Hi Rick, you´re absolutely right. I´m In Costa Rica, 12 years now full time. If you can´t protect your stuff it will be gone. I was even the victim of a home invasion burglary one rainy night, woke up and all my valuables were gone, I think they had a key or picked the lock on the security bar gate on the front door. I tell newbies, bright lights. burglar bars. razor wire. big mean dogs. alarm system. get a gun and randomly empty the mag into the ground or a target with a backstop to let everyone know they rob you at the peril of being shot. I give a trusted tico neighbor a couple beers and a pack of smokes to guard my place when I go to town for groceries. That´s how the locals do it and it works for them...most of the time.

Good morning all =.. Buy a shipping container.. They are cheap and super secure. You will always be a target of theft anywhere, Imagine when you travel. When we build its the first structure on site. If you buy a container lock its soooooo hard to cut off. you need torches to break into one and they keep critters and bugs out, They are also heavy enough the wind will not budge them. With the flat roof they work really well as a base for your solar panels and CC controller power building. Just resist the idea of adding any windows or extra doors. People als have at or cottage and leave boat motors 4 wheelers in them and its the only defence. Ive seen signs of atempted break ins they always give up. .. Further think Guest Room or in Special K's case panic room :)

2lotony A few others have suggested solar panels, but they'll steal the damn panels too. Also, others have said it takes a torch to get into those containers, but the doors need a lock and my buddy used a battery driven DeWalt grinder on his and the lock was off in 3 minutes. It takes someone living there with a shotgun, I think, to really be secure.

My first camper van was a minivan. I had a kitchen with a sink, a microwave, a refrigerator, and a slow cooker. I had a bathroom with a camper shower. I had a monitor that I connected my phone to, to watch tv. A single size bed. Under the bed was my closet. And the back of my van was my electronics bay. I had one 255 watt solar panel, 3 155watt gel cell batteries that powered every thing. It took me 1 year to design it and build it. I lived in my minivan for 2 years. Then I bought a full size van. Moved everything from the minivan to the full size van. Lived 2 years in the full size van. Then started to rent a house while I was supposed to have my full size van (nickname: The Beast) worked on. The cost was going to cost more then I bought the van for. So, now I'm looking for a newer full size van. Hopefully by the end of this summer I'll start a new dream and a year from then move back to the camper van life style.

I don't know how hard it might be to find the materials there, but I keep thinking about those little stacks of shims that aren't welded well (sorry, I know you're so proud of them). While you're feeling 'rock solid' right now, the smallest shift in either soil slip or small earth quake could easily cause your home to slip off one of these, the result being you'll, at minimum, drive those pillers up into your undercarriage. If it fell just right, it also might end on it's side. Either way, it's really sketch!!! So my suggestion would be to see if you can't access some I-BEAM long enough to extend pillar to pillar so as to build basically an H shaped frame, shimmed with the largest flats possible, all strapped solidly to your piers. And, as has been said before, make it able to accept/remove shims as the ground under you shifts with the rains...coz it will! This is one area where being OVERLY cautious is sensible. Also, if you put skirting around the bottom, you'll avoid animals taking refuge under your rig and can provide you with a crawl space shed with a lockable door to store your stuff. All of it can be broken into, but " outta sight, outta mind". Welcome home! Lynn

Love my country! But unfortunately people taking things from your yard are going to be a recurring thing if you don’t play safe. Unlike the USA for the must part no one take things from your yard but if you notice must houses in Panama have security fences and rod iron on the windows so people won’t break in. Even though Boquete it’s pretty safe you still have to take precautions. Get some security cámaras and a gate for your property.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but, in US, if it ain't chained down, it's gone! Directly proportionate to the gap in resources. Don't be fooled by the blaming on drug use...we've had massive drug use for half a century. This kind of behavior spiked when it became clear there was nothing left to lose. As long as you can still believe that working a little harder will get you what the neighbor has, it's a better bet than jail. When you look around and see that our system rewards and protects the crooks, well, it ain't rocket science! Lynn

Hey, long time sub, but don’t comment often. Your channel is among my very favourites (yes, that’s the Canadian spelling)! It has been a pleasure traveling remotely through you both. Lockbox!!! It seems like you’re desperate for storage, and it’s only going to get more challenging. What about a big metal box bolted to a concrete pad? You can decide your own dimensions, it will last forever, and most of all, it will take temptation away from the community. You might be able to do it in wood too, if you build it strong and smart enough. Plus, this seems like a more realistic option than a shipping container. Anyway, I think it was inevitable, and I’m sorry for you guys, but please protect what you have for peace of mind. The last thing you want is resentment towards a community you’re new too. I’ll buy some coffee sometime, just waiting for the perfect batch! Be well, Paul.

Hate to piss on your parade but almost every Cholo has an angle grinder as most do tile and concrete work. Now that the battery versions are cheaper or easily stolen from someone else that big metal box is a big metal target. They'll just take the box and all the contents. They wait for you to leave and call a friend with a truck and away she goes.

GeoMac Granddad your right. Make it time consuming and visible. However, I’m not sure I’d want cameras if I was living their lifestyle. What about storing some stuff in one of your water containers? Just make it a pain, a simp,e lock can go a long way. Grabbing something out in the open, and breaking and entering are very different I think... If they really want it, they will find a way to get it, such is life right?

Hi guys. Roaches are attracted to moisture. Spread some borax (boron) around the bottom hidden corners or get some DE (Diatomaceous earth ). I use both here in Florida and never see any inside. I also spray DE around the perimeters of my condo as well as the door areas so it keeps them from coming in. Looking good everyone!

That had to hurt, Kaylee. Now that your bus is permanent on your homestead, you should make a shower from that pvc pipe. Look at the one Eamon and Beck made and just copy that.

Sorry to hear about the theft. I agree with other comments, get to know your neighbors better and make good friends. Although it is discouraging, stay positive, think of it as a donation to someone who may really depend on it to live. Kaylee, very relieved that it was mace and you recovered. I thought for sure you were sanding or something without eye protection and my heart dropped. Keep going, bus looks good, cozy and comfortable.

Elbow up on the end of the grey water pipe with a short piece of pipe. The short piece of pipe not taller than the start of the run. Then most of your water will go to the plants and it will still overflow if you use a lot of water. You don't want to cap the end or if the drip holes got plugged it could back up into the van.

I'm sorry that happened, at least they didn't get into the bus. Out of a bad situation, came a good one, your on the land, to enjoy the evenings as well. I would get a few cams, hook them into your phones, also put signs out, "under surveillance". They may not be able to read, but they can see the picture on the sign of camera. Sometimes just a sign will keep thieves at bay. A shipping container is a great idea. I know you have designed your tiny home, but there's a young couple on you tube, called "Life uncontained". They have made a beautiful home from two shipping containers. Worth watching. Be safe you guys, you live in a nice area, but there will always be those that don't live nice lives.

You cannot leave things when you live remote like that (i;ve been living in South Americ for 10+ years. When people only earn $200 a month and life is a struggle petty theft happens . Adopt a few stray dogs that stay at the property 24x7 (i.e. not a pet you take with you when you go out) and your problems will be solved

Remember if it's not secured it will be stolen. Your a prime target out in the middle of nowhere. Learn from this or get robbed again. Luvin your vids. M

Lived in Panama and recently moved back to Canada. If it isn't nailed down it will get stolen for absolutely sure. I have seen parts of roofs peeled back to get in. I have had bikes, tools, money and clothes hanging outside to dry have disappeared. Just the nature of the place as of cockroaches, get over it if you live there. They are every where restaurants, homes, stores everywhere. So in Rome!!!

I live in costa rica, built our home in 2008. Thieves everywhere. Take the dogs inside at nite. The snakes have killed two of my pit bulls. My big boy loved to stay out at nite and wait for the jaguar to come down the path. He wanted to kill the cat, had chased it a couple of times. He is dead now, thieves shot him.

Boric Acid Powder with a tiny bit of sugar, and some ground Dog food, will get rid of any Cockroach issue you are having. Look, I love where I live here in Rural Mexico, but I realise if we did not have the 3.5 meter wall around this place, we would have constant theft issues. I think the Shipping Container idea is really a good one. Long Term and so secure. Good Luck!!
