I am a fan of this system but I got a unit with some hardware problems. You find out about a company when there are problems. I'm genuinely pleased to report that my first problem was fixed quickly. My biggest problem was sending the unit back as I live in Brexitainia. I had to send it back a second time and the Czech company said they'd send me a new one as I really didn't trust the device anymore. I'm happy to say this company, both in Portugal and Czech Republic are decent and honourable. They're also pretty responsive when there is a problem so my takeaway is this. A good system from a decent company. I had a bit of a crappy unit and the backup was honest and honourable.

For many years, I used a Ule ruggedized mobile just for navigation on motorcycles. It worked well with predownloaded maps, IP68. Connected to my motorcycle battery. But it was just a ruggedized mobile. Washelpfull, till it fell off from the RAM mount, and realize only when I stopped. This seems great product to have. I have picked up a Tomtom and have been using it ever since.

First, let me say, you guys are very good. I have watched a few videos on your trips and I love it. Also a thank you for all the information you gather and share with the rest of us. I have a Garmin XT and the only reason I bought it was because of the screen brightness. Using the phone for sometime it pissed me off when I needed to look at the map and couldn't se a thing during the day. My question is... which screen is brighter during day light and direct sunlight? Garmin Zumo XT or the Caper Iter Pad? If they are at least the same, I will change my setup to the Caper Iter because Garmin sux. Planing a trip is a pain and most of the time it does not find the address I need, at least not in Portugal where I'm from. Any information on this comparison would be appreciated.

For many years I have been using a Garmin 590LM, coupled with Garmin VirbXE cameras. Although one can only pair one camera at a time, I had the ability to control the camera from the GPS unit. This makes it much easier to poke a button on the screen to take an image or start a video. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, and I "upgraded" to a Garmin XT2. I was extremely disappointed to learn that since Garmin discontinued their Virb camera line, with the exception of their backup cameras, deleted camera control from the XT series. As a part time KZbinr, I relied on camera control to produce my videos.

Hello Nomad Sweden. I've watched many of your videos on the Carpe Iter (CI) and DMD and would like your insight. I'm planning a cross-country trip across the U.S.A. and possibly down the Pan American on a DR650. It would be as much off road as possible. I've previously only used my smart phone and a TomTom Rider 550 for navigation, and both have worked well enough. But with this trip ahead of me, I was in between the Garmin Montana and the CI. The Garmin appears not to have POIs and city/highway navigation as a base map. It would be something I'd have to purchase. For the CI, it comes with Locus and you can really use any downloadable maps. What has been your experience with city and highway navigation without using your phone/sim data? I understand it is great with off road so I'm not worried about that. I'd like to use it offline or without data as much as possible, both in on and offroad. Thanks, Sean
@NomadSweden
@NomadSweden 4 ай бұрын
Hi! DMD2 works very well offline. The main difference is that you don't get the super detailed directions like which lane to use etc. It shows where you need to go, that's all, but it's enough. Instead of the CI I would get the new DMD T-865x which is sold by Thork Racing. It's brighter, lighter and is made by the DMD2 team.
@seansterr7236
@seansterr7236 4 ай бұрын
@@NomadSweden Thanks for the response! I just watched your video where you compare the CI to the DMD tablet and phone. How would you compare the holder and mounting brackets from CI and DMD. The DMD doesn't look like it locks it in as much as the CI does, though all reviews say it is very sturdy. And when you look at included offline maps, the CI has Locus world maps and the DMD would have their world maps included? And with that DMD world maps, you can search for any address or POI? I've been playing around with Locus and can't seem to do basic searches for addresses. For example, I can find a street but cannot look for a specific house number. I would like to understand the full specs for each map interface before I pull the trigger on a purchase.
@seansterr7236
@seansterr7236 4 ай бұрын
Another question: I see you bought the DMD phone also for your Africa trip. Could you have taken your CI tablet and just hooked it up to your rented bikes battery or accesory plug? Or would mounting have made that too difficult since you have the special T7 mount on your personal bike? -Sean
@NomadSweden
@NomadSweden 4 ай бұрын
@@seansterr7236 yes I loaned the dmd phone to test on the tanzania trip because it was easy to install and could run on usb. The big tablet would have been a lot more to install and a soecific mount fir handlebar would be needed. The phone was perfect for rented bikes
@NomadSweden
@NomadSweden 4 ай бұрын
@@seansterr7236 Choosing between CI and the DMD-devices you need only to look at the hardware. They are both android tablets and both can run DMD, Locus and any navigation app you want. When you have the tablet you can then choose which software you prefer. The DMD2 app works well offline but I am not sure about house numbers offline. You have lot's of POI's available in offline. I find the DMD T-865 more "refined", light and the new version is even brighter than the CI.

Heya Robert, I am about to plan getting a Yamaha Extreme...for traveling. Now my idea is to add a Garmin thread overland 8" on Portrait Format just next to the new TFT... I was of course as well checking your DMD videos. the Garmin is also capable to install the DMD software and also to switch between garmin or DMD by a button click. Will there be enough space to mount the 8" garmin (Handlebar movements...) and do you like the idea of switching between the two or shall i just go for the DMD" and the x version of the thork tablet... ?

I have never tried the mounting you want to do so I can’t say really. Also not tried the Thread but you should ask in their active DMD user group on FB. I am sure you find lots of Thread experience there.

Hej another great clip. Thanks for sharing. Do I need a special wire for the obd link? Do you have any link? Which Mount do you have to hold the carpe iter cradle on the Tenere. Do you Mount it on the original cockpit Bar? Have a nice one.
@NomadSweden
@NomadSweden Жыл бұрын
Thanks. The OBD connects to the Android device over bluetooth. You normally need an adapter cable to connect it to the bike from 16 pin to what ever your bike has. I have mounted my Carpe Iter on a rally tower so I don't have the cockpit bar. Just know that it weighs 1kg with the holder, so you need to make sure it is mounted well.

@@NomadSweden great thanks. Will get my carpe Iter in the next days. The plan ist to have it on a CRF 450l and on the T7. I would like to switch the cradle.Is it a standard 16 pole wire OBD I need for the T7? Any special Conection for the T7 ECU? Thanks for your support!
@NomadSweden

@@MrBenfru The OBD unit is 16 pins. If you have a T7 you see if it's 4 or 6 pins. (Newer bikes have 6 pins). Then google for an adapter cable for T7 with the number of pins.

Garmin XT has the unique advantage, at least so far, the display works with motorcycle gloves, plus the brightness in the sun. For me, it would be a maximum advantage to use this display with an application like DMD2. Maybe the possibility to resoft the Garmin XT with DMD2...

Hahaha love the intro Tjommi, and that is spot on. It is really time GARMIN takes this stuff serious. I think GARMIN is the simple and easy solution, and you know exactly what you got, or maybe surprised you don’t get more. Either way, for navigation on road and down in the big city’s, I have had great help in GARMIN. But i really need to take a closer look at this option for future adventures. Can’t you just switch to google maps to get directions? Really well made video that explained a lot of the questions i had about it. The controllers look great when you learn where everything is. Hahaha, i will promise to learn you the proper Ååååhh, if you teach me how to trow up the tent 🏕️😂 😂 Cheers

I really like the entusiasm and the work you put in to this. A great ambassador for the product. I have followed the development more or less since the start, and bought the lifetime access and controllers. And how much I really like to like it I am so far quite disappointed about the map it offers. Very lacking and not much help offroad. I always go back to locus where I can use topographical maps from lantmateriet in sweden and CNIG in Spain. I use the DMD/2 as a main screen on my mounted tablet. It is a nice main screen for bikes for sure, helpful to get a overview and easy access to the other applications. But for me the type of tablet and the maps I can use are more important. So I always start and navigate through the locus map, there is just so much better setup and user friendly. I know about the restrictions of the map use and that is why DMD uses the free maps. But if it could have an option to load your own offline maps it would be a whole package. Lets see in the future. Keep up the good work and ride safe.

I loaded DMD2 into my tablet. Even though i have not been able to use it, just playing around with it, really like it. One thing that bothers me is no no auto routte, and having to use that Garmin software to make a route and then load it into tablet. Running other android app, like radar scope (if call sig) will be a lot help as trips i take, weather can change in a heartbeat (bad storm reroute, well avoid anyway) Actually what i just said is not really correct. I can startup google map offline and use it for navigation if on highway. That's my plan anyway. Mostly i got it for the BDRs and other adventure tracks/routes. Humm, so i can play the music i have stored on my tablet also via handlebar controller ?
@NomadSweden
@NomadSweden Жыл бұрын
Cool. If you use the beta version it's updated at least once a week, often more. Right now it does have auto route with different riding styles etc. You can also control music since it has it's own controller widget you can place on the home screen. It's moving fast in development and it's getting close to perfect.
