One Piece is a popular manga and anime about the Straw Hat pirates including Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji. It was created by Eiichiro Oda and adapted into a Netflix series.
Usually, live-action anime shows and movies have been universally panned, but does One Piece break the curse?
This is my first exposure to this world, and I found it to be a fun ride. To the manga readers and anime watchers: does Netflix do One Piece justice? Let me know your thoughts!

As a long term one piece fan I'm always very happy to see more people expressing interest in this wonderful series! As a whole the fanbase is very welcoming. Yes, toxic fans exist (in every fanbase), but you do you. It's an adveture. It's a mystery. It's a family. Hope you give it a chance, despite the intimidating mass of story. And yes. The manga is the better way to experience the story, though honestly? The anime is good supplementary material. Music, voice acting, the animation - it adds a lot to, especially, the important moments.

The reason why Nami didn’t fight at Arlong park is cause she doesn’t stand a chance against a fishman at this point it’s explained better in the source material that the crew each have their own strengths and weaknesses Nami can hold her own against regular people but she’s by no means a fighter she needs Luffy to fight for her because he is a superhuman fighter while Luffy needs Nami to navigate for him because she is a superhuman navigator. It’s something that makes One Piece great every character needs each other to do the things they can’t do alone

That and also “beating” Arlong isn’t the climax of her character arc, it’s asking for help. Like yes her getting retribution and beating him would feel nice, but her entire life she shoulders the burden of Coco village alone, always running alone as a kid to save everyone. Never trusting, never having friends, and never asking for help. Even at the end she still tried to protect Luffy by acting mean to get him to leave. When Luffy shows that he doesn’t care and hes here that’s when she feels like she can only ask him for help (spoilers ig for anime/manga?) I liked it better in anime/manga where one of the many things pushing Nami to the brink is the villagers already knowing and going out to fight arlong and die, or at least I like the sequence of events, as it feels more in Nami’s character to ask for help because she can no longer protect them and turns to Luffy because he’s the only one who could protect the villagers. Idk I wish in the live action the villagers found out first before the big scene but I digress, I love One piece and I love the live action and minor begrudges are acceptable to me.

yeah and beating arlong isn't supposed to be the climax of her character, in the manga at this point she is learning what it is like to have friends and that there are other people who care about, and that she is no longer on her own. this arc builds the base of namis charcter as throughout the other chapters she is seen as selfish and this arc redeems her character and who she truly is.

One thing worth mentioning is how strong Usopp actually is. Since his whole thing is being scared and all, he is downplayed but reading through syrup village, at one point he takes out 2 trained security guys in one Panel without struggeling. Usopp is weak compared to Luffy, Sanji and Zoro, and also compared to the rest of imprtant players on the grand line, but he is also way stronger than your regular human being.

The reason why the fish man can still be hurt by “regular” kicks and sword attacks is because they aren’t just regular sword attacks and kicks. Zoro, Sanji, and Luffy all have superhuman strength. Superhuman strength the way it’s portrayed in anime is likely hard to adapt into live action but there are several moments when you can see their superhuman strength in action. In the anime at the same point zoro could block a bullet with his sword.

This will help reinforce that Nami and Usopp are the only normal members of the crew and the big trio zoro sanji luffy are superhuman.

@@islandboy9381yes, I think they really missed a trick there and it messes up LA Luffy's characterisation a little. We're not really shown anything that impressive in the show to justify his confidence early on, making him come across much more deluded and naive than he does in the source material. His struggling through different fights that og Luffy would've been nonchalant about, and most egregiously him getting stomped by Arlong at Baratie (which makes his eventual defeat of Arlong less believeable), may have made him more of an underdog in the LA, but Luffy was never an underdog in East Blue - he was the strongest pirate in EB from the start. Counterintuitively, rather than making him more interesting, it made him a bit less interesting than his OG counterpart - and I'm not sure it helped make things more tense or believable either, since even non-fans know Luffy will win in the end. I think they did a good job with the Live Action (especially considering they only had 8 episodes for almost all of East Blue), but the show gave me a much greater appreciation for the og East Blue. It's the weakest 'saga' but Oda's character writing is brilliant from the start. Especially the little moments that are so essential later, like Sanji witnessing Zoro's fight against Mihawk or the villagers knowing that Nami was helping them all along or Ussop having that pathetic moment in his fight vs Chew. It's a shame the LA missed these things, especially as most would cost next to nothing to include, but I suppose they had to cram in a lot because of the limited time they had, and had to have that mid Garp b plot so they could reuse the expensive sets.

@@invalidopinion5384 ''the villagers knowing that Nami was helping'' that was the most unnecessary change in my opinion, that they made the villagers not know and thus confrontional/distant all the way including Nojiko. Oda is really good at subverting those types of cliche direction just to make the dramatic emotion more impactful and to make you care even deeper about not only the main crewmember but what side characters they're fighting for as well. I don't see how they couldn't have done that with a extra minute scene added, wouldn't have costed that much. Oh well atleast they got the help me scene and some of the crew's bonding in it right so it's good but I can't help but imagine now how much greater it could have been with this foundation lol

About Nami in the Arlong Arc... The way I always understood her (having not watched the show consistently, but watched a bunch of parts of it) is that she's basically a normal human compared to Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji, who are basically superhuman. Sanji and Zoro were both trained by powerful teachers in their combat style and Luffy has some weird thing going on in his brain that gives him basically infinite willpower, plus Devil Fruit powers. The only reason Usopp is in that battle was because he was trying to prove something. That's why he ran away and almost got killed by a single guy.
@SakuraAvalon
@SakuraAvalon 11 ай бұрын
Correct. Nami can handle regular people. Luffy can rip the mast off a ship and swing it around, Zoro can lift an iron and concrete cage with Luffy inside, while bleeding out from a massive wound and walk quite a distance. And Sanji's on par with them. Usopp is a giant coward, and usually hangs back with Nami or is paired with her. But he will try to jump in, since his dream is to be a powerful, brave warrior. He then runs and begs for his life soon after the threat is shown to be... a threat.

I think we see a more toned down version of the monster trio in the life action adaptaption and Namis combat abilities are toned up a notch. I think it makes sense to ask these questions in the context of the adaptation. Zoro easily looks stronger than Luffy but Luffy still ends up finishing all of the bosses. In the anime the two looked about even back then. But since Luffys primary strengh is his almost invulnerability, he can be underrated easily. In any case I think even in the context of the life adaptation it is clear that Arlong, a 20 milllion berry pirate who can one shot Buggy, is no match for Nami. And since Nami is with Luffy in the building and not with the rest of the strawhats outside, it makes sense that she doesn't get involved in that battle. After all she has a lot of backstory with Arlong and she did at no point in the past dare to challlenge him either. If things turn bad, she can still talk her way out of this and go back to Arlong.

the thing with Garp is that he isn't an antagonist, he tries to protect Luffy and if other seasons happen, you will see much more of that (in short terms, he's not against pirates in general, he believes in real justice, not written one). Mihawk also isn't really an antagonist, he's indifferent to the world around him at this point and plays a role similar to Shanks. Buggy and Kuro being incompetent is the point, they aren't really high-ranking and make sense as first opponents for still unexperienced Luffy
@invalidopinion5384
@invalidopinion5384 11 ай бұрын
Ultimately, it's the writers fault for not conveying this very well. Buggy and Kuro are so obviously incompetent in the manga/anime because Luffy and Zoro are so overwhelmingly competent from the start, whereas the writers tried to make the Straw Hats more into underdogs in this show - to the point where casual viewers don't seem to understand that Luffy, Zoro and Sanji are supposed to be superhumanly strong - and the villains much more menacing. In the source material, Luffy and Zoro have to be given obstacles so that they don't stomp the villains right away, but it's clear they are the strongest in East Blue (besides certain visitors). Buggy and Kuro are practically jokes to them, and the story draws attention to their weaknesses. Mihawk vs Zoro is the first time we're given any concrete evidence that the Straw Hats won't be able to smoothly achieve their goals. It's also important for Mihawks character that he arrives at Baratie on a whim, not on Garp's request. That makes him feel far more neutral. Felt like the writer's were trying to fix a plot hole that didn't exist, and in doing so got both characters wrong (why would Garp rely on a warlord?). Tbf, it's arguably Netflix's fault for not giving them at least another episode to properly adapt Baratie (tho tbf again, that would've been damn expensive). They did a decent job overall with the LA, and their passion for the source material is obvious, but the strength of the original East Blue is how Oda understands his characters inside and out, whereas the Live Action either cut out small but important moments due to necessity or oversight, or adapted things in slightly different ways that led to general audiences getting greatly different impressions than fans (who are interpreting things through the lens of the original). In an attempt to overcome the monster of the week format (and no doubt for budget reasons too) they tried to add all this interconnectivity between the villains and that mid marine b plot which takes time away from the Straw Hats too. Edit: Just wanted to add, I'm not a purist who thinks they shouldn't have changed anything, and I'm glad the show is successful. I think it's got plenty of merits, just think that minor issues with characterisation and the plot have a tendency to pile up and shape people's impressions in a way the writers probably didn't intend, given how faithful they've evidently tried to be.

Nah, Garp and Mihawk are definitely antagonists, at least up until after Marineford in Mihawk's case. They both actively stand in Luffy's way of his goals at some point during the story, and Garp ultimately listens when told he has to go after Luffy, even if he drags his feet about it. Mihawk came extremely close to cutting off both of Luffy's arms at one point, and the reason he didn't wasn't because he spared Luffy, it was because Luffy realised what was going to happen and aborted his attack. They may be affable or sympathetic antagonists, but they're still antagonists. Mihawk doesn't stop being one until after Marineford, and though we might be rooting for Garp in the current arcs, he would still technically be an antagonist to Luffy as far as we know even if he hasn't been actively going after Luffy. Antagonist isn't the same as a bad guy or villain, just means he's an obstacle to the protagonist, even if it's a reluctant one, or one out of obligation in Mihawk's case during Marineford.

Very valid criticism. I want to address your point about Vice-Admiral Garp. It's not immediately clear, but if you look for it while watching, Garp goes out of his way to NOT be in Luffy's way, the entire season. The talk with Koby about declining promotions to be able to do things his way, not calling the other nearby bases for backup or blockades, taking his time with Zef (though that did payoff eventually, still). Luffy IS his grandson, and while he's hard on him, now that he knows he can't change Luffy's mind, he's not going to be the one to bring his grandson to justice. Just wanted to say that while this isn't communicated clearly during the show, it's a relevant point illustrated throughout the other media, and likely will be illustrated in future seasons if we get them. Garp's not so heartless, just an old man who wants the best for his family. I wouldn't expect new material to really deviate from the style much. While the emotional beats, themes, and characters are the heart, and grow even stronger throughout the story when they build on each other, it's the exaggerated, animated, even silly style that's the soul. I hope you dig further into the story and enjoy the ride!

Ironically enough, Nami seems sidelined in the end because they tried not to sideline her. In the manga, it's made very clear she's not a fighter in this arc, she's the victim. She stands with the rest of the villagers and watches most of the action from afar. Here, they decided to have her walk in with the crew and sit awkwardly in the middle of the fighting grounds, but yet didn't give her any action scene either. For some reason they removed every single action scene / character growth from Usopp, even the ones that actually warrant him being in the crew. I don't even get why they recruit him in the live action considering he did NOTHING in the Syrup arc, while he was the one to save Kaya in the manga. They also kinda butchered his final fight with the fishman, he was supposed to pretend to be dead to try and avoid fighting, then be ashamed of himself, and stand up and fight to redeem himself. Made sense why he ruined his own ruse. Instead, they made him feint death and then stand back up for no reason, making the ruse pointless.

As a one piece fan from the manga. The creator doesnt add that much detail into some characters backstory because he likes to keep them a mystery . Many interactions with the crew is not always told how they interact with each other in the manga or anime . its not just characters. Even in the manga Oda keeps the devil fruits some what of a mystery and we are just now getting more intel of what devil fruits can do when awakened so if many new fans are disappointed in the lack of information on stuff in One Piece it’s because itll either come back later in the story or you’ll have to find out through SBS where Oda himself tells us some information about characters or stuff outside of the story . Zorro is one of the characters that we still dont know much about to this day because Oda doesnt add his backstory in the story

They explained all you need to know about devil fruits in one of luffys flashbacks in the live action. The bar owner tells him eating a fruit is like making a pact with the devil, you gain abilities, but mother ocean will turn her back on you, making them weakened by seawater and unable to swim. This is the way its always been explained, we had a glimpse of how they work in the manga recently, but even then its still wrapped in mystery.

1. Kuina “fell down D stairs” in the anime, its implied that the adults told Zoro this bc they didnt want to tell him how she really died., The actual cause of death is implied to be suicide. 2. Luffy gets a bounty after Garp let him go, it’s because every major pirate has to get a bounty. The bigger your bounty, the more serious people will take you as a pirate. Getting one is sort of a right of passage for pirates in the story, hence why Luffy was so excited to see his. 3. A lot of the “issues” you pointed out with the story are going to expand into bigger plot points later on down the road. These 8 episodes are filled with Easter eggs, a part of me wishes I could have watched without knowing anything about one piece, but then this video gives me perspective on how that might have went lol.

I think fans were just reading too much into Kuina's death. The point was she's gone and Zoro now has to fulfill their promise for the both of them, same with Zeff and Sanji's dream of the All Blue. One of the big themes of One Piece, aside from dreams, is the inheritance of will. Carrying someone's dreams with you on your journey is illustrated over with many characters.

i agree with a lot of your gripes, but regarding the inconsistency where garp could have captured luffy if he tried harder, he probably didnt really want to catch luffy, just scare him into not going into the Grand Line. And regarding placing a bounty on Luffy, the Marines are a much larger organization than just Garp. Nezumi was the one to report Luffy as a threatening pirate to the Marines, not Garp. At least, her death less ironic in the LA. Funilly enough, Sanji backstory in LA is more faithful to the manga compared to the anime adaptation. As for why fishman are easily wounded by strawhat crews (more specifically Sanji & Zoro) its because they are superhuman in nature. Imagine swimming a mile and being like "man, i definitely can't swim another mile, I would die if i had to", then you swam that mile. thats where their body STARTS once they are in sea water. It literally drains them of strength and turns off their abilities. WHAT the seawater does is fairly straightforward...its unclear to me why its unclear to you.

It was the showrunner's idea Steven Maeda, oda was really against the idea including having arlong appear at baratie but the showrunners convinced him somehow. I really enjoyed this review! Some of the questions you mentioned are still kind of wrapped in mystery in the manga, like we know that all Devil Fruit users become useless in water (or a hammer as they say in the series), but from what I know the reason so far has mostly been spiritual, something in the lines of "mother nature rejects you for defying her". In general, Oda has only revealed what he wants to reveal about Devil Fruits, so we've mostly known things about the different types rather than their origins. Which, I think, is enough, we don't really need to know why they're there as much as we just need to know what they are. Spoilers, recent chapters have said something about that devil fruits are humans' "inherited will of wanting to achieve something", but I honestly think this probably made it more confusing so far than the opposite.

They are 3 little kids named Ninjin, Piiman, and Tamanegi. They run around the villiage and play pirate with Usopp. When they found out that Klahadore was really a pirate, they helped protect Kaya. Part of the point of the series is the cartoonishness and the villains are imperfect intentionally. As for Garp, the reason for his bizarre behavior was explicitly stated. Garp is not the leader of the marines, just one of their prominent heroes who holds a high rank. There is very little he can do to prevent the word getting out once too many people know about the Strawhats. I would guess he tried his best to prevent a bounty being put on him but ultimately couldn't stop Luffy so his hand was forced.

the reason why nami didn't do a lot of fighting at the end was entirely because luffy didn't want her to - she'd been fighting to survive her whole life up until that point, and luffy was incredibly furious at her mistreatment. the fishmen are incredibly strong, and nami was unable to do anything against them (which is established to be the same reason why orange town is the way it is, esp. with genzo). nami and usopp are very average power level and are entirely dependent on using strategic means to fight compared to luffy zoro and sanji. those three are dubbed "the monster trio" specifically because they have superhuman abilities. i highly recommend the manga, and if i recall they made up to volume 12 free to read for everyone as a promotion for the netflix series. the anime is great for pre timeskip, but gains far more filler throughout the shows lifetime - and post timeskip becomes a little silly with it. the anime tones down a lot of the manga as well just to make it more morning-tv friendly.

As a manga reader caught up with the series, I can clarify some of your confusions and suggestions without spoilers: 1) Nami presumably didn´t fight in the Arlong Park because in the manga, she was not a fighter yet. They would have to change the entire fight way too much. 2)Yes, the One Piece manga/anime is also extremely over the top with character designs and settings, and what we saw in Season 1 is only the top of the iceberg. I am glad they did not choose to be realistic with this adaptation because it would not be the cartoonish One Piece anymore. 3) The first few villains are not that competent but it gets better with time. Some of the later villains are genuinely great. If Season 2 comes out, the main villain will be a legend. 4) The Fishman can ´t be hurt by bullets but can be hurt by kicks and punches because Luffy, Zoro and Sanji have superhuman strength. In the manga, Sanji casually kicked multiple cannonballs away in Baratie, and both Zoro and Luffy are even stronger. 5) Usopp´s screentime was shortcut in this season compared to the manga/anime, but he later becomes a much more complex and relevant character that is much more than a comic relief. He is one of my favourite OP characters. He will surely be more interesting in future seasons. Anyway, I am glad that you enjoyed the Live Action even as someone who never read/watched One Piece before. I hope Season 2 will come out soon!

I think the idea for garp was that he never intended to arrest luffy. He was putting on airs for his marines and his grandson Cuz ur right it does resolve too fast, so i think the character was written already with that decision in mind

Afew things to understand about one piece: 1. Most of your concerns will be answered in later seasons...some will take alot of time until they are answered like we are 1000 episodes in this and some questions from the beginning are still not fully answered....thats part of the allure to one piece 2. One piece is goofy and serious at the same time 3. The story is not a hollywood adaptation so most of the core tenents of how hollywood writes will not be adhered to here which to me is just perfect coz it means the story is unpredictable 4. The manga/anime's pacing helps to define the characters and their stories better...they honestly did a good job of condensing like 100 episodes into 8 episodes the main points were touched on. 5. Theres soooooooo much more coming....so so much

as a fan of the anime/manga the show is incredibly faithful in its adaptation. it does take a lot of liberties and makes changes to fit what is about 45 episodes of the anime. mostly each island is self contained in its story and villains. the live action kind of blurred them a bit by introducing arlong early to provide a different reason buggy shows back up. Garp plays a MUCH bigger role as he, Coby and Helmeppo are mostly just shown meeting and Garp deciding to train them. Luffy doesn't see Coby until after he reaches the Grand Line and only in a newspaper article about Garp. overall i'm pretty satisfied with it. a few friends have started watching it and started showing interest in the source material now after years of me pestering them about it. The show really does capture the spirit of the original and its characters. I really hope Netflix doesn't just up and decide to do a Netflix and we get a season 2 and possibly more. I'm glad the show isn't afraid to do its own thing and still be a faithful adaptation. the casting is near perfect and the crew has great chemistry. onward to the Grand Line!

Nani is sidelined in Arlington Park on purpose. She’s been fighting alone for her entire life. The whole point of the “help me” scene is that she doesn’t need to fight anymore.

I think it’s actually a good move for Nami to be less of a fighter in the final arc, though she could’ve been utilized a *little* more. Her taking the backseat is a big character moment because it shows her learning to rely on other people and accept their help, when she’s been fighting on her own for like 10 years

The adaptation stayed amazingly faithful to the source material. They've established their credentials as people who love and respect the anime, and I now trust them to start telling their version of the story. The casting was the best part. I doubt they could have done much better under any circumstances. I'm an anime fan and have watched most of One Piece (I'm a month or so behind), and I was leary after other adaptations. I was an easy convert because I wanted it to be good. However, my wife is proof of the great job they've done. She barely watches the sci-fi/fantasy genre and scorns animation. She was completely invested in this story.

So something to note as well with the idea of Nami being sidelined in Arlong park, in the netflix show Zoro and Luffy are shown waaaaaayyy weaker than in the anime. The feeling up until arlong park is basically Zoro, Luffy and Sanji are so powerful that they havent struggled once with all of their fights except when caused by external forces (Luffy takes a while to beat buggy because he literally allows himself to be bound and thrown into a locked cage before realising people might want to harm him, and even then ignores that to steal food from the table with his rubber powers). Every fight that Zoro struggled with (except Mihawk) he is at a ridiculous disadvantage by being severely injured at most of them (like Zoro gets stabbed in the guts/chest area like three times in this first part, once by buggy, once by kabaji I think and then mihawk, the rest of the time he is kicking peoples asses while barely being capable to move and having wounds that literally horrify the villains , specifically arlong, by simply being alive). Sanji is also shown to be strong but as baratie is right before arlong park sanji hasnt had as much time to shine as the rest before arlong park. Those three can fight, Nami and Usopp are weak and cowards at this point in the story which is why they even join the crew as they are scared and cautious and see the other three willing to risk their lives for their dreams which motivates further character growth as they desire to chase their own dreams.

nami was never meant to be a fighter. she is supposed to be a normal girl who typically would be scared of danger which made her and the coward ussop connect so well. the made it clear how strong the fighters are by a basic normal person perspective. but BECAUSE "strong independent woman" is a mandatory requirement for netflix it made it confusing as she can fight and is fearless one time and then a damsel in distress as the manga wrote the next. its ok for a girl to act like a girl netflix jezz

I'm anime fan and i love the live action i didn't watch one piece anime, but i love the show. Luffy reminds me of naruto my favourite anime and the villains are interesting, thevobly difference in naruto the villains are not original actually bad people. I'm looking forward to more live action by netflix, they now doing it right and learned from mistakes. but i guess the biggest factor is they are guided by the author and the cast is dedicated and the crew are fans too

The one thing thats hard to convey is that Luffy, Zoro, Sanji are freakishly strong. In Arlong Park manga, Luffy punches down the wall instead of using entrance without stretching for extra force. Some characters are just hinted to do this with sheer strength. Like Garp chucking the cannonball. Or mihawk cutting the ship. Fishmen on average are stronger than the average person, but the Straw Hats are not average. Their whole fight in the manga was a lot more drawn out and tougher though. Zoro fought a fishman octopus who wielded 8 blades. Usopp took a lot more cunning to bring down his foe than just one shot. Sanji had to save Luffy from drowning while a fishman nearly killed him in the water. Luffy had a brutal fight also, being drowned, bitten into, him breaking arlongs nose. All the strawhats were pretty bloody and bruised amd battered by the time of their wins.

Im a pretty big one piece fan, at least of the anime. I appreciate your review; it was very clear... some of the issues you brought up made me chuckle a bit because it's crazy how well live action is performing on the charts. By that I mean, all of the characters will grow on you eventually, assuming future seasons are about as good as season 1. (i love the whole crew, knowing what i know now) Just to answer some questions without spoiling past season 1, the world in general is full of extremely strange, bizarre and without fail over the top and goofy things. But there are NORMAL people, like Usopp and Nami. These things sometimes have an extremely dark undertone like you saw with Buggy in the circus intro. They get darker and goofier. But even though Garp is the vice admiral, a Captain went behind his back and reported Luffy to the authorities. Creating posters of normal every day pirates is closer to grunt work so Garp doesn't have much say in that. It's different slightly in the anime but Garp was more present in this early part of the show to test Luffy's resolve, which is why he never tried. Trust me, he never tried XD Anyway, tldr, great review! I think you'll love the show :)

Luffy stops explicitly stating his goals quite so frequently once they're out of the east blue. In canon it's because nobody knows who he is, so he's constantly introducing himself, and so as he develops a reputation it becomes less necessary, because people have heard of him. Out of canon, it's an artifact of the serialised manga format of the source material. The manga is released weekly in a magazine, and early on it would have been important to keep any readers who didn't get the last issue up to date. The first handful of weeks are really make or break for a jump manga. **Below are show spoilers, and slight manga spoilers, but only for parts of the manga already adapted in the show** The storyline keeps very close to the broad strokes of the manga. The biggest exception is the Coby, Garp & Helmetto plotline. While the three of them do basically meet up and have a very similar dynamic int he Manga, Garp doesn't appear until much later, and has no confrontation with Luffy until much MUCH later in the story. By and large Coby & Helmetto's growth is a lot more fleshed out in the netflix series, which I really loved to see. Buggy similarly is relevant for longer in the netflix series. After his defeat he has a funny, well loved side story where he remains tiny for quite a long time, but he does not interact with the Straw Hats again in east blue. Kaya gets fleshed out better than I remember also. A few characters are cut. Kuro's first mate, three children Usopp is friends with, two bounty hunters Zoro knows, and the Lion that Buggy mentions as missing are the main ones to my memory. Don Krieg (the guy with the shoulder cannon who gets wrecked by Mihawk) was originally the main antagonist for the Baratie arc, and Luffy wins his fight against him. The netflix series of course replaces him with Arlong, which I thought worked quite well to tie Arlong to the rest of the story, and even the most ardent downers don't seem to be particularly upset at Don Krieg's exclusion. The specifics of how each of the arcs go down are all pretty different. Generally there's a trend to moving things that happen outdoors to indoors (particularly with Buggy and Kuro's arcs), and more duels rather than big group battles. Kuro probably suffers the most from this, but expanding his story to a third episode would have (in my opinion) likely have been considerably worse than what we got. But honestly, it's pretty incredible that the pacing felt so good considering how much source material was sped through.

The reason that the fishmen are affected by Zoro's and Sanji's attacks are because they're literally superhuman. Also Garp was only trying to test Luffy. He wasn't 100% serious about capturing. Either way this part was not in the anime or manga at least in the east blue saga so that's why it might seem out if place

I thought it was rather clear that Garp going after Luffy was more a personal thing rather than a purely Marine thing. He was trying hard to not bring other divisions into his chase bc when they did (Nezumi), Luffy got a bounty on his head. That kind of hints at how the Marines are not a fully unified force and Garp knows it.
@Joergvf

Nami didn't fight against Arlong for the same reason Zoro and Sanji attacks worked against fishmen, because she's at regular human level, while Luffy, Zoro and Sanji are at superhuman level. As you could see Usopp could barely fight too, despite being a great shooter and his participation as more of a comic relief. As the story advances, they will have less and less part in fights, as the levels start being too high and only the characters with superhuman attributes will be able to keep up. Nami and Usopp get a small power up during the timeskip in the middle of the story, but just enough so they can survive the second part of the Grand Line. As you can see, Mihawk sliced a ship in half and that for him is something he does with no effort. So you can imagine the power up Zoro will have in the future to achieve his dream. There are marine admirals that changed the weather of an island into half deep winter, half lava hell, just because they used the island as battleground with their devil fruits. I also wished Nami and Usopp got more power ups, but other captivating superhuman characters are going to join the crew in the future.
