All four of Minnesota's (post-integration*) Hall of Famers (Dave Winfield, Paul Molitor, Jack Morris, Joe Mauer) were born in St. Paul within ten miles of each other, and it would take 15 minutes to drive from Winfield's high school (St. Paul Central) to Molitor and Mauer's high school (Cretin-Derham Hall) to Morris's high school (Highland Park). Must be something in the water in St. Paul. *This exercise requires me to exclude Charles Bender, a Dead Ball era pitcher who was born somewhere in the Brainerd area and grew up on the White Earth Reservation. His story is fascinating in its own right, as a Native American baseball player who grew up on the still relatively new reservation, learned baseball at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School (the same boarding school that made Jim Thorpe a national name), and became a top pitcher on Connie Mack's Philidelphia Athletics, all at a time when "kill the Indian, save the man" was all but official policy and the Sioux Wars were still very much in living memory.

1:08:30 David Wright is easily the best position player from Virginia, just so happens to be a what if story similar to others on this list. If video included pitchers however, it would be Justin Verlander and it wouldn't be very close, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone passes David Wright in the next 30 years.

So funny thing about Molitor, Im pretty sure most Minnesotan’s pick MAUER as “our best baseball player”. He was a MN highschool sports legend in 3 sports, drafted first overall by his local team, played his entire career for them, and was a first ballot HoFer. Like yes, Molitor is the best player born in MN, but Mauer is “The Best Minnesotan Baseball Player”
@EhloheimАй бұрын
I know you weren’t including pitchers for this list, but it feels like a shame to say Chase Headley is the best player from Colorado because of Roy Halladay’s existence. RIP the only man on Earth who learned the Mariano cutter

As a New Mexican we’ll probably be able to claim Alex Bregman as the best player to come out of New Mexico. And he actually grew up here. If he keeps on pace he’ll probably pass Kiner in career WAR in two more years.
@d2s260Ай бұрын
I kinda wish you did American territories too. It would’ve been cool seeing the best players from American Samoa, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands
@d2s260Ай бұрын
Well I got curious so I looked it up myself: American Samoa: The only baseball player that’s come out of American Samoa is 1st baseman Tony Solaita. He was actually a pretty productive hitter for the mid 70’s Royals and Angels teams putting up 8 fWAR over his career. Puerto Rico: The incomparable Roberto Clemente. The best player from Puerto Rico and it’s not even really close with his 94.9 fWAR nearly 25 more than the next. Exactly 3,000 hits, elite defender, and an incredible human. Nothing much else to be said. Guam: Guam has only produced 2 baseball players, both of whom debuted in the 21st century. Now 3rd baseman John Hattig wins by technicality as he only played 13 games for a floundering mid 2000’s Blue Jays team. He beats out current Mets reliever Sean Reid-Foley who, even in spite of 7 years of major league activity loses out due to his career -0.1 career fWAR compared to Hattig’s 0.3 career fWAR. U.S. Virgin Islands: Home to 19 former MLB players, the best of which being Yankees 2nd baseman Horace Clark. Best known for representing how little people understood about lead off hitters as he was the consummate lead-off hitter for those late 1960’s and early 1970’s Yankees teams, even leading the league in AB’s in 1969 and 1970 despite having a .286 obp in 1970. His career 15.6 fWAR narrowly beating out 2nd place Al McBean’s career 15 fWAR

Arky Vaughan was born in Arkansas but moved to California. He was arguably the best shortstop of the 1940s.(Heck, they nicknamed him Arky because he was from Arkansas!) But I won't complain with Brooksie. Yogi Berra not being Missouri was a surprise. Very surprised and a little disappointed to not see Lou Gehrig for New York. Could argue for Musial for Pennsylvania, but Wagner is ok. Same thing with Rogers Hornsby for Texas. Joe Jackson would've been the best player from South Carolina. Until he ruined his career. There are some Negro Leaguers I could mention. Oscar Charleston (The Willie Mays before Willie Mays) of Indiana. Pop Lloyd can also be mentioned for Florida (He was known as the Black Wagner. Wagner himself said that it was an honor to be compared to Lloyd.) Cool Papa Bell for Missouri. Buck Leonard for North Carolina (The Black Lou Gehrig).

A video like this makes me wish MLB the Show had every MLB HoFer who ever lived also players who’s numbers were retired by a team… except Cap Anson fuck that guy.
@r7calvinАй бұрын
I feel like that would be really hard to implement unless you just assume all HoFers would perform just as well in every era even though training, strategy and player base have grown exponentially over time. Otherwise, you'd have to add tons of average players from each era to contrast the HoFers against whilst still realistically nerfing them against players of later eras. But that's a tall order since the further back you go, the less data you also have, and what contemporary accounts there are also become less reliable.
