle in the bed and near the body does well to keep things toasty. Camping we use nalgene bottles but in a van, I'd opt for a hot water bottle. Thank you for taking us with you on your journey, keeping it real and in a quiet way, showing us that we can step out of our comfort zone to try something totally different, be successful ......and, always have a "Plan B".

You might want to start the heater for a few minutes when it's cold like that, I have heard other van dwellers say that the exhaust needs to be cleared out regularly. Just long enough to warm things up enough to get the day started. It won't use that much propane. No need to suffer needlessly. And yes!! SO much smarter to back the car in!! In case the battery died, you're facing the right way for a jump!! Yay!

Someone may have mentioned this, but have you tried using electric hand warmers? They look like a computer mouse, recharge with USB cable, and last a VERY long time. You can put it in your pocket, under a blanket, in bed with you, etc. I got these for normal use in winter because my hands get colder than the rest of me, and I keep a blanket across my lap and a warmer in the blanket and it's awesome. Amazon sells them for like $15. Just look up "usb hand warmer." I recommend getting 2 or 3 of them, one for each pocket, and one you can swap on the charger. :D
