Non Destructive Entry for Firefighters, Police Officers & EMS by Deviant Ollam

At Fort Washington we are always looking for new training opportunities that can help keep our firefighters prepared for anything they may face. Sometimes we look outside the fire service for things that we can apply to our trade. This class came about after a conversation about passive entry with John Buttrick from Coastal Fire Training. He told me about a guy on KZbin Deviant Ollam. Deviant is known as a lock picker but his full time job is spent as a Physical Penetration Tester. This job involves breaking into buildings (contracted by the property owner) to test the security and report back with ways to improve it. When we saw the methods / tools he used we instantly knew he could be a huge benefit to the fire service. After contacting Dev he was very receptive to creating a presentation for first responders. After some discussion we scheduled a class for February 24, 2020 at the Upper Dublin High School in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania.
This presentation was titled "Exigent Entry" and we had over 100 people in attendance. A lot of eyes were opened during the presentation and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. Since there was interest in the classroom presentation Dev created a special two day class just for first responders at a deeply discounted price. The link to their training website is below.

I haven't done much of this kind of stuff, but there was one time when I was cleaning someone's yard, and she had not left the gate open for me to get in, or it had closed on its own or something, so I took the 6ft USB cable in my pocket out, looped it over the fence, caught the latch, and pulled it open. It ain't much, but I was proud of it at the time.

Grat video! Years ago we responded to a victim stuck in an elevator that almost turned to be very pricey destructive but with my past of being an electrician we located the control equipment and where able to reboot the system and it auto delivered to the bottom floor and opened up. After that call i got to train my crew on elevators even though i didnt have much rank other then firefighter with a couple years on that dept.

I was working the daytime weekend shift at a bank data center, the only person in the building, on a Sunday. I had made a pot of coffee in the employee lounge, outside of the machine room and went out to get a cup of coffee when there was a power outage. (No, we didn't have a UPS.) Couldn't get back into the machine room, so I called the security guard to have him let me in. The machine room security doors had a door-within-a-door with a deadbolt that locked them to the outer frame. The idea being that if the door electronics (card read, door opener, POWER, etc.) failed, the inner door could be opened with a simple key. That simple key was not on the guard's key ring. "OK, I guess I'll just wait here until the power comes back on." The guard left. As I was standing around, I noticed that the raised machine room floor extended a couple of feet outside of the door. Also noticed that the floor tiles weren't held down by fasteners, and there was a pretty big gap between the top of the floor tiles and the bottom of the door. Couldn't pull one up with my hands, so I got a large paper clip and wiggled it underneath the tile far enough to grab the edge of the tile and pull it out. the floor was elevated about 10 inches, more than enough to crawl under the door, push up a tile on the inside, climb up into the machine room and finish my shift. Power came back on later, so the evening guy got in OK. When I told my supervisor about it, he told me not to do it again, because the door is covered by a security camera. So I broke into the machine room of a bank that was doing $10 million a day with a paper clip. I don't think they ever did anything about the missing key, the unsecured tiles, and the wide open space under floor that could be entered just by pulling up a floor tile. The bank merged with another one about 5 year later, and they closed the data center. It's a hotel convention center now.

As a paramedic working in an area where we don't always have the fire department to fall back on for entry, I appreciate the info. Probably gonna put together a small kit for those rare circumstance where memaw is having a COPD exacerbation and can't get up to unlock the door for us. Thanks king 👑👑👑.

I've worked in more than one EMS department where CH751 was the narcotic box lock key.

Ironically enough that is also the key used for accessory compartments in RVs (where people keep lawn chairs, grills, etc).

Similar experience here. Not only was CH751 the key for the narcotics box, it was also the key to the glove compartment that we definitely weren't supposed to have access to. There was nothing in there but the owners manual, but it was interesting to see that the rig came with an owner's manual!

An interesting story about REX sensors. I was working at a secured facility (I will not mention where). The way the entrance worked was there was a vestibule you could badge into, and then you would put your phone in the cubbies there. You then badged into the actual secured area. A message was sent out for employees to please not hang out in this vestibule and check their phones. While an explanation was not given I assumed it was because the REX sensor was being tripped, leaving the door unsecured.

At 27:17 you mention that turning the handle disengages most handle security. I stayed at a hotel up in Canada a couple of times about 5 years ago, forget the city, but the cleaning staff could still open the door even if I turned the deadbolt, I got woken up by then a time or two. I ended up placing their tv remote under the deadbolt turn handle and wedging it on the door handle and they could no longer just walk in. They never were happy about it but I was less happy about having someone walk in on me sleeping in the buck.

Re: the multiple keyboxes for multiple people who might need to get in: I've seen the rural equivalent -- each person who needed access brought their own padlock, and hooked it between the owner's lock and the next one between the ends of the chain that wrapped around the pole and held the gate closed, so the owner only has to go out and unlock his lock once to give a repeating visitor access by adding theirs to the chain. Not the MOST secure system (anybody could add THEIR friends, and it's not at all difficult to pop most padlocks you can do that with, but hey, locks just keep honest people honest. (the owner, the two oil companies that had pumps on wells on his land, the owner's friends and family who used it as a private shooting range/fishing hole, the occasional hunter who paid him to hunt deer or trap feral hogs on it ... )

The Knox boxes were interesting. My dad is a journeyman electrician for a local company. Frequently he tests fire alarm systems they’ve installed. It requires access on his schedule. He always jokes that he’s got a key to every school, hospital, prison, courthouse, and every other public building within three counties. It’s an actual gigantic ring of keys in his work truck he takes home. Perhaps I’ve said too much 🤭

my brother used to live in an app block where the front door of the block was so poorly fitted you could slip the latch with a twig from the big bush that was next to the door and he'd have to do this fairly regularly as the key tag reader didn't work a lot of the time

No... as one of the very first security red hats, a man named Frances Hobbs (1851), explained "most thieves are already aware of anything I can discover. Thieves will always be looking for better ways to be a thief." Yes, especially in the US where fire codes are complicated, these are serious risks. It is why any business with more than a couple grand worth of stuff has either security or an alarm. Locked doors are first doors, then locked. It is easy to unlock them. While here he was teaching people we want to know how to get in, how to get in faster, for the rest of us, he is showing how not to be such an easy target.

I've worked maintenance at a local hotel. We had and under door tool and a night latch tool. That came more into play when a family had adjoining rooms and they ALL left through one. Leaving the other room and adjoining doors locked.

My freaking cat set off our glass break alarm at 1:08:50 and it took me a good couple seconds to realize that the alarm was coming from the house because of the epic timing. I was shocked that one of the pen testers set off an alarm. Then the alarm kept going after the clip and I was like. "Wait a minute...."

That was the code many years ago when I was a teenager making minimum wage at national retail chain with thousands of stores. I suspected that that was the default code for the lock then, and good to see it confirmed, but I doubt anyone has changed the locks or codes since.

Something else some of my classmates did to annoy the lower school students (years 7 -11 uk) was on the fire refuge side of the doorway hidden behind where the door was open was a fused switch. Guess what that switch was connected to the maglocks on the door and once you release the door stop you could switch it on or off and for us we only cared about it on (6th form had working ID cards due to being able to enter and exit the building freely) but it worked to turn them off

Interesting fact….The A126 is still highly used. But not the 4 pin version your showing here 1:14:39 The modern A126 is a 5 pin key. The 5 pin version is backward compatible with the 4 pin locks. Linear does still make and sell the standalone and weigand keypads with standard the A126 4 pin locks. Liftmaster still uses the 5 pin A126 on several products. Other brands in the automated gate industry do still use the 5 pin A126. So strangely around gates and pools the A126 is still sold and in use to this day.

Just bought a HF o-ring removal tool kit ;) all tools sit in a southord case next to my current pic set in a sparrows case in my back pocket. People look at me strangely when they find out I have pics and other tools on my person daily. I explain that I forget they are there til I need em. At my current job ive used my picks twice. Both times to open...and close the employee bathroom tp holder. Lol I did have a manager accidentally re combo a temp padlock for $$ earlier this week. It took me too long to decode the combo so he bought another. I took the lock home. Put a good carabiner on the shackle to get more tension and decoded the combo in 5 mins or so. He wanted to get it back to return it. I had reset it to factory combo. 0000. I bought it from him to practice more ;)

The best room listening device is an electret microphone attached to a mcdonalds plastic straw and insert the other end of the straw under the door. The straw acts as a sound multiplier. very effiicient.

1:39:00 Sometimes nurseries/ old people hospices will do this, simply because the need for pushing in a code is so beyond those poor souls with severe dementia, that you need not worry about them realising the sticker is the code for the door. Those not suffering from dementia, on the other hand, will not be a danger to themselves if they leave the hospice, so the need for a code is simply to keep people with dementia from exiting, whilst the sticker will let everybody else enter and leave freely.

Do all doors in USA just have a huge unprotected seam around the lock? In europe all the doors have part of the door on one side and a part of door jamb on the other side covering the seam, so it is much harder to actually touch the latch with a tool from either side.

For that cool screw-type door wedge, could you bypass it using a latch tool under the door to sort of twist it out of the way? Not to unscrew it, but just sort of pivot it out of line with the door?

It's a door stop wedge. If you wedge it under the door well and torque up on the screw to provide pressure between the floor and the bottom of the door, it should be VERY hard to get that thing to twist out of the way.

On coded wheels, some can just be visually decoded. You can see the cog from the gap between the wheels, just line em up and spin the wheels up or down in unison until it opens

I got good at opening those as a teenager because i realized if you put pressure on the bar and rotate through the number, the target number will have far less resistance to spin to than the others to the point that if you are feeling around you will frequently spin halfway to the next number or skip it entirely

So when I rekeyed all my locks, I made the old key get stuck in the inside lock which effectively turned it into a thumb lock. I did this by replacing one spring in the lock with all pins.
